...which takes you through some great native bush land and if your only visit to New Zealand is to Auckland city, then this drive will give you a small taste of the New Zealand you will find outside the city. Piha beach on the west coast is a popular surfing and swimming spot on the west coast but beware of the notoriosly dangerous rips and big surf. *North Shore and East Coast Bays* I love this area of Auckland. The beaches are extremely scenic and the small townships have more of a village feel to them. Makes for a nice down to earth visit rather than just sticking to the downtown Auckland area. NORTHLAND. Northland really deserves a category of its own as it is full of all sorts of delights to be discovered but a quick run down of the highlights will have to do. Hire a car or get on a bus...

a little country with a big heart

Advantages: empty beaches & friendly faces

...catered for.. all you need to do is ask! Auckland is nice but if you want to bear witness to some pure and natural beauty then you need to head north and towards Northland which incorporates every town from the city of Whangarei right to the tip of the country. Here you will find bushland comprising of native trees such as the Pohutukawa and Punga, and an array of other lush green beauties.. the rumour of the sheep will become apparent also as there are simply thousands (and if you didn't know already there are 20 sheep to each NZer)! There is beach after beach after beach, and more likely than not you could be the only person standing on one at that time. The people of north are noticeably friendlier, smile as you pass, and often times offer a salutation - and are always willing to lend a hand. Before I forget there is a must-do if...

God defend New Zealand

Advantages: Feels more homely than home
Disadvantages: Really tight on speed limits

...the weather in Auckland or Northland, wait ten minutes and it will have changed. Further north, I stayed in a small town called Ruakaka with a white sandy beach. Although the seawater was not warm it was still pleasant to surf in with a relatively thin wetsuit. Further north still, I had a pleasant trip to Kaitaia (the northern-most town) where I visited a Kauri museum explaining how the Kauri wood was prepared to make furniture and other items. Less than an hour by bus from Kaitaia is 90-Mile Beach where it is possible to toboggan down sand dunes and see where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, a sight not to be missed. I would highly reccommend northern New Zealand to anyone! My trip was enjoyable and extremely cheap at around NZ$2.50 to £1. It's like a home away from home with 4 million new friends to meet....

Don't rock the boat! Only 4 hours from Auckland!

Advantages: Great scenery, lots of activities, value for money
Disadvantages: Long way from anywhere! A bit dependent on the weather!

AUCKLAND IS THE PLACE TO BE

Advantages: Great people, nice fresh clean air, not so much traffic and wide open spaces in a big NZ city!
Disadvantages: It's one hell of a long flight!
