Maxtor OneTouch 4 - Reliable with Good Capacity

Advantages: Large storage capacity, reliable, well designed
Disadvantages: Occassional bleep, non fatal errors

...I have been using the Maxtor OneTouch 4 for almost a year now and so far it has been very reliable and worth every penny. It can store 500 GB which is more than enough for most kinds of media. I use it for storing videos and photos. The 500GB comes in handy for editing and storing lots of .avi files. I also tend to install software onto the Maxtor hard drive as I generally don't have enough space on my computer. The only disadvantage with that is the occassional bleeping sound as the hard drive works hard to access the files I am using. It connects to a USB port on your computer and comes with the USB cable. It also comes with a power cable. Rather than being powered through the USB cable, it is powered by the mains which unfortunately makes it less portable. It also has the brand name Maxtor on the side in shiny black lettering and on the front of the drive (this is covered in protective tape when you open it to protect the finish). There is also a bright white light which pulses when the drive is on and active, in my opinion the light is too large and bright as it illuminates the crack down the middle of the drive where it has been fused together. Installation: Installing the drive is very simple to do. Simply plug your drive in to any USB 2 port and your PC should recognise it and it will load the installation program automatically. The scanner looks very good, is streamlined and modern looking with its attractive new slim line design. It has a USB connection but has no alternative of parallel or serial. It has a side opening rather than it being hinged on the short edge which I found much more convenient in the location I keep it in my computer desk (limited room above so less space required for side opening was great). Installation was simple enough and there is a simple step by step instruction sheet included with pictures so even a novice computer user could install this scanner with little or no problem.
