Quality Art At The Musee d'Orsay

Advantages: Art, cool design, plenty to look at
Disadvantages: Pricey, hard to navigate

...The Musee d'Orsay used to be the Gare d'Orsay, it has been converted from an old railway station into an art gallery. The building itself is on Rue Bellechasse and from the outside looks like an old railway station, of course many of the windows are now covered and the entrances closed. Inside is a different story as a mix of ideas and designs have transformed the interior into an interesting place to display art. You can expect to queue for a good half hour to get in but it is well worth it. If you are aged 18-25 it costs 33 francs and otherwise it will cost you 45 francs, £4.50, which makes it one of the more expensive attractions on offer. What do you get for your money? Well in this case you get access to some of the most famous art in the world, including paintings by Cezanne, Degas, Van Gogh, Renoir, Monet, Pisarro and Sisley...

Orsay Museum is an exceptional experience

Advantages: Great art collection, warm admosphere, special cultural services
Disadvantages: In summer can be crowd

...This was a helpful review of Orsay Museum. Orsay is one of my favorite Museums in Paris. I'll share with you my ideas about Orsay. Personally I was impressed with: 1) The excellent use of spaces and lighting, you really are comfortable looking to the paintings, sculptures, decorative arts. 2) The architectural solutions, to transform a building with one functionality in another with totally different requirements, are brilliant. The best example is using the benefit of the natural overhead lighting 3) The Book Shop has a big collection of exceptional value 4) The cafeteria has very good food with acceptable prices, everything is done to make you comfortable 5) The Cultural Services are exceptional. They were created to relate to the public, to interact with the public, they introduce modern technology and obtain the maximum...

'Tis an Art... museum! (Sorry)

Advantages: Hundreds of famous works of art.
Disadvantages: Sensory overload.

...If you enjoy visiting art museums, Paris really is the place to go to. In the last 20 years or so, Paris museums re-organised their collections and the musée d'Orsay became the receptacle for art dated between 1848 and 1914. ~The Gare d'Orsay~ ********************** The building that houses the collection used to be a train station and hotel, which due to its proximity to the Louvre needed to be built sympathetically. Its inauguration in 1900 revealed a very fine building where the stone façade hid the metal structure inside. At the time, the painter Edouard Detaille wrote ""The station is superb and looks like a Palais des beaux-arts...". Little did he know that he was writing a prophesy? After 1939, the progressive electrification of the railroads meant that the platforms were now too short to accommodate the new, longer...

Review of Musee D'Orsay

If you love the Impressionists......

Advantages: The best range of fine arts from 1848 to the 1st. World War
Disadvantages: So much to see and take in.

...What has been said in the other 2 reviews is all true. Do remember that like many French museums the Musee d`Orsay is not open on a Monday. If you want to avoid queues, then visit in winter. We visited in January and waited 10 minutes, or better still buy a museum pass from the Tourist Ofice, some hotels can help here. These passes allow you to jump the queue as you have pre-bought your ticket. Of course you can always get there before 9.30 when they open. Once inside marvel at the interior. It is an old station but what a magnificent one it must have been. Old films come to mind. The glass dome in the centre gives the place a wonderful natural light. Plan whether to start at the bottom where the sculptures are and surrounding in rooms and areas are the Pre-Impressionists or go to the top (5th. level) and see the Impressionists...

Review of Musee D'Orsay

It's A Funny / Weird Thing

Advantages: Entertaining, funny
Disadvantages: Some scenes just don't work - at all.

...an argument right in front of a statue of "the ancient Aztec god of sorcery". The following morning they each wake up in the other's body, much to their mutual disgust. Initially, they set out to sabotage each other's lives: Nell (in Woody's body) by adopting a "dorky" look and breaking up with Woody's tarty girlfriend Breanne (a superbly trashy Brooke D'Orsay); and Woody (in Nell's body), by dressing provocatively and trying to get Nell to lose her virginity. Eventually, however, with Nell's Yale interview and Woody's make or brake football game approaching, they both agree to put their differences aside and try not to derail each other's plans for the future. I am a big fan of body swap comedies, and I really enjoyed this one. So much so that I went to see it twice in the cinema. It's not a laugh out loud film, however...

