This camera has altered my opinon of digital cameras, and although not converted, I am happy with it. Being a graphic designer, I am able to manipulate the images nicely, but its not the same as using the old fashioned methods in a dark room. The automatic focus is excellent, as well as the zoom, so if you want a point and click camera, that does a bit more... this could be for you. If you like to be able to have a bit more control over your photographs then this could be for you too and if you fancy yourself as a press photgrapher than you can use the feature which takes continuous photographs ... a versatile little devil it is. Review of Olympus E-300

A very good reliable camera.

Advantages: Compact and fun to use, compatable with OM lenses with adapter.
Disadvantages: quite a bit of noise at high isos.

...point with this camera, is that the sensor timeses your lenses focal lens by 2, which means my 75-300mm lens becomes a 150-600mm (equivalent of 35mm camera) lens, ideal for wildlife photography which is one of my main uses for my camera. the lenses that come with the camera are very good, offering a range of equivalent 28mm-300mm, which is good for most purposes. unfortunately, i have not used any of the rival cameras for a great deal of time so i cant really compare, but i wouldnt swap this camera for any rival camera at this time. it is also great value for money, the cheapest i've seen on the market, and yet it seems to be better than many more expensive cameras. it comes with olympus master, as well as a cd manual. olympus master is relatavely good, but i recommend using picasa2, which is supplied free by google. the main...

A poor offering from Olympus

Advantages: Takes AAA batteries and....er.....er...hmmmm.... takes AAA batteries
Disadvantages: Awful screen, not user friendly, feels cheap and nasty, made out of inferior materials etc. etc.

Micro SD card adapter (i.e. an XD card with a slot for a Micro SD card) but it doesn?t come with a card. What is the point of this? I just can?t understand why Olympus cameras just don?t have a Micro SD card slot, like so most modern cameras do. It makes no sense to me. One positive about the X-42 is the 5x optical zoom. It is actually quite good and it is much better than the 3x optical zoom my other half?s camera has. Conclusion The X-42 is an awful camera and Olympus should be ashamed of it. Olympus E-30. Still not up there with the big boys?

Advantages: Fold out LCD screen, Image Stabilization, Zuiko lens quality, Picture quality, Flash options

The sheer number of buttons dotted around the cameras facades are enough to put off anyone who isn't familiar with the functions of an SLR and I would have preferred some of the functions shifted to the menus. The battery life is very good at around 500 shots but it does take around 5 hours to charge with the standard charger (a faster one is available from Olympus). It is the same battery as the Olympus E-3, which may be a consideration for people with multiple cameras, and the optional battery-grip allows the use of AA batteries. Image Stabilization is via CCD shift and now has 3 modes, with vertical panning being catered for. This is worth up to 5 stops of shutter speed if you believe the Olympus documentation. I bought this charger last year because I bought a wireless mouse and keyboard so made more sense getting rechargeable batteries rather than spending money on normal batteries every few weeks. I went with Uniross as they make decent rechargeable batteries and are well known for it. This x-press 300 charges AAA, AA & 9V size batteries. It lets you charge 2 or 4 AA/AAA and one 9V batteries of the same type at the same time. It's suitable for AA, AAA and 9V (PP3) NiCd and NiH batteries. To use AAA batteries you simply flip down a little holder within the charger and it will hold the AAA batteries to charge.
