Nottingham is MORE than Forest...

Advantages: Shopping, attractions, history, pubs...
Disadvantages: Crowds, disruption from the tram work.

...that he once owned and it is now a science centre. Once a year, during the first week in October Nottingham hosts the GOOSE FAIR, the largest travelling fair in Europe. It's basically a convergence of lots of smaller fairs that all come together in Nottingham for their end of year finale. Now held on THE FOREST on Mansfield Road (a 10 minute walk from the city centre heading north) it's a 3-day extravaganza of lights, noise, big rides and side shows. It's name dates back centuries from when an annual farmers fair was held in the market square. Nowadays it's one place where asking for a cock-on-a-stick won't get you slapped... ~ Parks and green spaces ~ In total, within the city boundary are 32 parks and gardens so it?s just not possible to list them all here along with their various attributes so I?ll just stick to the two most...

Nottingham Forest to get promotion

Advantages: New signings should clinch promotion
Disadvantages: what disadvantages

...I can see Nottingham forest clinch promotion this season after missing out from play-offs in an embarrassing loss against Yeovil. The team we had last season was a good enough team for the league but now we have a great team. Colin Colderwood has got some excellent signings: Matt Lockwood: He plays left back and scored 11 last season, that almost beats our top goal scorer; he also is a free kick specialists. So we have the option of Commons, McGugan or Lockwood to take free kicks. Neil Lennon (Midfielder): The man from Celtic. This was probably the best signing Colderwood got, and for free. Lennon has bags of experience and many trophies under his belt; he?s played for Celtic for 7 years so in theory he should do great in league one. He may become captain but only time can tell. Chris Cohen (midfielder): We got this lad from...

Queen of the Forests

Advantages: Gorgeous location, so much to see and do
Disadvantages: None!

...I've lived in the Forest of Dean my whole life (nearly 33 years) and completely taken it for granted! It's really only been in the last few years, since we had our son, that we have started to enjoy our home, with it's breathtaking scenery, abundance of family activities and friendly atmposphere, so I thought I would share it all with you. Brace yourselves, it's a long one! Here comes the history bit! The Forest of Dean was firstly recognised by the Saxons and covers 110 square kilometers or 27000 acres of woodland. It is one of the few remaining Royal forests left in England and has a rich history as a favourite hunting ground for many of our historical kings. The vast amount of woodland is home to many animals and birds, but Forest pride is mainly given to the beautiful fallow deer. There are about 400 here, of which...

Review of The Forest of Dean

Magical forests

Advantages: idyllic, beautiful......plenty of woodland!!!
Disadvantages: quiet for those party people!!!

...The stunning forest of dean covers a vast area......as the name suggests it's plenty of ancient woodland with villages and towns dotted inbetween. In fact it covers over 100 square kilometers, and touches upon various counties such as herefordshie, gloucestershire and the borders of wales (the wye valley) Its about 25 mins west of Bristol. Yes so close, but it's like another world entirely.......now buckle up people because this is going to be a very lenghty review.....i'm in love with the place, and by the end of this review hopefully i'll have given you all enough reason and enticement to come dip a toe in my waters!!! ****ABOUT THE FOREST OF DEAN**** The forest of dean is one of the few remaining ancient woodlands remaining in the UK. It was designate as a national forest park in 1983, and is known as "the queens of forests all...

Victoria Centre Nottingham

Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -

...Nottingham has two large shopping centres, the Broadmarsh Centre and the Victoria Centre, situated at opposite ends of the city centre .The Victoria Centre is the bigger of the two, containing 120 shops (not counting all the various stalls in the market area.) Getting there is easy - if you drive, there's parking for over 2700 cars . If you don't drive, don't worry - almost all the Nottingham City Transport buses stop either directly outside the Victoria Centre, or within a few minutes walk of it . Other bus companies from slightly further afield, such as Trent Barton , terminate at the local coach station within the centre . If you're walking, the centre is signposted from various points in the city centre, and at the end of the day when you're weighed down with shopping, there are 2 taxi ranks directly outside the main entrance...

Much More Than Just The Major Oak!

