Jack Barkers Golf Complex, Northampton, UK
Advantages: Pleasant complex and a nice way to spend the day.
Disadvantages: Not as well maintained as some courses in the area
...Welcome to my review of the Jack Barker Golf course, Delapre, Northampton. The Oaks Course.
The course is a 5947 yard par 69 course set over 18 holes on the outskirts of Northampton. The setting of the course is very pleasant as it is within the grounds of Delapre Abbey, or more properly, the Abbey of St Mary de Pratis which was one of only two Cluniac nunneries built in England
Hole 1. The first tee is set some 317 yards from the front of the green. There are two small bunkers set either side of your approach but a good straight drive will see you very close to the green in the winter and running off the back in the summer. The green is not very large and, like most of these ex municipal courses, lacking in grass. The first hole should be an easy par for all but the real novice golfer.
Hole 2. The second hole is a 414 yard par 4...

Literary Travels from Northampton
Advantages: Near London, Good Communications, Unspoilt countryside
Disadvantages: Lack of vibrant night life
...Many have enthused over Northampton's and the county's endowment of stone buildings, it's lovely Saxon churches and it's nice stone villages. Not too for nothing was it known as the County of Squires for many aristocratic families had family houses in the county, which also gained fame since the ancestral home of the late Princess Diana was in Northamptonshire. What, surprisingly, has been less well commented on, are the county's literary figures. Using Northampton as a base, this helps make it an interesting place for literary travelers to visit and this county lies only 60 miles north of London.
Northampton has produced a number of literary figures. America's first poet in English was a Northampton lass Anne Bradstreet. One, of the best known antiquaries of the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth centuries was Vicar of Easton...

Northampton:More than Cobblers!
Advantages: Good entertainment venues. Good shopping.
Disadvantages: Parochial
...I lived in Northampton for two years and found the town to be an interesting one. It was, of course, famous as one of the major centres of Britain's boot and shoe industry and the local soccer side, Northampton Town are even known as "The Cobblers."
Historically it was an important market town and there are some attractive old buildings in the town centre. The weekly market is excellent. In recent years it has expanded considerably as it was designated as an overspill town and new large scale housing estates were developed particularly in East Northampton.
Pride of place on the entertainment scene has to be accorded the modern Derngate Centre which attracts international show business figures and the very attractive Royal Theatre. There are a number of congenial pubs in town and in suburban areas such as Kingsthorpe, several good...

Northampton: the town
Advantages: Plenty to do if you live here
Disadvantages: Not so much to do if you're just visiting
...Northampton is a large town of around 200,000 people situated in the East Midlands. Once known for its shoes (the football team is nicknamed 'The Cobblers), you are now more likely to find people here working for companies in the services sector such as Barclaycard or Nationwide. Having lived in a nearby village from October 1990 I would have to say that it is a good place to live. There are shops for everything you could need, most of which are located in the town centre but there are some other areas such as Kingsthorpe or one of the retail parks where shops can be found. There's plenty to do as well ? a large cinema with amazingly good value passes (as many films as you can see in four weeks for £15, or eight weeks for £25), several nightclubs, many pubs and bars, the Roadmender for gigs (recently we've had bands like Elastica...

Northampton School for Boys - Great Shows
Advantages: Great shows, experience
Disadvantages: mmm? Audience not that big
...Northampton School for Boys, (known more freely as N.S.B) has had recently (about a year ago) a fully working theatre/concert hall put in to the new Cripps Hall "Expressive Arts/English Department". Not only does this provide excellent working space and experience for the students, but also it allows top quality plays by students and travelling theatre groups. These are founf quite regularly, and promise to be great fun. As well as the theatre, the Drama Studio has a great deal of working space and its own stage to put on smaller, but no less decent productions. A Planned Studio Production is A Midsummer Nights Dream in later February . The two main theatre productions are "Smike" in December (15th + 16th), and "West Side Story" in March. I recommend you go see these if you can!!!
Not only are there great shows by students but stars...

