A poor offering from Olympus

Advantages: Takes AAA batteries and....er.....er...hmmmm.... takes AAA batteries
Disadvantages: Awful screen, not user friendly, feels cheap and nasty, made out of inferior materials etc. etc.

The picture quality is terrible, even when you do get a reasonable shot, and I have to admit that my other half?s Kodak Easy share, with its massive 6.2 mega pixels, takes better pictures and the quality is not marginally better, it is much better. One thing I found very annoying about the X-42 is the screen. Whilst it is large it is the worst screen I have ever used in my life. Unless the light was perfect it was impossible to see what you were actually taking a picture of, which was made even harder by the non-existent view-finder, and this happened in both light and dark conditions. Trying to shield the screen was pointless as it did little good. My first digital camera, purchased over 8 years ago, was an Olympus that used XD picture cards, instead of the more common SD cards, and I never understood why. I thought that Olympus would...

Advantages: Light, compact, excellent optical quality
Disadvantages: compromises have still been made

Described as an 8x21 reverse porroprism design, this means you get 8x magnification (6.4 degrees field of view) with a 21mm objective lens - quite adequate for daylight use, in a 'compact' format - the front lenses step inwards towards the central axis instead of outwards in traditional binoculars. I would far rather settle for better quality optics at a lower magnification rate than struggle with high magnification poorer optics, the images are less fuzzy, easier to get in view, and don't shake about as much. Porroprism binoculars have for many years been considered better than the alternative 'roof prism' variety, and whilst modern materials and computer aided design have reduced that difference significantly, they are still cheaper and lighter. Don't buy an Olymous X-42 ---- picture quality is dreadful.

Advantages: Classic good looks -- nice controls

...For anybody thinking of buying a digital camera for Christmas I would strongly advise against buying the Olympus X-42. We bought an X-42 to replace our 4 year old Samsung Digimax A6. The dinky little 12mp Olympus cost more than the 6mp Samsung did over 4 years ago but in comparison the picture quality is dreadful, the lens seems good (as one would expect from Olympus) but when you try and blow up & crop an image it appears grainy and lacks detail in fact my old 1.2mp mobile phone takes pictures that are as almost good, I suspect the image sensor is just not up to the job. The other fault is it takes an age to process a picture before the next one can be taken. A real shame because it is a charming little camera and having enjoyed owning several Olympus cameras in the past I was expecting good things from it. I am now trying to get...

...This is a good quality product that offers good value for money in the very short term. Although as with most electronic products, the value will deteriorate over time and should be able to get a cheaper version next year. It's a great little device with plenty of features that I would highly recommend. This really is a wonderful piece of kit that should go well with many accessories because it really looks good.
