The magic of Howl

...period the movie is supposed to be set in seeing Cavalrymen on Horses but steam powered Trams, Trains, Steam Cars & Sedan Chairs too. It appears the lead character of the film is Sophie who works in a millinery shop (thats hats to you philistines) and we start off meeting her leaving work, being rescued from the over amourous attention of 2 soldiers by a chap who not only seems to know Jedi Mind tricks but can also fly and is being chased by evil black ectoplasmic creatures. Sophie discusses her encounter with her sister Lettie and they also discuss Howl (he's clearly a Wizard and everyone thinks he's evil and eats womens hearts), returning to the Shop Sophie has a spell cast on her by The Witch Of The Wastes which turns her into an old women. She avoids her mother and leaves town rescuing a scarecrow which repays her with a walking cane...

Howling Stones.

Advantages: GREAT READ
Disadvantages: NOTHING !!!

...Howling Stones. I am a huge Alan dean Foster fan and here is one of his books from his Commonwealth series. You are transported to the lush tropical world of Senisran ( a bit like the Maldives but over the whole planet ) where the islands are all paradises and the seas are vivid greens and blues. The two main characters to this story are Pulickel and Fawn who have been tasked with the job of getting the natives of this world to sign a treaty with the commonwealth. The natives however are unconcerned with the treaty and seem naively unaware of the protection a treaty with the commonwealth could provide from other more malevolent and untrustworthy species who also live in and around the universes. chief among these are the Ann, an insectoid species equal and on par with the commonwealth but a very agressive species...

HOWL

Advantages: nice change in direction, better than the last album
Disadvantages: a few weak tracks

...the effects pedals and feedback in the cupboard for a while, favouring a more polished approach.To say it's a poor album is misleading, because there's good stuff on there, it's just hugely deflating when a band like BRMC release something like this that doesn't fulfil any of the promise of the first album.The album got better reviews than it probably deserved, but was a commercial flop.The band slipped out of the music press radar and it seemed like the game could be well be up. Things got worse when Nick Jago was apparantly ousted from the band.Whether or not this was true is debateable, but he returned in time to make this album in 2005.After the commercial disaster of the last album, BRMC had a rethink and made a record that you can't really compare to their back catalogue at all.'Howl' is a record under the influence of country, blues...

Disadvantages: Not fully derived from book meant it lost some necessary elements

Howl's Moving Castle

Advantages: Beautifully imagined and humane animation that respects its audience, whilst being accessible to all.
Disadvantages: Occasionally the plot is a little disjointed, but it never really retracts...

...After the originality of Spirited Away it was easy to feel immediate disappointment at Howl's Moving Castle. Immediate disappointment, I must admit, that is wholly unjustified. Sat in a Haymarket cinema, images unfolding before me, I enjoyed Howl's Moving Castle but was not as delighted as I had been by Spirited Away and years before by his earlier efforts Princess Mononoke or Porco Rosso. Then I bought the DVD and immediately wondered why I had not enjoyed it as much as I did sat slumped before the TV. Immediately I also recognised the answer -in the cinema it was showing in the English dub. Anime never really works with an English dub I find. Even though the film has such talents as Lauren Bacall, Jean Simmons, Christian Bale and Billy Cristal involved it somehow never works like it does in the original language. They're not...

Howling Bells - Howling Bells

Advantages: A lot of very good tracks. See 'Setting Sun' and 'The Bell Hit'
Disadvantages: Very few - very close to perfect.

...After seeing the Howling Bells support Placebo last year, I've been listening to a lot of Howling Bells. Ever since I bought the album 5 months ago, it's been creeping back in and out of my collection and deservedly so - it contains some very good tracks, which makes me wonder why they haven't done a lot better than they have. The album begins with 'The Bell Hit', an excellent sing along song, packed with a great chorus and a brooding verse. Their is more to come in the way of hits, such as the singles 'Broken Bones' and the album highlight, and also a single, 'Setting Sun', which has an immediate effect to make the listener attach it. Other highlights are 'Low Happening' and 'The Night Is Young'. The best thing about this album is the voice, provided by the sexy Juanita Stein. It has an inate charm that oozes sex and style...

Howl's Moving Castle

Advantages: Family-friendly, abundance of themes, top-notch graphics
Disadvantages: Based on a book, readers may be biased if comparing

...I'm a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki movies but this particular movie is without a doubt one of my favourites. Not only is it family friendly enough for my 4 and 10 year old sisters, the adults of the house can enjoy the delightful dashes of romance, the underlying humour and sarcasm and the all too relatable themes of war and corrupt power. Knowing it was an animated movie, I was surprised at how complex the range and dynamics of the characters and their relationships were as they unfolded in the movie. My family is watching it as I write this review and even after 7 viewings, it still manages to steal everyone's attention. The fact that it is set in a fantasy land of sorcerers, demons and interactive scarecrows just adds to its charm. Admittedly, I'm certain that there's a part of everyone that would enjoy SOMETHING in this film....
