Advantages: Compact, Lightweight, Stylish and 4.0 megapixels means you can print up to A3, still with a high quality printout.
Disadvantages: No protective case included and the larger xD-Picture Cards are highly priced.

...First things first, A name you can trust "OLYMPUS", they are used internationally by all the best photographers in both digital and standard film types. The C-420L is getting a little old now and has been superseded by many other models and brands, BUT, if you can find one either new or second hand you're in for some great snapping fun. They are very well built and really look the part unlike many of the more recent digicams, and believe it or not they are more than capable of 99% of modern featured cams. You get 20 High Quality shots or 80 normal shots per memory card, and memory cards are very easily available at any good computer or photographic shop. The high quality shots are just that with a resolution around 480 DPI, they are very clear and easy to work with and with the right printer and paper it's hard to tell the difference...

Advantages: Light weight, good range of functions, dust reduction system.
Disadvantages: Only just adequate in low light conditions.

...I bought this camera around 18 months ago and have found it to be reliable so far. The 'dust shake' mechanism that activates when you switch it on helps prevent dust build-up on the sensor which has to be a major plus point. This is my first digital slr although I am familiar with film slr cameras and, also, basic compact digital cameras. I found that the transition to more advanced digital photography relatively simple with the E500. The E500 is fairly light to carry but not so light that it impinges on the ingegrity of the camera. The photographer is in control of complexity of use:from fully manual to automatic with useful priority modes in between. The camera itself has a metal casing and so has a sleek feel and look to it. It's very light weight and compact making it very easy to carry around in a handbag or while, (and most importantly) taking pictures! I found that it took only 5 - 10 minutes to get the camera working from out of the box. It was so simple, I didn't take that much notice of the manual.
