Connect Product First
Advantages: Two USB Ports
Disadvantages: Backspace gets in the way of subtraction
...For those of us that have moved into the world of laptops which have poxy keyboards with no numeric keypads, getting one of these babies is a must. This beastie cost me a tenner from maplin, and it also doubles as a mini USB hub so for using one USB port on my laptop this baby gives me two more it is a win win situation for geeks.
Instalation into Windaes XP is a peice of pee, simply find a suitable USB port and away you go. You will see worrying signs saying USB Human Interface Device appearing on your screen, but that means it is working. It is also compatable with USB2 devices so us uber-geeks will be satisfied by that.
Now onth the typing, it does all the tings you would expect a numeric keypad to do. and it has a tripple zero button which is really handy for typing in big numbers with lots of zeros behind it. The only negative...

A phone with a daft keypad
Advantages: Easy to use email and text mailboxes, maps, internet browser
Disadvantages: Worst keypad layout ever!
...have to hold it down for a few seconds, which is fine. However, to switch it back on all you have to do is touch the button. I haven't yet found a way around this, i.e. locking the keypad while off. This can be really annoying because although the phone has a flight mode (turn off all connections), I still prefer to have it completely off while flying, so I have to make sure I don't put it somewhere that it could accidentally get switched on (like in my messy handbag!).
Another bad point is that on the side of the phone there is a button you can press to activate voice commands - this is where you record a name in the voice notes section, and when you press this button you say a name and it dials the number. I have never used this function, and neither have any of my colleagues. However it is EXTREMELY easy to press this button by...

This is a tidy piece of kit.
Advantages: Price, quality, cable wind.
Disadvantages: None
...Laptops are a great invention for their portability and compact size. One problem with them is most of them do not have a integrated keypad as on a full size keyboard. This is not a problem for someone who only occasionally uses numbers as you can use the number keys that run along the top of the keyboard. But if you are like my wife who has just started a new career and brings a lot more work home on her laptop. Most of the work she does at home is inputting numerical data. Using the number keys along the top slowed her down as she had to look at them all the time.
One day in Maplin we spotted this Qware USB keypad at a unbelievable price of £4 (should have bought them all EBay profit) as these were retailing at £22.99 at another shop.
The number pad is full size and is light at 145g but feels well made not cheap. The colour is...

Great camera, solid phone, touch and keypad, some annoyences!
Advantages: Widgets, solid phone, great camera, touch screen and keypade, innovatine Amoled screen
Disadvantages: Awkward camera key, some key options could be improved, battery doesn't last long
...Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition
8-megapixel camera
3G
Auto focus
Camera face detection
Bluetooth®
Quadband.
Touchscreen with keypad.
Having recently upgraded to the tocco ultra I thought I would tell you a little about the phone. This is the first touch screen phone I have owned and I have to say I have found it very easy to use.
As it is a Samsung, they have stayed true to their concept of using numbers to choose certain options and there is also a slide-out keypad so you're not forced to go completly touch screen until you feel ready for it.
The phone itself feel solid and compact, it is a nice size and weight. I adjusted to this phone almost straight away having used a Samsung G600 for 18 months.
The home screen has a column neatly tucked to the left hand side which you can open and are then presented...

Which is it? A mousey mousey? A paddy-paddy?
Advantages: 2-in-1 mouse and numeric keypad
Disadvantages: Big, unergonomic, short USB lead, stiff scroll wheel
...~~~ Overview & Appearance ~~~
The iOne Scorpius Keypad looks just like that weird cluster of numeric keys situated to the right of your PC keyboard, crossed with a pocket calculator and then interbred with an optical mouse. Made in black, silver and two shades of grey plastic, the Scorpius features 19 keys for numeric input, a right and left mouse button and a grey scroll wheel for vertical page navigation. The underside of the device is graced with a red laser to monitor movement and the whole device is supplied with a rather stingy 2.5" (75cm) silver(ish) USB lead for connection to your PC. The left hand side of the mouse also features a mysterious silver "Mode Switch" button which toggles the three tiny green LEDs mounted just above the numeric keypad.
~~~ Use ~~~
Like any modern USB optical mouse, connection...
Logitech V250 Cordless Mouse and Number Pad
Advantages: no need to use the touchpad on a notebook
Disadvantages: cannot store USB wireless connector within the mouse
...tedious. You either have to lift your finger from the pad to press the button or you have to use your other hand. I find this tedious and it means that I can't be eating a sandwich or drinking a coffee whilst using the touch pad.
I also hate the fact that laptops don't have a separate set of key for the numeric keypad. Instead laptops generally use the existing character keys to give you a crude representation of a numeric keypad. Usually you have to press a special key near the shift/ctrl button and then press one of the existing keys to get a number up on the key. Alternatively you can use the row of numbered keys below the Function Keys. Again I find this tedious especially when I know that I can enter numbers rapidly on a standard keyboard.
The Logitech V250 addresses both these issues.
I bought one recently from Office World for £36...
The LG secret offers the best of touch screen and keypad
Advantages: Sleek, stylish design
Disadvantages: touch screen too sensitive
...The Lg secret offers you the comfort of a keypad and the novelty of a touch screen face. I chose the phone becasue of it's sleek design and after a year of using the phone I still like the way it looks. I think it is actually my favourite phone so far.
The phone is light and thin so is easy to keep in pockets unnoticed. As a girl when I don't want to take a handbag with me, I need a phone that my husband is not going to mind holding.
The phone is really easy to use and is very similar to nokia and sony erricson layouts. The touch screen can be very sensitive however and I have often become frustrated with making mistakes or pressing the wrong function during a call.
The games and camera are really good fun....
Logitech DiNovo Media Desktop
Advantages: Perfect Keyboard, Lightweight, Excellent Build Quality,
Disadvantages: Cost, Software
...never really use the number keypad so it was onto a loser with me from the start. Keeping an open mind I tried to use the more advanced features such as being able to receive MSN and email alerts to the built in LCD screen. Unfortunately this was a complete failure in my experience - ok, it worked but was completely useless and drained the battery MUCH faster, typically reducing the life to weeks...
=Mouse
I was a little worried about making the switch to a wireless mouse, having been quite an avid user of FPS style games I was worried about lag. My worries were to prove unfounded - I found very little lag other than the initial "sluggishness" caused by the increased weight of the mouse as compared to my previous one. That heavy feeling was quickly lost, and felt completely natural after a few days.
Battery life is also pretty good...
Another Nokia with an unnececerily odd keypad
Advantages: Good camera/video camera, MP3 player, bluetooth
Disadvantages: Oddly layed out keypad, no removable memory cards
...To be honest, the only reason I got this phone is because of the contract deal it is on. I get 500 anytime any network minutes for £25 a month and a free Nokia 3G camera, video phone. Other phones available on the same deal at the time were either twice the size or made by LG who previously had very few phones on the UK market and as I had to have the phone for 12 months I decided on the Nokia as it is a name i know and put a certain amount of trust into.
This doesn't mean I've been disappointed by the handset, though, if anything I've been surprisingly impressed. Apart from the obvious problems I was going to have with the phone such as writing a text and taking peoples numbers with any speed and efficiency due to the utterly daft keypad layout (why oh why did they bother?), this phone does everything I want it to and a tiny bit more...
