Holidaying in North Wales

Advantages: Beautiful location, fantastic cottages with all amenities
Disadvantages: Just that you need some form of transport

...My mum and her partner have spent a couple of holidays now at a location near Bala in North Wales - the location in question, Pen Cefn, boasts four properties for rent, each of differing proportions. This year, mum decided to treat me (because I reached the big 40) and my sister and her family to a week long holiday in one of the properties. Having had a superb time, I thought it was time to pass the news on to others. Address and location "Pen Cefn" Sarnau Bala Gwynedd LL23 7LG Tel: 01678 530481 or 530413 E-mail: bevianna@btinternet.com Website: www.pencefn.com Proprietors' names: Ian and Bev Moss, Anna Hayward The nearest town, about five miles away, is Bala (which is just inside the Snowdonia National Park), which is on the A494 road. Pen Cefn, which is a smallhold, plus the cottages, is just above a small hamlet...

Graeanfryn Farm in North Wales - camping and caravanning site

Advantages: Not too far from Portmadog, sandy beaches around 1 mile away, prices quite reasonable
Disadvantages: Toilets/showers could have been a lot cleaner, terrible Welsh weather, not much space on site

...with lots of really nice beaches nearby. Although we had been to the town before, we had never actually visited this particular caravan and camping site. The site is at: Morfa Nefyn Gwynedd North Wales LL53 6YQ The surrounding area is mountainous, very quiet and perfect if you like walking or want to get away from it all. Although the beaches are said on the leaflet to be 1 mile away from the site and we are all good walkers, we found that we would have to drive to get to any good sandy beaches, especially carrying all our belongings that we would want to take to the beach. We also couldn't walk to a shop as there were none nearby, we had to drive to another town by just following the road and finding the nearest shop to buy anything. It took about ten-fifteen minutes to get to this nearest town in the Landrover. While we were there we...

The Standing Stones of North West Wales

Advantages: Well-written, well-researched
Disadvantages: None

...The Standing Stones of north western Wales by Michael Senior is, at 96 pages, a relatively slim volume. But what it lacks in size it makes up for by the breadth and depth of the knowledge that Michael Senior manages to fill this book with. Unlike far too many people in this field, Senior does not make unwarranted assumptions or presumptions. He gently chides (with good humour, it has to be added) some of the other researchers and writers. He cites, as an example, a notice erected by the ancient stone avenue at Avebury, in distant Wiltshire: "'This monument', states a notice at the stone avenue of Avebury, 'was erected in about 3,000 BC, for a unknown religious purpose.'" But Senior remains unconvinced by such guesswork. He goes on to say: "If un know, one immediately wants to ask, why assume it was religious?" Senior argues...

'The capital of North Wales' .... or so they say

Advantages: Scenery outside of town center, markets, nightlife (debatable)
Disadvantages: Public transport, nothing to do in the day, weather

...Wrexham is a market town in the North East of Wales, often being given the title of being the 'capital of North Wales'. Although this does sound impressive, Wrexham can in no way compare to Cardiff or any other major towns or cities in Wales. Although it has many disadvantages, the town of Wrexham is everything you would expect from a small market town. It is populated mainly by old people (so you can imagine how lively it is) and does have a reputation of being quite rough in areas. Although you will find some of the friendliest people living there, Wrexham also has a large amount of unfriendly and rude people. However, this is mostly seen at night around the clubs, where prejudice and homophobia are extremely common (but this always seems to be ignored), at daytime it can be alright. So, just a warning to anyone a bit different...

Presthaven is a sanctuary in the sands

Advantages: Many things to entertain all in one place
Disadvantages: A little pricey at times

...I have visited Haven holidays with my family for the several years now, my favourite destination being Presthaven Sands Near Prestatyn. This site opens in March and closes in November each year. In Presthaven, as in most sites, they have a vast selection of entertainment, especially for the children, with different activities at each site. It offers static caravans of various sizes and styles and also there is a place for touring caravans, situated near the Anchor pub, as you enter the site past the security gate. ** WHERE IS IT..? Presthaven sands is easily found along the A548 in Gronant, (post code LL19 9TT), just outside the small seaside town of Prestatyn. The actual site is situated a stones throw from the Denbighshire North Wales coast line, with it?s six miles of fantastic golden sands. ** THE CARAVANS...

Up on a mountain, down by the sea

Advantages: Fascinating history, incredible location
Disadvantages: Small, not in great repair

...There are an amazing amount of castles in Wales, many of them very close to each other. After visiting Harlech Castle, we went to take a look at nearby Criccieth Castle - the two castles are just fifty years apart in age - making them over 700 years old. Like Harlech, Criccieth Castle is a ruin - not really surprising considering its age, and it sits on top of a hill looking down over the sea and local town. Location Criccieth is situated in North Wales, between Porthmadog and Pwllheli on the A497. The town itself is small, although there is plenty in the way of gift shops and cafes, and like Harlech, the castle is immediately obvious on the approach to the town because it is situated at the top of a hill. There is no car park for the castle itself, but it is possible to park for free on the pretty little street that runs alongside...

Porthmadog, Wales

Advantages: Good day out, Clean beaches
Disadvantages: Not a lot to do at night

...Porthmadog, Wales I first went there a few years ago after being recommended to go as the beach close by called Black Rock Sands would be brilliant to take the dogs on. It's brilliant as Black Rock beach is a drive on beach and dogs are welcome all year round on certain parts of the beach. It is kept clean and it's patrolled by lifeguards to looks after everyone and make sure they are safe. The waters clean for a UK beach and warm in the summer. There is a small charge for getting on the beach at holiday seasons but it isn't very much and well worth it for a day on the beach. It's also good late in the evening when everyone else has gone home to just have a drive across the beach. In the town itself there is a variety of shops, cafés and various other things to look at including the steam railway that goes across some...

The North Pier, Blackpool

Advantages: Lots of fresh air, fully accessible by disabled visitors
Disadvantages: A small admission charge

...If you think about the main English seaside resorts then the chances are that they will have a pier. There is something very quintessentially English about seaside piers and in Britain they are largely restricted to England, with a handful in Wales and none at all north of the border in Scotland. Blackpool in the north west of England is unusual because it boasts three different piers. The North Pier, Central Pier and South Pier. As its name suggests The North Pier has the most northerly location of the three. It is also the oldest pier in the town and at 503 metres long it is also its longest pier. Eugenius Birch was drafted in to design The North Pier. He had been responsible for the design of Britain's first seaside pier at Margate. This was his second pier project and following its success he would go on to design a further...

Welcome to Wales

Advantages: plenty to do in Summer
Disadvantages: less to do in Spring or Autumn

...NAME OF LOCATION: Llandudno, North Wales BACKGROUND Gee Vee Travel were doing a March trip to Llandudno and my mother decided to book this particular holiday for her, my father, and myself. Although I have visited Llandudno many times, they have usually been day trips from home (Chesterfield) or from other North Wales destinations that we have stayed at, so staying in Llandudno would be a great change. I read several Ciao reviews on the topic so that I knew what was available in March - not a lot, most things open from Easter to October, and Easter was 3 weeks after my trip! Typical. However, do not be despondent as we found plenty to do in and around Llandudno. Our Driver took us out on 2-day trips but we had plenty of time to explore Llandudno itself on the first evening and all day Thursday. We also had time after our...
