Essential Equipment For the Great Outdoors!

Advantages: Lots of detailed information
Disadvantages: Expensive, rather large when fully opened up

...When I look back to my early childhood it would seem that not long after I had learned to read and write that I had mastered the skill of map reading. Most weekends my Parents would take my Brother and myself up onto the Moors and I was always the one that was in charge of the map and the compass. My obsession with maps is without a doubt one of the things that has instilled within me a passion for the great outdoors and there are few tools more essential when taking to the mountains than a good quality map. The Landranger series of maps, produced by the Ordnance Survey, quickly became my bible and the shelves on my bedroom wall were quickly filled with more and more of the distinctive pink coloured maps as I persuaded my Dad to buy more and more. There are actually 204 different maps within the Landranger series, which when put...

Nivea firming lotion - why I would recommend it

Advantages: hmm prehaps you should see my not so saggy skin !
Disadvantages: None that I have found so far

...I brought this product after I had my baby because I had really saggy skin which was also quite stretched. I used it on my stretched skin - top of legs and tummy, as I looked (unfortunately) like a ordnance survey map, within 3 weeks I noticed that my skin looked firmer, tighter and younger. I enjoy swimming, but felt uncomfortable due to my stretch marks from pregnancy. I had been avoiding going till I started using Nivea firming lotion, it gave me the confidence to feel proud again of my body. I have never before used this kind of product, but the results that I achieved with Nivea firming lotion was well worth it. I also found it quite reasonably priced and I personally recommend it to my pregnant friends and even my older relatives....

The Beauty Of Wiltshires White horses

Advantages: All of these sites are steeped in history
Disadvantages: None at all

...Study Group removed the weeds and grass from the white surface and redefined some edging in 2002. The horse has also been lit up a few times in past year, a group of dedicated people placed hundreds of tea lights around the edge of the horse on the night of a Winter Solstice, by all accounts the event was a sight to behold. The Ordnance Survey Grid Reference for Alton Barnes is SU 106 637. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now we move on to the Broad Town white Horse. The village of Broad Town is South of Wooton Bassett, on the Marlborough road, the horse itself sits in a dip to the North East of the village. Records state that the horse was on what used to be farmland. In 1864 the farmer William Simmonds cut the horse, fully intending to make it larger in future years. But William was...

Another Oasis In An Industrial Heartland!

Advantages: Very Tranquil, Lots Of Wildlife
Disadvantages: Very Close To Indusrtial And Residential Areas

...from junction 33 of the M1 Motorway. From here take the A630, known locally as the Sheffield Parkway, and leave at the first exit as soon as you see a large Morrison's Supermarket. From here Catcliffe Village is approximately one mile and clearly sign-posted. From Catcliffe Village take the B6067 sign-posted Treeton. Approximately 200 metres along the B6067 there is a lay-by on the right hand side of the road. This parking area overlooks the main body of Water and this is the only Parking place in the area. Access to the whole area is completely free and there is a footpath which goes all the way around the reserve in a circular route, which will bring you back to the car park, where you will have more than likely set out from. The Ordnance Survey grid reference is SK 425 881 THE HISTORY Catcliffe Flash occupies a site...

Fall for a day by the lake

Advantages: An inexpensive day out that suits all the family
Disadvantages: Quite hilly

...Lakeside BY ROAD Fell Foot is at the extreme south end of Lake Windermere on east shore, entrance from A592 there are plenty of brown leisure signs that show the way. BT TRAIN There is a station at Grange-over-Sands (6 miles) and at Windermere (8 miles) WALKING The Ordnance survey reference is 96/97:SD381869 We have two ways of visiting Fell Foot - by car or - our favourite way - we go to the railway station at Haverthwaite and get the steam train to Lakeside and then take the ferry over to the park. It makes a really lovely day out. ~WHEN IS IT OPEN~ Park All year 9-5 Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa Su Tea-room 14 Feb-1 Nov 09 11-5 Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa Su Shop 28 Feb-1 Nov 09 11-5 Mo Tu We Th Fr Sa Su Site closed 25/26 December. The three wiremen of Baghdad

