...I had my eyes on this player for a long time, and finally decided to treat myself and buy one. I was not disappointed! With the NW-A1000, Sony have managed to create a small, incredibly portable and stylish player, with great sound quality and superb battery life. The design is quite unique - when turned off, the intuitive screen blends into the player. The first issue on most people's minds with regards to this model is whether it is worth paying a little bit extra and buying the size up, with a 20GB hard drive. Another member of my family had this model, and I personally found it a little too large in dimensions. It didn't slip into my pocket easily, and was bulkier in my hands than my smaller 6GB model. Even though the machine is "only" 6GB, it can cope with more songs than a standard player due to the ATRAC compression...

...overall this is a quality machine and the device itself outweighs the odd computer glitch. The software updates get downloaded automatically anyway, so I'm sure Sony are working to bring it up to scratch. Buy the NW-A3000 and enjoy....

Sony 6Gb NWA1000 MP3 Player

...The Sony Walkman NW-A1000 6Gb MP3 player is very user friendly. It has more than enough space to store most of the music you would need for the car or gym. As Sony were the original personal music centre creators, its kind of ironic that they have made a good, usable music player. The player itself is more blue in colour rather than violet (although the earphones definately look violet - I've replaced them for other Sony earphones) You need Sonic stage software rather than the 'Connect' software that it comes with, this can sometimes struggle to convert MP3s onto the player which is a pain. It means that on occasion, because the mp3 format isn't recognised (God Knows Why?) you need to burn the files onto a CD, then import the CD onto the music library for placing onto the MP3 Player. I've not had any issues with the device...

...I recently spent 2 weeks working in London and commuting to my office using the tube. Everywhere I looked, people were listening to Ipods. It sort of reminds me of the mobile phone market where Nokia were/have been seen as market leaders and their phones as being "must haves" on people's lists, despite the emergence of other brands such as Sony and Samsung. ...The NW-A3000 is the first harddisk player I have seen which I actually like the appearance of. I looked at all the available colours in the shop before I chose and the black is definitely the most classy looking. I thought I would get a bit sick of the purple in a few months time, and I had trouble seeing the screen on the silver model, no such problems with this one though. In the box you get the player, a cable to connect it to your computer , an adapter to charge the player via the mains and a few leaflets. You also get a driver and software CD which contains the user manual. I was a little disappointed by this, I still like to recieve a real paper manual, especially for a product this expensive. I have had my NW-A3000 for about 3 years now, I have dropped it on carpet, wood floors, stone/pavement many many times, had my keys crushed in to it making a crack on the from the large round button to the middle of the screen, and a dent on the form I don't know what and it still works just as well as when I got it, I'm sure I would of killed an iPod by now. Brilliant alternative to iPod

Advantages: Excellent design, very small, easy to use
Disadvantages: Supplied software difficult to use, can be hard to see in bright light

...the volume control on rather than the walkman itself and it has some good preset equaliser settings. The only downside is the software that is originally supplied with these walkmans, it is very slow to transfer music and difficult to use. I didn't use it for long until I discovered that sony had released an updated version of the software (now called SonicStage) which is a lot easier to use and now works brilliantly. So my advice would be to forget the CD supplied with the walkman and install SonicStage (which is available through Sony's main site, or just google it) Overall though, the Sony NW-A1000 walkman is an excellent competitor to the Apple iPod and in my opinion has a lot more useful features on it, such as the intelligent shuffle and the artist link facility.