Tate Modern-The World's Largest

Advantages: Biggest gallery of modern art in the world
Disadvantages: Huge

...renaissance of the cultural milieu in this historic city and nowhere is this better emphasized than at the remarkable Tate Modern at Bankside. The world's largest gallery of modern art, Tate Modern is housed in the old Bankside power station which had actually been in "mothballs" since the 1980's. It was the creation of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott - who was well known as the designer of Britain's red telephone box - and this new sister to the existing Tate Gallery was designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron to be accessible from all four sides. They employed a dramatic use of glass and there are fabulous views of the City of London. The place is linked to St. Paul's Cathedral by a new Millennium footbridge, designed by Norman Foster. Developed at a cost of 134 million pounds the Tate Modern is already being compared to the Musee d'Orsay...

BATTLESHIT'S

Advantages: hilarious film
Disadvantages: story line is a little thin and predictable

..., but there were quite a few other actors and actresses in the film who also made a few short appearances. Neil Patrick Harris played a part in the film and his character was rather weird but in a rather funny comedic way. I liked the part he played in the film because some of the funnies scenes in the film were ones which he was a part of. There are a few other odd and weird characters in the film whom are all equally funny ( some more than others), Freakshow (Christopher Meloni), Clarissa (Brooke D'Orsay) and Christie (Kate Kelton) whom both appear in a very amusing toilet humour scene where they play a game of BattleShits. Together, it is very disgusting but again really funny. As for special effects this film had a few of them such as Freakshow's make up and the evil Racoon, the special effects were really good if not a little...

Paris Trip

Advantages: Great fun, Chance to brush up on your language skills as well as learn about the theatre
Disadvantages: None

...the theatre I had ever seen. After a day of drama, we neeed to do something a bit more 'touristy'. On a Sunday morning we headed into Paris for a day of sight seeing. We went up the Eiffel Tower and took a boat cruise down the Seine, past the famous bridges of the city, the Louvre art gallery, the Muse D'Orsay, Notre Dame and some of the most elite area of the city. Our coach driver later braved the Arc de Triumph and it's treacherous roundabout to take us to the Champes Elysees, where we stopped for lunch and an hour break to sample it's shops and sights. By the end of the break, people wre arriving at the meeting place with all sorts of things, including trainers! We parked the coach in the Louvre car parks and walked through the museum courtyards, along the river bank (where it was much warmer than the rest of the frosty city) and to...

Cheap lowbrow tour in a Day!

Advantages: Fun, makes you want to go back
Disadvantages: Can be tiring, still quite a lot of walking

...Bateaux Parisiens have their shore side pontoons and ticket office. A Short River Tour Eleven Euros will buy you a seat on the hour long commentated river tour. This really is excellent values for money. As you glide along the multi-lingual handsets deliver a commentary, identifying the buildings, giving snippets of interest, history and music which you can relate to what you are cruising past. The magnificence of the Alexandre Bridge, Louvre, Museum d?Orsay and Notre Dame unfold before you. The boats themselves are glass covered, so in more inclement weather you can still shelter from the elements whilst still enjoying the gentle and interesting tour. We were lucky it was a balmy spring afternoon, so we were able to sit outside enjoying the sunshine, together with the sounds and smells of this busy city. Something seen from the boat...

Review of Getting around in Paris

The Perfect Place for a Weekend Break

Advantages: Amazing art, fabulous food and serious shopping all in a beautiful city.
Disadvantages: Too much to see in one weekend.

...I love Paris, I love the art, I love the food, I love the culture, the shopping, the people watching and the nightlife. Each time I go to Paris I try to see a different area in a bit more depth. On a visit to Paris most people will try to see the most famous sights such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur and Montmartre and the Louvre so omitting these popular attractions I will tell you some of my favourite places in Paris which include Musee d’ Orsay, the Tuileries gardens, forum des Halles, Place des Vosges and above all Versailles which I have written about in detail in one of my earlier opinions (the 6th op I think if you are interested). Top of my list for art is the Musee d' Orsay which houses the famous collection of impressionist paintings. It is wonderful to be able to view the familiar paintings in real...
