Disadvantages: Terrible bed

...My husband had to go to Manchester for a meeting at fairly short notice and would be staying over the night before. As I'm not working at the moment, I decided to tag along - any excuse to go shopping in Manchester for a few hours. Unfortunately, it being the 4th March, Manchester United were playing at home in the Champions League and, despite the best efforts of his company travel people, the nearest they could get at a price they were willing to pay - £58 room and £7.50 breakfast - was the Oldham Central Premier Inn (about 12 miles from the Gmex where we were planning to park). Now this hotel is literally right next to Oldham football ground and they were playing at home but we had absolutely no problem getting a room! We actually hadn't realised that the game was on, otherwise we would have pushed it a bit on the way up...

Psycho Alley

Advantages: in depth and well thought out investigation
Disadvantages: Poor insight into women

...Background: This is a new author to me, so when I saw it in the library I thought it was worth a look at. The only problem was half way through it; I by accident posted it back through the library letterbox instead of the one I had already read. Luckily I managed to go to the library at Lunchtime and get it back, I cannot think of many more frustrating things than half completing a crime novel so not knowing the ending, but I was lucky on this occasion. About the author: Nick Oldham was born in Lancashire in 1956. He spent 30 years in the Police force before retiring in 2005. Since then he has turned his attention full time to writing and so far had written 13 crime novels. All of which are centred around DCI Henry Christie exploits in and around the town of Fleetwood, near Blackpool. Synopsis of the book...

...unable to book dinner on three nights, so for our booking it was a straight £52.00 a night, per room for three nights, including breakfast. LOCATION 9 / 10 Obviously the rating here is for the location in relation to our booking i.e. as a business base in the east Manchester / Oldham area. From this point of view, the Bower at Chadderton is actually superbly located, only a minute from either junction 21 or 22 on the M60 to the north east of Manchester. The centre of Oldham is around seven minutes away by car; the Pennine towns of Blackburn and Accrington are little more than thirty minutes away. You may well not think of this as a holiday, or short break destination. There is a lot in this area to see, whatever your interests and staying at the Bower, especially if you are travelling by car, is going to be a lot more convenient...

...i can remember when this team was in the top flight-those were the days-back in the 94/95 season. what has happened since then? oldham have found themselves on a slippery slope that they are unable to get off of! things are looking a little better though and they appear to be on the way up again,which is long overdue. i think most of their fans must have died of a heart attack due to the rollercoaster ride the club has given them over the past few seasons. oh well, theres one born every minute!...

Review of Oldham

Oldham confounds fans again but does so sensitively and beautiful

Advantages: Beatufiul reinterpreataions, heartleft vocals, great songs
Disadvantages: perhaps a little too nashville slick on occasion

...Will Oldham has had a number of personas over the years and has worked under the names Palace brothers, Palace Music, Will Olham and Bonnie Prince Billy (amongst others I'm sure). This release comes under Bonnie Prince Billy but is the least Bonnie prince Billy sounding album he has made... and for that matter the least Will Oldham sounding album. This is glorious, unadulterated country music. What it shows off is how good and versatile Oldham's song writing actually is. These songs are all reimaginations and rearrangements of songs previously recorded under his palace guise. As Palace they were lo-fi, discordant and mostly inaccessible. Here they are lush and beautiful thanks to the help of producer Mark Nevers (of Lambchop) and an array of Nashville's best session players. Many see this record as an Oldham prank or parody country album...

...The Avant Hotel in Oldham is operated by Menzies Hotels, a small chain of approximately 16 hotels in the UK who have established themselves as a credible four star hotel operator since their inception in 1992. Like the other main hotel in the area, the Swallow Bower, the Avant is marketed as Manchester East, not Oldham and indeed it is a very suitable location for a visit to Manchester, as it is only about five miles from the City Centre itself, and only a mile from J22 of the M60. Our destination was in fact in the other direction, to a restaurant on Saddleworth Moor, for the second big family occasion in Greater Manchester in as many weeks, and for us the Avant proved to be the most logical hotel for ourselves, in an area which does not have a huge amount of choice, hotel wise. My sister, who was also staying at the hotel...

...The opening song "Bittersweet Symphony" from the album "Urban Hymns" by The Verve was one of the most haunting sounds of 1997. It dominated the charts and airwaves that year and has continued to be used as background music in television programmes and advertisements, including those for Nike and Vauxhall. It is one of those tunes that you will surely have heard even if you cannot place its origin. The song became a bittersweet experience for its author Richard Ashcroft.
