A Smoking gun fires no blanks

Advantages: Style, acerbic wit, acting, story.....

...Thank You For Smoking is an acerbic, witty and sometimes shocking look the way American politics works. It will have you laughing uproariously, mainly at the things said by the lead character Nick Naylor, (Aaron Eckhart, Paycheck) in the defence of smoking. See he is a lobbyist for the tobacco concerns and it is his job to defend cigarettes and to make sure people carry on smoking by telling them of all the good points! Right from the very start Thank You shows a stylish touch, the opening credits being based around cigarette packs and logos with the cast and crew names in place of the brand names. I like to see some originality in credits and this certainly stood out enough to make me sit up and actually watch these credits properly. Thank You is based on the novel by Chris Buckland and manages to be both scary and funny...

...Smoking as we all know is extremely harmful to you and others in the close vicinity. This provided the basis for most countries to introduce a smoking ban in enclosed spaces. The argument is that by banning smoking, you are saving lives. Those working in pubs, restaurants and so on will no longer be made to inhale second hand smoke and potentially contract smoking related diseases. We have all heard stories about people who have never smoked developing lung cancer, with the cause being passive smoking. This truly is a sad story, as these people have contracted life-threatening illnesses without ever experiencing cigarette smoke first hand. I had been smoking since I was 12 years old and I only tried it as my friends were smoking and I wanted to be in with the ‘in’ crowd. I have tried in the past to kick the habit cold turkey and unfortunately I never had enough will power so I always failed every time. So after some research on the Niquitin CQ patches I thought I’d give them a go. Off I went to the doctors and got these patches on prescription – saving myself a few pounds, as they are not cheap buying them off a shelf! I think they are around the twenty pound mark – all depends where you buy them from as the price does vary. So the next morning the patch was on, it made my arm itch a bit but other than that I felt fine, I never had a craving at all...

Advantages: Health benefits and more cash (l know the advantages of not!)
Disadvantages: Smell, cancer, cost, anti-social etc etc (yes l know these too!)

The reason is that I'm finding it hard because if smoking was banned in all public places, then there would be no freedom of choice for those who smoke. However, being in a public places where people are smoking, it is not good for people who are non-smokers. That's another violation of freedom of choice. Why should non-smokers breathe in other people's poisonous cigarettes?
