Onions.
Advantages: Cheap and easy to store.
Disadvantages: Can make you cry.
...What is an onion?
It's a bulb. It has long, narrow tubular leaves, which are usually a green- grey colour. The flowers are always in the form of a ball, made up of tiny, individual flowers, much loved by insects.
Onions belong to the Allium family, which has at least 300 types in it. Some are ornamental and some, such as herbs and vegetables, are edible.
All family members share the same recognisable onion smell. The smell comes from allicins (sulphur compounds) and fumes are given off if any part of the plant is damaged.
These compound chemicals are what make you cry when handling onions, but they also give the distinctive taste that makes them so popular.
Almost every country in the World grows onions in some form and, like many plants that have been known and used by so many cultures, they are either revered or feared. They...

Onions - Red or White
Advantages: Tasty
Disadvantages: make you cry when peeling
...Onions
The onion ?.not only does it make us cry when we peel it but it?s tasty on a sandwich, in quiche, in salads and lots of other recipes, as well as being good for the body.
The onion is a biennial bulb which is planted every year, they are easy to grow and can be left to mature without too much fuss, keep them weed free and you?ll usually get a good crop.
The best varieties to grow are the Ailsa Craig, Bedfordshire Champion, Welsh onion and the Up to Date. These all produce large onions and can be bought in onion sets from the garden centre for around £1.45 upwards, you can however grow them from seed, but so far in my gardening experience I have never grown a huge onion from a seed and only end up with salad like spring onion looking things, so if anyone has any tips on how to grow a good sized onion from seed let me know...

Know Your Onions!
Advantages: Very Versatile, Easy To Grow
Disadvantages: Make Your Eyes Water
...For my latest Ciao review on Vegetables I have chosen to write about Onions. Onions are one of the most widely used of all Vegetables and will no doubt be familiar to just about all of us in one variety or another, but the actual number of varieties available and their versatility is immense.
THE HISTORY
The true origins of the Onion are actually unclear as Onions are made up of a very thin cellular structure and therefore leave virtually no fossil trace. It is believed however that Onions were probably first cultivated in Asia over 5000 years ago.
It is also thought that of the all of the Vegetables in the World the Onion was one of the first to be cultivated as it is easy to grow in most soil types and temperatures. It is also one of the least perishable Vegetables and can be stored and dried for use when food is scarce...

Whitworths dried onions
Advantages: quick no smelly hands
Disadvantages: none
...Whitworths is well known for dried fruit and vegetables - more fruit though I think.
It was 1886 when the business was first formed and it grew rapidly in the 1950's.
Their suppliers now exist in over 80 countries around the world.
Dried onions are a convenient and easy way to add flavour to any dish.
I was made aware of dried onions as a child, my mum used them in dishes such as 'tatty ash' and cottage pie. I asked her why she used them instead of real onions as I remember my nana having onions and pickled onions in bowls of water (not sure why or if I remember correctly). Her reply was that she didn't like onions so that's why she added dried ones, hmmm aren't they still onions but she insisted that they weren't as strong tasting and dissolved in the food so you couldn't taste them (so why put them in?)
As I grew up and got...

Cheese & Onion delights.
Advantages: Great taste, good packet.
Disadvantages: None.
...Walkers crisps are the original and one of the best in my opinion. The crisps are a good size and cut from good potatoes, it is very rare to find a bad crisp in your bag and this is great as I don't have to particularly worry about paying much attention when delving in to the bag and wolfing down a whole packet in 2 minutes flat!
The crisps come in a foil bag (for freshness) with blue colouring (for cheese & onion) and the familiar Walkers logo as well as nutritional information, ingredients and further details on cooking methods, potatoes used and information on Walkers themselves. The bag is very informative and for the purposes of reviewing I had a good old read of the changes that have been made in recent years (less fat and better oil etc) and was astounded by the sheer amount of information that they feel necessary to print...

More than you wanted to know about onions.
Advantages: Cheap, versatile and good for you!
Disadvantages: The smell.
...* Introduction:
Writing reviews on onions seems to be "the" thing to do right now, so I decided to hop aboard the bandwagon and write me own.
I quickly discovered that it is not as easy as one might think. There is so much you can write about onions that it's hard to know where to begin.
I hope you enjoy reading my attempt and that you find it useful. Any questions - Just ask.
* Meet the Allium Family:
Allium is the name given to the onion genus. There is a staggering amount of spices in the genus, over 1250! The onion genus is of the Alliaceae family although it was wrongly classified by Botanists for years as being part of the Liliaceae, (Lilly), family.
Alliums are perennial, (from the Latin per meaning through and annus meaning year), bulbous plants. Perennial plants live for more than two years.
Most species...

Tasty Onions!
Advantages: Do not need much watering, Tasty and keeps the vampires away
Disadvantages: Make you cry :-(
...As part of my review on Onions, I will be reviewing the different types of onion separately. These are normal bulb onions, spring onions, pickling onions, European Welsh onions and Oriental bunching onions.
---------------------------------
Bulb Onions
---------------------------------
We grow bulb onions as annuals. The bulbs come in many shapes and may be rounded, flattened, or they may have a long torpedo-like shape. Bulb onions usually have either a brown or yellow colour skin with a white flesh, although some may have red skins with a pinky coloured flesh. Dependent on the variety you choose, the leaves may grow between 15 and 45cm long. You don't have to grow onions to maturity before you can harvest them. Either way, immature or fully matured onions can be eaten cooked or raw. Not all onions will store well, but most...

Lovely Crunchy Pickled Onions
Advantages: -
Disadvantages: -
...I love a good pickled onion, especially with a nice bit of super mature cheese, or even just out of the jar. I actually go through quite a lot of them at the moment, with them being points free on the weight watchers points plan, I keep them handy for snacking on when I get a little peckish .
Hayward's Traditional Onions cost £1.36 in Asda for a 454g jar . They come in a clear glass jar with a gold colour screw on/off lid . The labels on the jar are clear, enabling you to get a good look at the onions inside . The rear label has all the nutritional info and company contact details, and the front bears a blue and yellow Haywards logo.
The onions here are quite large - certainly a little more than mouthful size, meaning that when you bite into them you get a dribble of vinegar running down your chin! I find that the sharpness...

Tesco Breaded Onion Rings
Advantages: Taste pretty good, good value for money
Disadvantages: Quite unhealthy
...One of my favourite tea-time meals has to be steak and chips with mushrooms, onion rings and peas on the side! Mmmm lovely! Its a meal we enjoy regularly at home and I always buy Tescos own branded Breaded Onion Rings to accompany my steak and chips.
~The Product~
Each Onion ring is around 2.5" in diameter with a hollow centre. It is basically a circular ring of onion which has been coated in breadcrumbs, then lightly fried. I am not a huge onion fan in general but I like these as you get a nice taste of the onion, but without it being too strong or overpowering. The breadcrumbs give a nice crunchy exterior to the onion ring when cooked properly and the two textures of the soft onion inside the crunchy coating really compliment each other well.
There are two ways in which these onion rings can be cooked. You can either oven...

Tesco Onion Rings
Advantages: Good value for money and taste good.
Disadvantages: High in calories
...Tesco Onion Rings (150g)
Since Christmas I have been trying to fight off the temptations of chocolate. I fear that this will not last much longer though, with Easter fast approaching! So, in my quest for a non-chocolate snack I couldn?t help notice the price of Tesco?s onion rings. I must admit that I do have a weakness for these and try not to buy them too often, but I couldn?t resist on this occasion. I notice that they are listed on Ciao as Onions Rongs, but there is nothing (w)rong with these!
