...I first read Ballet Shoes when I was eight. It was the first of Noel Streatfield's books I'd read, and it remains my favourite. I put it away during my teenage years and forgot about it until Christmas 2007 when I watched the BBC adaptation with Emma Watson. I went to Indonesia and got the film on knock-off DVD, and immediately after watching I rang home to get my parents to order me a copy. It was a great welcome home. The book opens with 'Garnie' moving into a huge mansion, filled with fossils. She and her nurse (Nana) are moving in with her uncle. You don't really get any of their story until one day her uncle Matthew arrives home from a trip with a package, containing of all things... a baby! They agree to take the baby and name her Pauline. Scone Shoes

Advantages: comfortable, better fitting shoes at reasonable prices
Disadvantages: limited range, most of them are quite ugly

When I first ordered shoes from the Shoe Tailor, experts in wider-fitting shoes, I measured my feet incorrectly and found that the only shoes in their catalogue that would fit me were their widest, ugliest, most orthopaedic, brown, granny shoes: the type you might wear to go out with your friends for a scone, in your later years. Hence my friends groaningly called them my ?scone shoes? and walked several yards behind me on the way to the pub every night. They were very comfy! ...was managing to hobble around a lot faster in them. Now, the downside with these shoes is that they don?t seem to be sold in shoe shops but rather in little independent stores or stalls. The place I got mine was a small partitioned stand within the local shopping centre run by a middle aged woman who was possibly on day release and definitely drunk. Immediately she told me try on a pair of size 8?s. I did and felt like I was wearing clown shoes. The fact that they were bright orange did not help any. I told her they felt too big and there commenced a lot of her pulling up my trouser leg to see where my heel was, poking my toes and squeezing her hands inside the shoes (whilst my feet were in them). Run Lola Run

Advantages: Enjoyable action, decent violence, gore and Arnie one-liners.
Disadvantages: Missing the intelligence of the source novel making it fairly one-dimesional.

Advantages: Original, fast-paced storytelling, a visceral thrill.
Disadvantages: Hard to work out the thinking behind the action.

...I would just like to write a review on running for charity, although it is something that I may actually have covered in part in some of my previous reviews in some descriptions. However, back to the subject in hand. Advantages: 1. You get fit, as you have to train in order to complete the final run (this is usually by way of a marathon). 2. You get to meet like minded people, although they may not all be running for your own charity (or they may not even be running for charity!). 3. You get a feeling of purpose and a sense of goodness, as you are doing something to not only help yourself but also to benefit others in some way. Disadvantages: 1. The dvd features a blonde Cameron Diaz in jeans and a revealing green top , sitting on a sofa and facing sideways , giving the camera a flirtatious pose. ...We have all heard of the drought conditions that have been experienced in England recently. Unfortunately, although my part of the country is reputed to be "drier than Egypt", this isn't apparent in my garden. Following weeks of rain, the old shoes I had been using outside, finally gave up the ghost and fell apart. My feet were just as wet as they would have been had I been outside with bare feet! This WAS an option - but having seen some of the wildlife that wanders around the garden, NOT something that I chose to do. ...I would just like to offer some thoughts on running, after spending sme time doing it in training for the local half marathon. One of the good things about running is that it actually not only gets you out of the house, but believe it or not actually gets you fit at the same time! It is about one of the only things that helps you to get fit, that doesn't cost a single penny to do! OK, so you have to buy a decent pair of running shoes along with some decent kit - but as an intial outlay, that is nothing compared to the fun that can be had in this hobby. This is also something that can be done with a friend, as you can encourage one another as you go along. Or, you could also always join a running club and meet new like mminded friends at the same time as getting fit (OK, fitter!). However, there are many downsides to running...
