A poor offering from Olympus

Advantages: Takes AAA batteries and....er.....er...hmmmm.... takes AAA batteries
Disadvantages: Awful screen, not user friendly, feels cheap and nasty, made out of inferior materials etc. etc.

...I needed a new digital camera and fast and only having the ability to get to Argos (because of the late night opening times) the camera had to be available from Argos. The other criteria I set included a minimum of 12 mega pixels, face detection, a large screen, powered by AAA batteries and costing no more than £100. With the large number of cameras satisfying my criteria I thought I would have no problems in finding something suitable, it?s just a shame the Argos in Norwich is so poor and seems to have very little stock, so my choice was limited. Don't buy an Olymous X-42 ---- picture quality is dreadful.

Advantages: Classic good looks -- nice controls

...For anybody thinking of buying a digital camera for Christmas I would strongly advise against buying the Olympus X-42. We bought an X-42 to replace our 4 year old Samsung Digimax A6. The dinky little 12mp Olympus cost more than the 6mp Samsung did over 4 years ago but in comparison the picture quality is dreadful, the lens seems good (as one would expect from Olympus) but when you try and blow up & crop an image it appears grainy and lacks detail in fact my old 1.2mp mobile phone takes pictures that are as almost good, I suspect the image sensor is just not up to the job. The other fault is it takes an age to process a picture before the next one can be taken. Olympus E-10 Great Value 2nd Hand

Advantages: Good picture quality, feature packed.
Disadvantages: Heavy, lens not inerchangable.

Described as an 8x21 reverse porroprism design, this means you get 8x magnification (6.4 degrees field of view) with a 21mm objective lens - quite adequate for daylight use, in a 'compact' format - the front lenses step inwards towards the central axis instead of outwards in traditional binoculars. I would far rather settle for better quality optics at a lower magnification rate than struggle with high magnification poorer optics, the images are less fuzzy, easier to get in view, and don't shake about as much. Porroprism binoculars have for many years been considered better than the alternative 'roof prism' variety, and whilst modern materials and computer aided design have reduced that difference significantly, they are still cheaper and lighter. ...This is a good quality product that offers good value for money in the very short term. Although as with most electronic products, the value will deteriorate over time and should be able to get a cheaper version next year. Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Advantages: Latest Release of Mac OS X; Cheap for those upgrading from Leopard
Disadvantages: No support for PPC processor (which is understandable, however)

If your transitioning from a PC to a Mac with Snow Leopard, I'm sure you'll appreciate the graphically stunning interface although may take some time to get use to the differences. The major difference is the mouse tracking speed; each operating system uses a different tracking algorithm - Windows uses a different algorithm to Mac OS X. E10 OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Advantages: Super clear prints and so similar to an SLR the transition is easy