A shame about the players. An away fans view
Advantages: Good ground, plenty of parking
Disadvantages: Bad players and traffic
...Once again I return to write about one of the many lower league football grounds as an away supporter, to give my fellow visitors an insight into their trip to Sixfields.
Northampton Town are doing almost as bad as my team this season. Languishing in the relegation zone, there looks like very hope of sustaining their division 2 status this year.
A lack of tactics, quality players and the need for cash has forced them to battle for their very livelihoods.
Their poor playing level is papered over by a nice modern ground with good facilities.
Getting there.
--------------
(By car)
From South.
Up the M1 to junction 15a and follow signs for A45 Northampton. Follow A45 for 1 mile and signs will appear for Sixfields. Follow signs to the ground.
From North.
Exactly the same but south down the M1.
From the East...

Northampton, Mass.
Advantages: pretty town, good mall, known for its good food
Disadvantages: couldn't find any
...We visited Northampton, Massachusetts in September 2007 as part of our round the world trip. We chose Northampton mainly because a friend of ours lived there and we hoped to meet up with him and also because as part of our trip we wanted to see the real America. Having visited big cities galore, we wanted something calmer, smaller and more 'real'. Northampton was the town of choice.
Northampton is situated in Hampshire County, Western Massachusetts, with a population of approximately 29,000. It is one of the towns in the Five College Area and houses the well-known Smith College (women's college of liberal arts).
Northampton has a homely and relaxed feel. The locals were friendly and made us feel at home immediately. We loved the place so much that it is on our "want to live there" list!

Under Starters Orders at the Jade Pavilion
Advantages: Beautiful setting and gorgeous food
Disadvantages: Not the most salubrious part of town
...A Short History of Racing in Northampton
It's easy when you live near Northampton to see the town as a bit of a dive and to forget that it's a place that was once rather grand. As I learned recently, Northampton once had the third largest castle in the country and if they hadn't backed Oliver Cromwell and fallen out with the royal family, who knows what the town might be by now. It probably wouldn't have the distinction of being the biggest town in the country to not be awarded city status. Anyway, enough of local politics.
Until around 100 years ago, there was a racecourse in Northampton on a patch of land that now stands as a park - referred to as 'Racecourse Park' despite there being not so much as a sniff of a gee-gee these days. Not only was this a horse-racing venue but they also used to do public hangings there until...

By George! Great Food, Great Decor
Advantages: Great food, nice staff, beautifully decorated pub
Disadvantages: Not cheap and the Sunday menu is a little restricted
...The villages that lie to the north of Northampton are some of the prettiest in England and some of the least well-known. Tucked into the triangle formed by the A14, M1 and A45 is beautiful countryside that few people even know exists. We have villages so cute that they can easily hold their little heads up against the competition of the Cotswolds and they have the added advantage of not being full of camera-wielding Japanese tourists.
When my husband and I needed to move to the area 5 years ago we had to think long and hard about where we wanted to live. We chose Brixworth, one of the larger and slightly less snooty villages, mostly because it had facilities. Many of the smaller villages have no pub, no shop, no school, maybe a church and possibly a phone booth but that's about all. By contrast Brixworth has schools, a doctors...

Bridezilla? Shopzilla more like!
Advantages: Provide menswears and womenswear all in one place
Disadvantages: Not a great selection of dresses, small changing rooms, rude staff
....
In the meantime my then fiancé and I visited a wedding fair which was being held at our actual venue and there was a stand for a store in Northampton called The Bridal Shop. They not only provided attire for the bride and her bridesmaids but also for the groom and the whole wedding party and after getting chatting to the two people at the stand who I think were the owners I ended up making and appointment to try on dresses for the same day as the other appointment but in the afternoon. At the same time my fiancé made an appointment to try on suits.
The day of the appointments came, my friends and I went to the first appointment and I had two dresses which were shortlisted as favourites but I didn?t want to make any kind of decision until we?d been to the second shop in Northampton so we drove back to home and picked up my fiancé...