Advantages: An intense gripping film
Disadvantages: Can make you a bit edgy and nervous

.... The three man EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team at Fort Victory have lost their leader to a fireball explosion and the new Staff Sergeant, William James (Jeremy Renner), has arrived to replace him. Still mourning the loss of their friend the other two men find it difficult to accept James as the new leader but somehow this isn't the only reason. They are freaked out by his devil may dare leadership strategy. They are not sure whether James is super brave or just putting on a big bravado act. Whatever the deal is he certainly seems to breeze through life ignoring the most basic of safety measures. Or perhaps he has refined his life-saving skills to such precision that he knows exactly what can save him and ignores everything else because it only gives an illusion of being a life saver. This recklessly irresponsible attitude puts not just...

Cartophilia or Mad About Maps.

Advantages: Comprehensive coverage.
Disadvantages: Er! Let me think....

...Well, you can call me a geek, anorak or nerd but I don`t mind admitting that I am mad about maps! Before a visit, during a visit or after a visit, you can find me absorbed in these multi-coloured sheets of paper, studying and reading them like a book. Although I have thousands already, I always welcome one brought home for me from someone`s holiday or trip and if I`m going myself, the first item on my list is always…MAPS! So call me an anorak then! Almost every house will have maps of some description, be they Ordnance Survey , Michelin, Collins or A-Z. Most of us that travel a lot by car will have lots of them, stuffed into glove or door pockets or maybe just chucked carelessly onto the back seat. Whatever the publishers, at some time or another they are indispensable. Geographers` A-Z Company produce some...

Quiet Country Walks.

Advantages: Peace and Quiet.
Disadvantages: Means Exercise.

...or the environment. There is a programme of events displayed at the visitors centre. There are a number of circular walks starting from the visitors centre, most about 5 miles in length. These routes are nearly all “off road”, but do take in some of the beautiful villages of this area. (The chance to visit some very inviting public houses). One village of particular interest in Old Teversal which has connections with Lord Carnarvon of Tutankhamun fame and D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover”. The Ordnance Survey maps covering the trails network are Landranger 120 and Pathfinder 779. If you fancy a quiet gentle stroll through some beautiful countryside then this is the place for you. It is very tranquil and very relaxing....

There's Summit about it

Advantages: Larger Memory, Digital Compass, Altimeter
Disadvantages: Battery life.

...! So far, then, the Summit does everything the base eTrex can do and a few things more which make it much more useful for a hill walker/rambler type person. What the unit DOESN'T do is provide base-maps that you can use to navigate around unfamiliar territory. The Summit does have a map page, but all you will find on it are waypoints that you have marked and the track showing where you have been. It is very much a case of only getting out what you put in. Indeed it is the lack of base-map information that keeps the cost of the unit so low while still providing all the navigation features of the more expensive models. Where the Summit really does come into it's own is when it is used in conjunction with some mapping software on a PC (such as the excellent Memory-Map navigator). This allows you to create your own routes from Ordnance Survey...

The Granddaddy of the Daleks

Advantages: Beautifully written, exciting plot twists, a remarkable feeling of realness
Disadvantages: The plot may be too slow for some, the history is quite distant now

...(what if aliens invaded and behaved to the British the way the British had behaved to other countries in their Empire) and melding it to the structure of these xenophobic penny dreadfuls, HG Wells came up a very memorable and novel idea. Despite the tremendous suspension of disbelief required to envisage creatures from Mars invading in giant armoured tripods, Wells makes this a lot easier for the reader by setting his invasion in a "true" setting - certainly, far more realistic than many of the settings of the other, more-earth-bound invasion fantasies of the time. Wells places his invasion firmly in the Home Counties. Armed with an Ordnance Survey map of Woking, and his newly learned skill of cycling, Wells began writing the Martian's advance through his home town (Wells lived in Woking for eighteen months in the mid-1890s) and along...
