Really BIG lava lamp.
Advantages: Huge. Soothing. Good value.
Disadvantages: Takes forever to heat up.
...A lava lamp is, in principle, very simple. It consists of a lamp, which heats up a glass bulb filled with a waxy solid and a liquid. These cannot mix together and must have very similar densities. As the solid heats up, its density is lowered, so it rises. This cools it down and it then falls to the bottom of the lamp, creating a strangely soothing effect. In practice, making one yourself would involve messing about with expensive and perhaps flammable chemicals, so I wouldn't bother trying. It is much easier just to buy one yourself.
The Giant Grande Lava Lamp comes in two colours yellow and blue or yellow and violet. It is truly enormous at 27" and is guaranteed to be a focal point in your room. It is not called "giant" and "grande" for nothing!
My lamp is a yellow and blue model. Although the product description says "yellow...

Optoma EP706 Projector - I love dixons!
Advantages: The price, The picture quality and so forth
Disadvantages: Didnt work as well on old toshiba TV's
...- The wall opposite the fire place).
The projector produces almost NO sound when it is switched on, apart from the low hum of the internal fan and when the volume was turned up, This sound was driven out.
Overview of the projector:
DLP Display Technology For Great Viewing
Native SVGA Resolution (800x600)
2000:1 Contrast Ratio
Bright Display With 1800 ANSI Lumens
# Large Digital Keystone Correction Range
# 3000 Hours Of Lamp Life (I have yet to test this, but according to the information on the box, This is the case)
# Ultra Quiet 27db Operation (Like I said before, Barely a whisper)
# 1.9kg Weight (Because of this, I do NOT recommend fitting one of these to your ceiling. It works better when placed on a side table)
# Password Security (Restricts children from viewing certain content. Very useful)
# Great Connectivity...

Optoma HD720X
Advantages: Great picture, little rainbow effect, good looking projector.
Disadvantages: No internal speaker
...This is a really great projector, at a very impressive price (£529 on Play) - the cheapest WXGA I've seen! Many DLP projectors suffer from the "rainbow effect" but with this Optoma there is virtually no rainbow effect at all - this is due to the 4x speed colour wheel, which is faster than you would find in many other projectors. Out of the box, the picture is great. I found the yellows were maybe slightly muted but this can be adjusted by the on-screen menus. The actual projector looks very sleek - the black and silver case looks really classy - and it comes with all the inputs you could want, expect SCART, but don't worry - a SCART adapter comes in the box. Being HD ready, it's also got an HDMI port for your HD-DVD or Blu-ray. The remote is easy to use, and the buttons light up so you can see them in a darkened room. Thankfully...

Can you buy a full HD projector on the cheap?
Advantages: Cheap and bright full HD machine
Disadvantages: Poor colour reproduction
...control allowing proper integration with integrated control systems such as AMX or Crestron as well as a web interface for monitoring over a network. There is also a USB port so the projector remote can be used to control your computer for powerpoint presentations for example.
Picture quality
The first thing you notice is the resulution that the full HD DLP chip brings to the EP1080. Even system graphics like the Optoma logo and the input information are crisp and clear. Plug in a laptop into the machine and you can put the resolution right up to 1080p and see full HD goodness from the internet such as BBC iplayer or Youtube HD. To get the best out of this machine you really need to connect a full HD source such as a Blue Ray player into the HDMI port and here you really enjoy the benefits of full high definition projection...

The Old Lamp
Advantages: Make you think
Disadvantages: Not sure
...Outside the lamp was swinging, a breeze had forced it so.
But also came a squeaking, through me it would go.
The wind becoming fierce now, it?s driving me insane.
My head would never stand it, this noise would not refrain.
This lamp was kind of bashing, it now should surely break.
But it continued onward, please stop for heavens sake.
The gale whisked dust around us, a whirlwind here bestow.
The lamp was still relentless, swinging to and fro.
Suddenly the wind was calm, its strength just passed away.
Now my head was pounding, a headache came my way.
The wind began to hush then, but left me with a frown.
Ill have to take it off that hook, for now I must lie down.
Next day there came a mission, to stop this awful squeak.
So out came the ladders, aloft I took a peek.
A bird had nested safely, with chicks she had to feed...

I LOVE LAMP!
Advantages: Hilarious, quotable script and great performances
Disadvantages: A bit weird and silly for some
...that really makes this stand out. The film starts off as a standard 70s pastiche with some nice one-liners, but by the end it's an all-out comedy which rivals any in terms of the jokes-to-laughs ratio - a very important factor.
The funniest character is not actually Burgundy, but in fact the scene stealing Steve Carell as Brick, the weather guy. People like him because he's "polite and rarely late", and he comes out with some of the funniest and most random lines, such as "I ate a big red candle", "I love lamp" and "Where'd you get those suits, the toilet store?". Carell is one of my favourite comic actors, and he's without doubt the best thing about this film.
The rest of the cast are great too - Will Ferrell is very funny, and really suits this role, surely because he wrote it for himself. He's a whole lot better in this than in...

Bulbs - No - Lamps ..
Advantages: Better than normal
Disadvantages: More expensive & 110 volt.
...OK this is a review on a light bulb! "How do you write more than a sentence"? I hear you ask, "Not a clue" says I. Although there are some things you probably don''t know about them.
Firstly, the bulbs are more properly called lamps, bulbs are the things that grow in the garden.
Secondly, the lamps that are used here are designed to be used in a harsh environment than usual, they are made to stand a lot of abuse, vibration, shocks, and extremes of temperature. They cost a little more, but are designed not to fail as easy as ordinary lamps.
These lamps are always "Pearl" ones, not clear that could dazzle. They are made of slightly thicker glass than household ones, and the filaments are able to withstand a little more abuse.
They are actually called "Rough service lamps". They are marketed under the brand name "Britelight...

Lighting the LAMP
Advantages: dead good
Disadvantages: you'll turn into a geek
...exception being that there is again no charge for MySQL.
When you shove all this stuff together you get something called a “LAMP” (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). LAMP servers are very quickly becoming the platform of choice for web development, particularly here in Europe, with the result that the folks at Microsoft and Sun are, quite justifiably, shitting themselves. Because there are no license fees, almost all web teaching in universities and colleges around the world also tends to be based upon LAMP so the kids are graduating “ready trained” in the technology. As a result they are reluctant to embrace the more costly and slower ASP and J2EE technologies. In particular, we have recently seen an explosion of talented PHP designers and programmers coming out of the former Eastern Block countries. What’s nice...

Portable home cinema packs a punch
Advantages: Great picture and sound. Portable. Comes with carry case. Reasonable price. Vertical keystone
Disadvantages: Lacks useful connection leads, small amount of 'arcing'. No Horizontal keystone.
...to the shop, as the power cable didn't connect securely to the unit, causing it to spark. The shop replaced the unit for me and I haven't had any problems since.
***Lamps***
Manufacturer suggests it has 2,000 hours of lamp life.
Replacement lamps cost about £99 (price found at projectorpoint.co.uk) which isn't bad compared to many other projector lamps that exceed £200 in price.
***Compatibility***
Additional leads and connections (NOT SUPPLIED) let you hook up a PC, set-top box or games console. Optoma provides a VGA to RGB Scart adaptor in the box, this lets you hook up your PC, but doesn't include a sound cable. However, the unit does have a separate audio out that allows you to connect an external sound system.
Computer Compatibility
SXGA, XGA, SVGA, 15 Pin D-Sub (VGA type)
