Advantages: Good base for exploring, good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
Disadvantages: Not as pretty as some other places. Building work is a problem at the moment.

...the evenings we opted for a snack in Ostende ~ there is plenty of choice. We had either bratwurst, frites and mayonnaise, or some seafood from the stalls that line the pavement near the harbour (wonderful trays of mixed shellfish). These were very reasonably priced (two Euros for a huge bratwurst!) and the fritte shop had an area where you could eat in (and toilets too). There are lots of other restaurants if you wanted a larger meal (Chinese restaurants, pizza places and bars serving mussels and other Belgium dishes), but we just needed a snack. ~~~TRANSPORT. Belgium trains and trams are great and very novel for the British traveler ~ they actually run on time!!! On our first evening we got a tram along the coast to the next resort up the coast (De Haan) for a drink in a bar that was recommended to us. A return cost us just over 3 Euros...

Hoverspeed also do some good deals where you can stay at the likes of the Holiday Inn or the Tulip Inn Bero Ostend is renowned for the quality of its restaurants,especially its seafood eateries, and my five meals were all first rate. The moules (mussels) and frittes (chips)are a Belgian speciality, so too is the fish soup and the beefsteak and frittes is another good choice. You will probably be surprised at the prices - you can get a good steak and chips for about eight pounds and my moules and frittes cost some...

Hotel Ostend, Ostend, Belgium

Advantages: Very centrally placed
Disadvantages: Noisy side street!!!

...I've just returned from a 7 day holiday with WA Shearings (see my other reviews for opinions on Shearings) staying at the Hotel Ostend. We stayed for 6 nights on a half board basis (July 30th- Aug 5th). The hotel has a website: http://www.hotelostend.be/ For anyone travelling independently, you can check and book reservations online. The website also has a photo- guided tour of the hotel. The hotel is quite centrally placed. It's pretty much over the road from the beach (about 50m away.....but down a side street so you can't see the sea!) near to the marina. I'd say it was a medium sized hotel offering 122 en-suite rooms (some family rooms too) with a fairly large restaurant, a small bar (called the Safari bar and decorated in rather fetching tiger and zebra print!) It also has a children's room next to the bar which has a bouncy...

Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for.
Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.

The Belgian beauty-Ostend

Advantages: Good quality, cheap shops
Disadvantages: Absolutely none

...Having visited Ostend on several different occasions (mostly for day trips) I am in love with the place! Oostende as the locals call it is a town known mainly for it?s fish market along the seafront although this isn?t the only reason to visit. It has beautiful clean beaches, nice shops and seriously reasonable prices. Ostend is only a 2 hour trip from Dover on the hoverspeed seacat and at a cost of around £10 for a day return ticket (you can easily save that in duty free shop onboard) is well within reach of some of the tightest budgets, especially when you consider that you can save £16 on 200 british cigarettes there. When you arrive at the port there is always a warm welcome with most people speaking English and life suddenly slows down?nobody hurries in Ostend, there is very little traffic through the town and most people prefer...

...The Restaurant is a TV programme shown on BBC 2 on Thursday nights! The show is a reality TV show and is similar to something like the Apprentice but a food version. This show is obviously based on the concept and success of many other TV shows like the Apprentice, food shows like Masterchef and all the other shows like Dragon`s Den, X Factor e.t.c The idea of the show is for world famous chef Raymond Blanc to find a couple to help him run a restaurant and the couples are gradually knocked out week by week until they have the winning couple. It is in its third season and seems to have got a bit worse. I still enjoy it but felt it used to be more exciting and interesting. Rick Stein is an English chef, restauranter and television presenter. He now specialises in fish cookery. He opened his first restaurant in Padstow in 1974 and now runs quite a few businesses in the town including a cake shop, cookery school and a fish and chip shop. The Seafood Restaurant is his upper class restaurant in the town and is known for it's fabulous fish. It really is in the best location for fish. Padstow is a historic fishing port and so receives fresh fish every day. ...On the first night of our recent visit to York we ventured out to find somewhere to eat as the hotel was a tad expensive for us commoners! When we entered the city walls we asked the first people we met where the best area/restaurant was to eat. Both of them immediately answered Akbars, an Asian restaurant, which luckily was just around the corner on George Hudson Street. They also gave us options for Chinese and Mexican food but both of them were adamant that Akbars was the best. We walked round to the restaurant and had a look at the menu outside the front door. As I'm a vegetarian I need to ensure that any restaurant I visit is going to have a good selection of meals for me to choose from and not just one or two veggie options.
