Get Safely from A to B with Garmin nuvi 1340

Advantages: Not as annoying as I thought
Disadvantages: Pricey

...Why I Bought It I finally gave in a traded my AA route finder notes (which always got me from A to B) for a Garmin nuvi 1340. I have to admit that these things annoy me so much, shouting directions at you every 5 seconds, but I thought I ought to at least try to get with the 21st century, plus everyone I know as one, so they can?t be that bad can they? I managed to pick mine up for £139 from Pixmania, which was a bargain, as I?d seen one in my local Halford store whilst shopping for oil again! (but that?s another story) for £179! Just proving its worth shopping around. Being a girlie the first thing that attracted me to this was its slender build (I know I know!). Its only 15mm thick and therefore isn?t too bulky to pop into the handbag when I?ve arrived at my destination and its quite light too ? double bonus. The 1340 model...

Garmin Nuvi 200w Sat Nav System

Advantages: Easy to use, does what it's suppsed to do!
Disadvantages: Satellite pairing takes ages, no mains charger!

After extensive researching, price comparison and review reading, I came across the Garmin Nuvi 200w, and a sat nav system that seemed to impress greatly, so i decided to take the plunge and bought one. Much like many of the reviews I had read on the Nuvi 200w, my first impressions of it were very good. I bought the system off the Littlewoods website, as it had been reduced in a seasonal sale that they were having. This meant that the system was on offer for around £30 less than on any other reputable site that I could find it on. The product was well packaged, securely and compactly fitted to an inner cardboard shelf, that meant that the sat nav was unable to move or rattle within the box, therefor limiting the chance of damage during postal delivery to a minimum. Garmin Nuvi 610T, perfect every time...

Advantages: Quick, clear, easy to use, multi functions, bluetooth, connects with mobile for hands free

...The Garmin Nuvi 610T is a very good sat nav unit. In the box you receive the unit itself, windscreen mount, charger leads, cd rom, usb pc connecting cable, instruction manual, a dashboard mount and a tmc aerial. On receiving the unit it was incredibly easy to set up. In fact straight from the box its ready to go once you've attached it to the windscreen, it simply takes a few moments to locate satellites and establish where it is. The windscreen mounting bracket is of good quality, the plastic is robust and in 6 months the suction cup hasn't worked loose at all; its still exactly where I placed it initially. You get a decent length of lead on the charging cable that fits into any standard 12V cigarette lighter socket. The tmc lead is also a decent enough length and comes with two suction cups to keep it neatly attached to...

...Edit: My review here is based on the Nuvi-250 (non-widescreen version). I bought one of these recently as my old ipaq-based TomTom is getting more outdated each day and there doesn't seem to be a reasonably-priced way to update it. I have to say I was expecting better. The manual is small because there aren't as many features as you get with TomTom. For example TomTom allows you to set the distance between your POI and it's alert sounding. This Garmin seems to sound the alert at it's own preset distance warning which you can't change from the menu system. It also seems to take a while to find the satellites. We went to our local park on saturday which is about a mile from home and we were practically on the car-park before it locked on. The worst part though was how innacurate the maps seem to be. the nuvi 255W - a good friend when you're lost

Advantages: nice design, friendly software, pretty accurate preinstalled maps

...I will start by saying that I never used a navigation device before, so for me, there is no term of comparison. I nevertheless had to buy one, considering that I usually travel across the country and I plan a sightseeing vacation in the south of France on my own. The reason why I picked Garmin was first that the internet and my friends made me believe this is one of the best choices available. Second, that it came with a proprietary set of maps, so I wouldn't have to chase them later. And third, because I liked the minimalistic design of both the unit and the software. ...Garmin Nuvi 310 is an excellent piece of kit for people looking for affordable compact navigator with lot of features. Features Navigation I have bought UK maps preloaded, and the navigation menu provides options to go to an address or search from custom POI list, like Food, Fuel, Lodging, Intersections, Attractions, Shopping, Parking, Entertainment, Recreation etc. It also gives options to search a custom POI nearest to a location/address which I find very usefull, if you want to check facilities available at an address where you are going. Garmin NUVI 660T

Advantages: Clear mapping, robust, good range of options, highly portable
Disadvantages: Sometimes tells you theres a junction when there isn't

...The Garmin NUVI 660T is a very robust and solid unit. Very clear mapping, good options for configuration, and generally, it gets you where you want to be (which is good!). At times it tells you to turn when actually it's just a bend in the road, but its better than ending up in the hedge! You can also walk with this one as the charge holds really well compared to other rival satnavs. The upsides? Robust, clear mapping, clear voices (though they can all be annoying, particularly when you go the wrong way!), good range of options and highly portable. Handy if you can't find your way to the shops! Downsides? Sometimes tells you to turn when there's no junction and sometimes sends you the wrong way down a one way street (yes same as the rest!). Overall though, with the most up to date mapping, this is an excellent sat nav!...

...Purchasing the Garmin Nuvi..... I bought this unit for my girlfriend as a present sometime back in the hope that it would help her find the exit out of that proverbial paper bag. At the time of purchase, I had narrowed my choice down to two satellite navigation systems that both fell well within my price range; the Tomtom One and the Garmin Nuvi 300, both of which contained GB maps only. Based on my previous experience in using handheld GPS units for hiking and general map work and the fact that Garmin are well represented within the GPS world, I chose the Nuvi over the Tomtom.
