Jack Barkers Golf Complex, Northampton, UK
Advantages: Pleasant complex and a nice way to spend the day.
Disadvantages: Not as well maintained as some courses in the area
...Welcome to my review of the Jack Barker Golf course, Delapre, Northampton. The Oaks Course.
The course is a 5947 yard par 69 course set over 18 holes on the outskirts of Northampton. The setting of the course is very pleasant as it is within the grounds of Delapre Abbey, or more properly, the Abbey of St Mary de Pratis which was one of only two Cluniac nunneries built in England
Hole 1. The first tee is set some 317 yards from the front of the green. There are two small bunkers set either side of your approach but a good straight drive will see you very close to the green in the winter and running off the back in the summer. The green is not very large and, like most of these ex municipal courses, lacking in grass. The first hole should be an easy par for all but the real novice golfer.
Hole 2. The second hole is a 414 yard par 4...

Literary Travels from Northampton
Advantages: Near London, Good Communications, Unspoilt countryside
Disadvantages: Lack of vibrant night life
...Many have enthused over Northampton's and the county's endowment of stone buildings, it's lovely Saxon churches and it's nice stone villages. Not too for nothing was it known as the County of Squires for many aristocratic families had family houses in the county, which also gained fame since the ancestral home of the late Princess Diana was in Northamptonshire. What, surprisingly, has been less well commented on, are the county's literary figures. Using Northampton as a base, this helps make it an interesting place for literary travelers to visit and this county lies only 60 miles north of London.
Northampton has produced a number of literary figures. America's first poet in English was a Northampton lass Anne Bradstreet. One, of the best known antiquaries of the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth centuries was Vicar of Easton...

Northampton:More than Cobblers!
Advantages: Good entertainment venues. Good shopping.
Disadvantages: Parochial
...hotels and a wide range of eateries. Shopaholics will find Northampton to their linking with the city centre housing the usual department stores and branches of the multiples, and a major shopping complex at Weston Flavell having a host of shops. The Grosvenor Centre is another good one-stop shopping complex.
Northampton is the county town of Northamptonshire often called the "County of Spires and Squires" and is a good base for exploring attractive villages such as Brixworth and Earls Barton, the ancestral home of the late Princess Diana and the lovely old stone town of Oundle. It also has good road and rail connections and is only around 60 miles north of London....

A Poor Tribute to an Important Historic Battlefield
Advantages: Go because you really SHOULD and seriously awesome history took place in this field
Disadvantages: Don't expect to find much to see when you get there.
...Model Army of Oliver Cromwell leading to the destruction of monarchy rule and the beginning of England's brief time as a republic. The area around where I live is steeped in the history of that time and to this day the town of Northampton is believed to have a great big black mark next to it which blocks all attempts to get upgraded from town to city status. Allegedly the Queen has commented that we'll never get to be a city because Northampton 'backed the wrong side'.
In a country with so much history all around us, you'd think that being such a significant battle site would be marked with a fanfare of publicity, a big visitor centre perhaps and recognition for its historical importance. That at least was what I imagined before I decided it was time to take a detour off the A14 after many years of driving straight past the brown heritage...

A Watery Destination in a Land-locked County
Advantages: A great location for some fresh air
Disadvantages: Can get very busy in the summer
...We Brits are by history a sea-faring nation and if we're kept too far from the water some of us get a bit twitchy. Since Northamptonshire is probably statistically about as far from the sea as it's possible to get, having something large and wet in the area is very important to us. For my husband and me, that little bit of watery escape territory is Brixworth Country Park.
Brixworth Country Park was opened in 1990 and is a jointly managed project between Anglian Water - the local water supplier - and Northamptonshire County Council. The country park surrounds approximately half of the man-made lake known as Pitsford Water or Pitsford Reservoir. The part which is not within the park is managed by a local fishing club and access to that area is only available to members of the club. The division between the club zone and the country...

