Morpeth Northumberland

Advantages: Historic town set in lush valley
Disadvantages: No free parking

...Morpeth is 15 miles north of Newcastle Upon Tyne in the county of Northumberland. It is situated on a loop of the river Wansbeck which runs through the town. Travelling north from Newcastle ,on the A1 and then on to the A197, will take you onto a tree lined street which leads down into Morpeth town centre.. On the left hand side is the golf club with the Cottage Hospital opposite. Carrying further on you will see the St Marys Church dating from the 14th century which contains some of the most important stained glass in Northumberland and it is also the burial place of the suffragette, Emily Davidson. Underneath the church are remains dated from the 13th century and there is also a watch house which was built in 1831 to protect the cemetary against grave robbers. Morpeth, being conveniently situated on the Edinburgh coach road, made...

The History of the Mines in Northumberland

Advantages: *
Disadvantages: *

...~ History of Ashington and of the Museum ~ Ashington is a town in North-east England. It has a population of approximately 28,000, which grew from a few farms in the early 19th Century to a large Coal mining village once coal was discovered. Ashington was once known as "The largest mining village in the world" but despite this historic claim, Ashington has no remaining deep mines. Woodhorn Colliery lies in South-east Northumberland close to the town of Ashington. It was a working pit for more than 80 years, from 1894 until it closed in 1981. Woodhorn Colliery Museum, first opened in 1989, is the only coal mining museum in Northumberland. Part of the museum is housed in some of the original colliery buildings. It has been closed to visitors for over two years while developments were taking place but it reopened in October 2006. I...

Jurrasic park in Northumberland

Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review

...A few years ago I decided that our family should become members of English heritage. The main reason for this decision was to be able to visit Belsay hall and gardens in Northumberland whenever we wanted to without having to fork out vast sums of cash each time we visited! What is at Belsay? ******************** With a population of 450, Belsay village is more of a hamlet. The village was once part of the Belsay hall estate and now provides an attractive backdrop. Belsay hall itself consists of a 19th century manor house and a 14th century ruined castle all set in 30 acres of stunning, magical gardens. For over 600 hundred years Belsay was the home of the Middleton family. How to get there. ******************* Belsay feels very much as if it's in the middle of nowhere. However it is only 14 miles north west of Newcastle...

Haggerston Castle Northumberland

Advantages: Everything you need is on site.
Disadvantages: The list is a long one.

...We usually go to Lynton and Lynmouth, North Devon for our family holidays. This year I thought we would try something new. After spending weeks agonising over where to go. We finally made a decision. Haggerston Castle, Northumberland near Berwick-Upon-Tweed, staying in a Silver 3 bedroom caravan which sleeps 8 people. We managed to bag a good deal, the price was £366 inc bedlinen, and funworks passes for the whole family, a bargain I thought. Normally the price would have been double this amount. The week booked was for August the 11th 2007 to August 18th 2007. We chose this site because it promised lots of on site entertainment, amusement arcades, clubs, bands, restaurants, convenience store, Burger king, fish and chip shop, even a Chinese restaurant, and activities for all the family, plus lots more, whatever the weather. It also had...

An excellent base for exploring Northumberland

Advantages: Ideal location, great restaurant
Disadvantages: None

...I have recently returned from a short break in Northumberland and stayed at Purdy Lodge, which is a Travelodge/Premier Inn type hotel, next to a service area on the A1. ~~~~~~~~~ LOCATION ~~~~~~~~~ Purdy Lodge is located right next to the A1 at Adderstone Services, which is located at the turn off for Bamburgh on the A1. When travelling through Northumberland you cannot fail to miss the hotel. It is in a great position to use as a base to explore Northumberland, which is exactly what I did. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ BOOKING A ROOM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had passed the hotel many times, and often thought about staying there. I only live around an hour and a half's drive away further down the North East Coast, but like to visit Northumberland often for days out and short breaks, as there are some fantastic places to visit. I googled the name...

Not a flat cap in sight

Advantages: Wondeful scenery
Disadvantages: Absolutely none!

...For some the North East conjures up images of grimy industrial areas with men in flat caps and whippets. They couldn't be more wrong. Northumberland, where I am lucky to live, has stunning coastal and countryside locations with something for everyone. Northumberland has more castles than anywhere else in England so if that's what interests you then look no further. Starting off with perhaps the most well known castle Alnwick which has been used in several films most noteably it was Hogwarts school in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. It dates from the 11th century and is the second largest inhabited castle in England and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. Tours of the castle and Fusiliers Museum of Northumberland are available and entertainment for the kids such as Harry Spotters tours, Knights Quest where they...

Saunas,mice and red squirrels

Advantages: see review

...We are always looking for interesting places to take our children for a day out and Cragside in Northumberland comes near the top of our list of favourite places. Cragside is a Victorian house, garden and estate that now belongs to the National Trust. Let me tell you why I rate it so highly! Getting there. *************** Cragside is situated in Northumberland, 1 mile north of the small town of Rothbury. It is 13 miles south west of Alnwick and 15 miles North West of Morpeth.I am not going to give you detailed directions as you can get these from the AA route finder or any map! However I will say that Cragside is well signposted from all directions. Arriving via public transport is not really an option I?m afraid, so you will need a car to get there. Once inside the estate distances between the various parts of the property are great...

No castle can claim a more dramatic setting...

Advantages: Beautiful castle and scenery
Disadvantages: None

...Standing majestically up here on the North East coast is Bamburgh Castle. To anyone visiting Northumberland's beautiful coastline, Bamburgh Castle is a beautiful site, and there surely are few castles that can claim a more dramatic setting. It sits on an outcrop of rocks overlooking the long sandy beach, and is a place I have visited many times over the years, as I love the remoteness of the coast here, and I also love to visit castles and cathedrals. I can vividly recall one of my earliest visits, sitting on the huge canons here, and having my photograph taken with my Mum and Dad when I was around 5 years old. ~~~~~~~~ HISTORY ~~~~~~~~ There is evidence to believe that this fortress goes back to the Iron age, but the present castle began as a Saxon stronghold, and was later developed by the Normans and became one of the most powerful...

Review of Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland

A magnificent and remote ruin.

Advantages: Beautiful ruined castle and setting
Disadvantages: None

...I am fortunate in that living in the North East of England, Northumberland is right on my doorstep. Despite visiting the castles and heritage sites of Northumberland regularly over the years, I had never visited Dunstanburgh Castle until last week. I had seen the castle on TV, photographs and paintings, but actually visiting the castle was most impressive, not only because it is such a dramatic ruin, but also because of its very remote setting on the coast. I read that Turner painted the castle many times, often getting up at the crack of dawn to do so! The castle occupies a prominent headland inbetween Embleton and Craster. From Craster there is a gentle slope towards the castle, and from Embleton the approach is much steeper, as the northern perimeter juts into Embleton Bay forming a 150ft cliff. Dunstanburgh Castle was built by...

Warkworth Castle - a coastal treasure.

Advantages: Great day out
Disadvantages: None

...On my recent visit to Northumberland which is not far from where I live, I took the time to visit some castles and places of interest which I had not been to for a few years, and Warkworth Castle was on my list of places to re-visit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WHERE IS WARKWORTH CASTLE? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warkworth Castle sits proudly on top of a hill overlooking the River Coquet in the historic village of Warkworth on the coast of Northumberland. Visitors in the springtime will see the hill covered with hundreds of daffodils. As the River Coquet joins the sea, you will find this picturesque village and the nearby port of Amble, with its marina and braid. They are both lovely places to visit and can be combined into one day. In the 12th century Warkworth was known as 'Werceworde' - that is the home of a woman called Werce...
