Though there is no doubt in the viewers mind that this is who the main characters are based on obviously the makers deny this and say that it is all fiction, though an appearance later on in the film of a band that is so like The Jacksons it cant be a coincidence makes it hard to believe their assertions. Originally a massive stage hit Dreamgirls makes a seamless move to the big screen. It manages to circumvent the differences between the two and works almost as well as a movie as it must have done as a stage play. Advantages: Good all-rounder lens for APS and full frame bodies

...'t get really deep background blur (bokeh) but the circular iris means that at least it is smooth and pleasing. If you want eye-popping bokeh, use a f1.4 50mm lens... Focussing is very fast and accurate and the 3 stop image stabiliser works well. This lens eats the battery more than my non-IS lens but not as much as the 4 stop IS on the EF 70-200 f4L IS. If you're short of battery you can always turn the IS off. One thing I have noticed is that compared to my EF 17-40 f4 L lens, this one does suffer more from barrel distortion at the 24mm setting than the super-wide lens does. So while it would appear to overlap the range of the super-wide optic, in practice the dedicated super-wide does a better job at the same focal length. Whether I can be bothered to change the lens in the field usually depends on the weather in the particular field... Read review

In terms of raw talent, presence and acting ability, Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson blows her out of the water. As Effie, she's natural, confident and completely at home. She hasn't picked up any of the tricks bigger names have discovered to get them through films. She has great charisma and a big emotional range that's almost a match for her vocal one. Her singing is where her star quality really shines through - she has a huge voice, great range and is able to act through the songs. Anika Noni Rose is the odd one out of the three female leads because she doesn't have enough to do as tagalong Lorrell, so has little chance to show she can act. Curtis soon becomes Jimmy's manager and makes the Dreamettes an act of their own, no longer back up singers to Jimmy. He also renames them 'The Dreams' and wants them to have a more pop sound but this is where trouble starts as Curtis wants to make Deena the lead singer now not Effie and she gets jealous and offended. Effie feels pushed out of the spotlight and although the group do well and do their first few shows as a group soon the problems begin from here onwards. The soundtrack to this film was really good; Jennifer Hudson was an amazing singer and surprised me with her powerful voice.