Northampton: the town
Advantages: Plenty to do if you live here
Disadvantages: Not so much to do if you're just visiting
...Northampton is a large town of around 200,000 people situated in the East Midlands. Once known for its shoes (the football team is nicknamed 'The Cobblers), you are now more likely to find people here working for companies in the services sector such as Barclaycard or Nationwide. Having lived in a nearby village from October 1990 I would have to say that it is a good place to live. There are shops for everything you could need, most of which are located in the town centre but there are some other areas such as Kingsthorpe or one of the retail parks where shops can be found. There's plenty to do as well ? a large cinema with amazingly good value passes (as many films as you can see in four weeks for £15, or eight weeks for £25), several nightclubs, many pubs and bars, the Roadmender for gigs (recently we've had bands like Elastica...

Woody Woodpecker was ere
Advantages: Lovely walks
Disadvantages: Gets very busy
...Salcey Forest is very local to me, not the nearest woods but it is a short fifteen minute drive across Northampton from here I live, located close to the M1 Junction 15 it is just to the east of the village of Hartwell. It is a beautiful ancient forest and it has some impressive facilities which mean it is ideal for families looking for a relatively short flat walk or for those wishing to go for a longer hike or bike ride; it even has a bridleway for those wishing to horse ride.
There are a number of access points where there is parking and there are also some lay bys on the surrounding roads where you can park if you are too tight to stump up the £2 parking fee but to be honest if you are that sort of person then really you do not deserve to experience this great wooded area. The £2 parking fee is the same whether you stay...

Ghosts in Northamptonshire
Advantages: Fascinating Culture Historical
Disadvantages: Scary
...at the Wheatsheaf.
The Wooden Walls of Old England pub in Collingtree cannot claim to be haunted but it was once patronised by Cromwell's officers - they are said to have drunk the place dry just before the Battle of Naseby but it seems they were not gentlemanly, for they refused to pay for the drinks. An old pub in Northampton, The Phantom Monk, now demolished, had a ghostly past... it was haunted from time-to-time by a cowled figure and the smell of incense was discernible.
Rothwell has associations with the morbid for in Rothwell Church in the crypt lie the remains of thousands who were killed at the Battle of Naseby; it is also thought likely that some of those killed at Bosworth Field are also buried here. The town is also famous for its fair which is always held during the week following Trinity Sunday. It is traditionally opened by...

Northampton School for Boys - Great Shows
Advantages: Great shows, experience
Disadvantages: mmm? Audience not that big
...Northampton School for Boys, (known more freely as N.S.B) has had recently (about a year ago) a fully working theatre/concert hall put in to the new Cripps Hall "Expressive Arts/English Department". Not only does this provide excellent working space and experience for the students, but also it allows top quality plays by students and travelling theatre groups. These are founf quite regularly, and promise to be great fun. As well as the theatre, the Drama Studio has a great deal of working space and its own stage to put on smaller, but no less decent productions. A Planned Studio Production is A Midsummer Nights Dream in later February . The two main theatre productions are "Smike" in December (15th + 16th), and "West Side Story" in March. I recommend you go see these if you can!!!
Not only are there great shows by students but stars...

Stranded in Northamptonshire
Advantages: Great service, lovely rooms
Disadvantages: Very remote!
...My bloke has a new job, which is going to involve lots of travelling. - which I was a little unhappy about. I got used to the idea, and planned to stay at home and get round to tidying up our little house while he went to Northampton for work one week. However, we had a massive barney the night/morning before and I was loathe to leave things as they were and decided to go with him to patch things up. This involved a lot of fibbing to my temporary employers about my whereabouts (so don't tell anybody).
I rang the hotel on the Monday night and told them about his existing booking and asked whether payment was on a per room or per person basis. Unfortunately rates were a little extra, but I decided that it was worth it. We drove the 90 miles from Sheffield to Northampton that night and came to the tiny village of Harrington where we...
