The Charm Of Sharm
Advantages: Friendly locals, nice beaches, family orientated, hot, good for diving
Disadvantages: Some of the locals can be pushy, sunburn!
...Myself and my boyfriend have just returned from an 11 night stay in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.
Where is Sharm El Sheikh?
Sharm el-Sheikh is probably one of the most popular places for people to visit in Egypt and it is certainly the most developed tourist resort. It is situated on the Sinai Peninsula.
How Long Does It Take To Get To Sharm?
The flight to Sharm takes just over 5 hours from any of the London Airports which isn?t too bad.
Sharm Airport
We were told before we went on holiday that Sharm airport is really manic but we didn?t find that at all, this could be due to that fact that they had a new terminal open earlier this year.
The airport is fairly small, especially considering that I am comparing it to the London Airports.
Avoid the local men with the trollies for your luggage, they will try and charge you £2...

Sharm el Sheikh
Advantages: great weather for just a 5 1/2 hour flight, value for money
Disadvantages: hassle from shopkeepers
...destinations in the world. The corals here are fantastic. Many hotels have house reefs, Sharks Bay is a good area to be based. You can take boat trips to lots of dive sites, the most popular being Ras Mohammed.
Quad bikes in the desert, great fun.
Camel ride and star gazing, after a camel ride at sunset you are taken to a Bedouin tent in the desert where you can drink mint tea and watch the stars. Sounds wacky but the sky here is so clear it feels like you can reach up and pluck a star out of the sky.
Also day trips to Luxor and Cairo available, but except a long day.
Shopping:
First of all you have got to haggle, it is expected and actually quite good fun once you get into it. Naama Bay has lots of shops, selling all kinds of goods. They even have shops calling themselves 'hassle free' shops! For better prices head to old Sharm...

charming sharm
Advantages: diving is excellent
Disadvantages: pushy shop owners
...charming sharm, thats what it says as you enter. this resort is still in major development. security is tight so expect to see guards at the enterance to your hotel. this was a little unnearving at times especially as they all carry guns. many of the hotels are all inclusive which is great as a lot of the restaurants are dubious to say the least. we say meat being cut in the street in the heat of the day! naama bay is the main nightlife/shopping area in sharm. we didnt like it and will avoid next time. the egyptions were very pushy and rude if you didnt visit their shops. i really did want to do some shopping in sharm but struggled greatly. if you get the chance leave the resort and do some trips. any diving trip will be fab - the fish are amazing. the mt sinai trip is amazing but not for the faint hearted - its a 3 hr climb in the dark...

Sharm el Shiekh - Dive in
Advantages: Weather, diving, friendliness, hotel stds and price
Disadvantages: Adjusting to Arab culture and being pestered
...threat later though)
Anyway here goes...................
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHERE IS NAAMA BAY - SHARM EL SHIEKH
Sharm el Shiekh is placed very close to the peninsula of an area called Sinai in Egypt but is actually a triangular strip of desert between the mainland Egypt and Israel/Jordan and Saudi Arabia (see map below). It is on the coast of the Red Sea.
Sharm el shiekh old town is actually on a cliff top, the main beach area here is Naama Bay which is at cliff base level and slightly further up the coast. There is a 10 min drive between Namma Bay and Sharm el Sheikh (old town). Naama bay sea front has many fine hotels all along the front.
The first morning/evening you will see is why it is called the Red Sea, it is surrounded by hills/mountains that have...

Sharm el Sheikh - first time impressions
Advantages: good value for money, the best for diving and snorkelling, friendly people
Disadvantages: "Come sign my guestbook"
...sign my guestbook in your language" - you'll most guaranteed end up buying something you don't want or need. There is lots of shopping opportunities, but if you do not want to buy anything, a firm but friendly "No, thank you" will be sufficient. Haggling is a national sport - you will HAVE to haggle, it's fun and you can make real bargains. We bought a Sheesha pipe in the end for E£ 50, which was first offered for E£ 280, after "threatening" to leave the shop without buying anything. Only in shops with price tagged items you can not haggle, in all other shops it's a must. Go shopping in Old Sharm, it's cheaper than at Naama Bay, but the shop owners are more persistant in trying to sell you stuff.
********** SAFETY **********

Coral Sea Resort Sharm
Advantages: Good value for money.
Disadvantages: No lift.
...'s on a first come first served/push basis. It can be quite amusing when the Captain's are all shouting at each other. Expect some nudging going on, so hold on tight.
Make sure you use the bottled water for brushing your teeth. I took Mothercare Travel Sterilising Bags for the baby's things. I also packed a small kettle and additional food with antibacterial wipes for the high chairs. We didn't have any tummy problems and ate fresh food (no salad or fruit salad).
Bad points -
1. very noisy beach bar to the left of the hotel, which went on till 11pm some nights. This is not run by the hotel, so not their fault.
2. No lifts - anywhere. Not even on the 2nd floor accommodation. We had our 1 yr old with us and had to carry the pram up and down to get to reception.
3. Dirty floors in the room, even after mopping - we didn't realise until we saw the dirt...

Sharm- My experience
Advantages: Sun,snorkling, Excursions
Disadvantages: Food
...I have travelled to Sharm El Sheikh twice in the past 2 years and can be a very enjoyable place if you get as much information about the place before you go especially your HOTEL. It is definitly worth looking through many hotels before making any desicion, like the saying goes 'never judge a book by its cover' and this is true when looking at hotels as some of the best looking hotels can be the worst in Egypt.
It is also important to find out about the food served at your hotel especially if you have children. The food is usually the same every night with the odd dishes being different so it is worth considering and putting money aside to eat out because if you are quite an adventurous eater, it can get boring!
Travelling outside of your hotel can seem quite scary and a challenge but excursions can be great fun. For example...

Sharm el Melt!
Advantages: Beautiful place, friendly service, good hotels
Disadvantages: Intimidating, too hot
...My girlfriend and I took a two week break to Sharm mid-July this year, flying from East Midlands Airport the flight took a little under 6 hours.
Upon arrival to the airport we were informed that the airport was a Military Airport and reps were not allowed inside the building, this scared us a little. After getting off the plane we were greeted by guards with rifles who escourted us to the arrivals desk where we were pursuaded to buy Visas for about £15 each. Take note, you will only need a visa if you intend to leave Sharm ie visit pyramids, visit bedouin town. After collecting our luggage which did arrive very quickly we took the short trip to the coaches outside where we were met by our rep, along the way were asked by locals if we wished to use trolleys to take out luggage for a charge of £2 (our luggage had wheels! Ha...

Sharm El Sheikh - Paradise?
Advantages: The weather, the people, the scenery, the hotel, the sea, the fish....
Disadvantages: Can get very hot in the summer period!
...On Thursday May 26th 2005, myself, my mum, my dad and my brother went on a family holiday to Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. It was the first time we had been abroad for 4 years, the first time we had been on a plane for 4 years, the first time we had been to Africa - ever.
All my life I had dreamed of going to Egypt, mainly Cairo to see the Pyramids, as I had always wanted to become an archaeologist. I collected souveneirs from Museums and shops relating to Ancient Egypt, an amazing period in the worlds history filled with grand designs, architecture and beliefs. I collected a childrens magazine on Ancient Egypt and read up about the era in books both at home and at school. I was fascinated by everything I read and was determined from then on to visit the Great Pyramids at Giza, one seventh of the wonders of the Ancient World...