Advantages: Plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Can get quite crowded at busy times

...a year and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area, as there is plenty to see and do. The History of the Forest William the Conqueror created ninety Royal Forests of which Sherwood was the largest. In their heyday of the thirteenth Century these Forests covered about a third of the total area of England. Sherwood Forest covered an area from near Mansfield in the North southwards towards the present day boundaries of the City of Nottingham. This is an area of about 25 miles long, whilst in the other direction it stretched for upwards of 10 miles. The word Sherwood means Shire Wood and this Forest was sometimes referred to as Nottingham Forest. It was a private hunting ground for the Royal Family of the day who used the area to hunt Game as a Pastime. It was a popular area for all of England's Kings from Henry 1...

I saw some Monkey Business in the Forest!

Advantages: Fascinating to watch monkeys at close quarters
Disadvantages: Poorly designed facilities, cafe expensive, not a whole day's experience

...With two kids and a mother in law to entertain during the Summer holidays we decided to take our little monkeys out for a trip in the forest. Trentham Monkey Forest in Staffordshire is within half an hour's drive of my home town, so it's a place that we've visited on several occasions now. The concept is apparantly unique within the UK as the forest is home to over 140 Barbary Macaque monkeys who are free to roam as they please, within the grounds of a 60 acre enclosure. On arrival On previous visits, we've just walked straight through to the kiosk and purchased our tickets but on our last visit (mid-August, so at the peak of children's summer holidays) we found two lengthy queues at the entrance. Even more annoying was the discovery that we'd joined the 'cash only' queue which was indicated by a sign that was only visible...

Look, among the branches, it's Robin Hood!

Advantages: Fantastically cheap, loads of wonderful things to see and do
Disadvantages: Can be extremely packed in warm weather

...I moved to Lincoln a couple of years ago and since doing so have been promising to go and see Sherwood Forest, which is only a 45 minute drive away from me. After many weekends of planning to go and never quite getting there, I finally went about a month ago, and had a thoroughly good time. Sherwood Forest is, as you?ve no doubt guessed by now, an extremely large forest in Nottinghamshire. The name will probably sound familiar to you as it?s rumoured to be the haunt of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Sherwood Forest itself is pretty impressive, but it boasts something a bit more spectacular than most British forests ? the Major Oak. Legend would have us believe that the Major Oak is the tree described in the legend of Robin Hood which was used by Robin and his men to hide out in when the Sheriff of Nottingham and his men came...

Once upon a time in Nottingham

Advantages: A view of history through everyday objects in Nottingham
Disadvantages: No access for wheelchairs

..., expectant mother booklets, feeding baby section with ranges of bottles in ceramic, glass and plastic, dummies and pacifiers, tins of baby food, spoons, and dishes and dried milk. Also different types of bath, potties, nappies, powders and creams for bathing. Hanging from the rafters are washing lines with terry nappies and an assortment of baby clothing both modern and old with items so small they look like bunting. But one thing beneath all this clothing is a pram, one very much the style my Mum used for me, my sister and brother back in the late 60's and early 70's. Another room is filled it items such knitting patterns, wool and needles, football memorabilia from Nottingham Forest and Notts County such as programmes, 1960's records from the Beatles, examples of shoes and children's dress up clothes, books and annuals from television...

Monkey Forest is Fantastic

Advantages: Different every time you visit, good for kids
Disadvantages: Uphill, not suitable for people with walking difficulties or wheelchairs

...I've been to Trentham Monkey Forest on three occasions and now and I am so looking forward to going again when the weather warms up a little this year. Its a little to cold to wander round at the moment. Initially when I went to the Monkey Forest for the second time, I did actually wonder why I was bothering as I had been before and at the end of the day what's going to be different the second time from the first but it is actually a different experience every time. Trentham Monkey Forest is a 60 acre forest, home to over 140 free roaming Barbary macaques. The Barbary macaque, normally would be found in the mountains of ALgeria and Morocco, possibly Gibraltar and is a tail-less Macaque. The animal is classed as a monkey as opposed to an ape, there is normally confusion over this due to it being tail-less. At the moment there are...
