...I got the hp omnibook about a month ago, to take to university in the autumn. All I really wanted was something to run MS Office, the Net and possibly Solitaire - and for the specs of the machine (P166 MMX, 32Mb etc.) I didn't expect much else. What surprised me was that firstly it starts up and shuts down at about twice the speed of my Celeron 64Mb pc. What else surprised me was that the screen is excellent - especially for a machine this old. All the colors are very crisp and bright, and there is no blurring when the mouse is moved, like you would get with the new HPA screens. It also runs most of the older (budget) games out at the moment. The only gripe would be that the sound card is a bit tinny and the graphics ram a bit weedy. Apart from that, superb.... Read review

...Why did I buy the Tecra 8100? First of all what I wanted was a desktop replacement machine, one on which I could do all my spreadsheet and word stuff as well as play games. I am an engineer so I need good connectivity options as well. The choice was:- Dell Inspiron 3800, 5000, 7500 Toshiba Tecra 8100 HP Omnibook 6000 The Dells are very good machines, I used to old an old 7000 series. The 3800 is light and quite quick, the 5000 has all the multimedia features you need, the 7500 has even more. But... The 3800 is not meant to be used as a desktop replacement, it doesn't have the oomph for that. The 5000 and 7000 are great machines but heavy. The HP Omnibook is the machine I would probably buy by choice except that it is very expensive and uses the ATI graphics card The Tecra is not as expensive as the Omnibook and uses the S3 Savage MX... Audio (Crystal): line ind, microphone, speaker out. The PC has everything that you'll find in a PII-system - exept a PII processor. In other words it has been state-of-the-art, when the PC was launched. That means that today the only new thing you might want to have is a firewire-port, and who needs that, after all? The PC itself is as far as sturdiness is conserned probably the best HP ever made - The only thing I can compare it to is a IBM PC, which everyone knows is the highest quality. ...Linux Mandrake has one good feature. Having done the install, the colors are set on by default when you do a directory listing. Other than that, its awful. When using the installer, it doesn’t repaint properly, so when you expand one of the trees to specify what packages you want to install you can’t see what you are doing. I was installing this on an HP Omnibook 900 laptop, and a PC, and I couldn’t get 800x600 desktops on either of them. Despite having managed that with every other linux distribution I have used. Also, despite asking for it to install both GNOME and KDE, it set up neither of them as default, instead throwing me into a bare Xwindows session – not pretty. Yes, I know PCPlus reviewed it as the best linux distribution, but in my experience it was nothing but trouble. Don’t bother with it. Get Redhat instead.... Read review

With a memory of 30gb, speed 1.2 ghz and 256mb ram, dvd drive, it was more that I required for my college studies.
