My english essay on Othello.
Advantages: Great ethical quality to it.
Disadvantages: People may struggle with its old language.
...Below is the english essay I wrote on the Shakespeare play Othello, this is one of my better works and I recieved a very high mark for my efforts. Although it does not cover the whole play it does answer the question set and anlayses the play in detail.
Everything we need to know about Othello can be found in Act 1 Scene 3 by analysing the scene carefully to show how it prepares us for the rest of the play. What issues are raised in this scene? How does Shakespeare make this scene dramatic?
Othello is a play written by William Shakespeare that he wrote between the years 1601 and 1605. It was written between his two plays Measure for Measure and Macbeth, which was another tragedy similar to Othello. Because two tragedies being written simultaneously some may say this had something to do with Shakespeare?s mentality during the years...

racism and sexism in othello
Advantages: interesting, thought provoking
Disadvantages: complicated language!
...the characters anger; for example, Iagos racism towards Othello is because he is angry with Othello for giving Cassio the job as lieutenant. Brabantios racism towards Othello is based on his anger regarding Desdemona?s marriage to Othello.
Many of the characters feel that Desdemona should not be with Othello and that he is inferior because of his colour. This is likely to represent the attitudes of a great deal of people at the time the play was written as even the Queen of England was racist as at one point she expressed her discontent at the great numbers of ?Negars and blackamoors which are crept into the realm?. Therefore many people in the audience may have agreed with the racism shown by Iago, Brabantio, Roderigo and Emilia and to an audience in Shakespeare?s day, the notion of a black man of high rank in a European army, married to a white...

Shakespeare's use of the word honest in Othello
Advantages: The plot keeps you hooked
Disadvantages: There are a few irregularities
...'Othello' by William Shakespeare is often described as on of his 'problem plays', a 'domestic tragedy' that does not rank in the same league as the likes of 'Macbeth' or 'Hamlet'. I beg to differ. 'Othello' offers audiences the most interesting of all Shakespeare's creations - Iago, the epitome of all malcontents.
Iago is singularly responsible for Othello's downfall and Desdemona's death. Granted, there are times when Will conveniently uses coinincidence to aid Iago's manipulative plot, but whoever said life wasn't made up of fascinating coincidences? The key to Iago's success in the play is directly linked to Shakespeare's use of one word - HONEST.
At the time Shakespeare was writing the meaning of the word honest was shifting. In its original context, honest meant something along the lines of 'the art of taking advantage...

Hamlet by William Shakespeare:Wonderful Pyschological Analysis
Advantages: Brillant insight of the human mind!! Easily transposed in modern context
Disadvantages: Might be difficult to read
...Hamlet remains the major psychological work of Shakespeare. In fact, a psychoanalyst Shakespearian fan will rejoice over the marvelous display of Freudian and Lacan theories, as well as the deep insights into the dark thoughts and contemplations which secretly arise even within the best of us.
I personally believe that the character of Hamlet is the perfect depiction of a brilliantly troubled mind: ?To Be or Not to Be? have become legendary words. In fact, this dilemma portrayed by Shakespeare is not only found all throughout, but readers/audiences of the play will be marveled as they transpose these words into their everyday lives. The historical To Be or Not to Be within the context of murder does echo the dilemma of the modern housewife: Spaghetti or not for dinner tonight? That?s only one petty example but avid readers will soon...

Othello - shakespeare's best work?
Advantages: easy to read - enjoyable
Disadvantages: there aren't any!!!
...As an A-Level English Literature student I love reading almost all books but I must admit that even Shakespeare is a bit of an exception.. I have read The Tempest, Midsumer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, MacBeth, Hamlet and Measure for Measure and found them all pretty boring and pointless to me and today's society. But Othello is different!
Othello, a black army General, falls in love with Desdemona, a young white girl with high status in Venetian society. Their relationship is seen as disgusting by her father and he disowns his daughter.
Throughout the play Iago a Machivellian character who wants to destory everyhting Othello has, over a missed promotion plots against him. Iago cleverly weaves his web of deceit and manages to some how fool everyone even his own wife who unwittingly helps out in Iago's plans.
Eventually...

Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare
Advantages: great story
Disadvantages: none
...Romeo and Juliet was written in 1595 by William Shakespeare as a play. It is classed as a tragic play, therefore involves a protagonist that has a peak in his or her life involving good fortune, but then on after good fortune turns quickly into bad, ending up in sadness and misfortune for the protagonist. All tragedies follow the same pattern, only changing the peak point and the speed of good fortune going bad. When mentioned, Shakespeare is often thought to be associated with romance and beautiful imagery, which in some cases is true, but this romance is a needle in a haystack amongst the violent, sexual, crude and malicious imagery. This is a trick that is used to make the romance stand out more, Romeo and Juliet is a very famous piece of Shakespeare's work, but is often thought to be extremely romantic and 'lovey-dovey', however...

Othello - a must read/see for all play lovers
Advantages: Shakespeare and his style and the plot of the play
Disadvantages: Not as good to be read as it is a play!
...extremely distraught by this occurrance. Iago, who is the 'villian' in the play, is an extremely and manipulative character. Shakespeare uses Iago to bring out the best writing and 'acting' (within the play as a character) that he can. Iago makes himself out as 'honest' - there is no count as to how many times people call him this throughout the play! People trust and honour Iago as if he were their true friend, yet his soliliquoys reveal to the audience his true colours and intentions.
Iago uses techniques that draw people into his schemes without them realising. He, for example, makes Othello believe that his wife, Desdemona, has been unfaithful to him with Othello's captain, Cassio. The siginificance of a certain handkerchief is also a symbol that needs to be explored!
In his scheming and plotting, Iago manages to get everyone on his...

Othello it's not reversi
Advantages: good story, great characters
Disadvantages: too short
...Othello is a play by the World-renowned 16th century English playwright William Shakespeare. He is known chiefly for his excellent storylines within the confines of three distinct styles: - comedies, tragedies and histories, and for his use of blank verse for dialogue. It is a tragedy and is written in both verse and prose.
The story begins in Venice, where Desdemona's (Othello's wife) father, Brabantio, is notified of Othello and Desdemona's marriage. Brabantio is livid and tries to disprove it, however it is revealed that Othello won her respectably and they are left alone. Othello and Desdemona then travel to Cyprus where he is leading the Venetian forces as General. Iago, the trusted Ancient of Othello's, angry about having been beaten to a promotion by the honourable Cassio sets about causing Othello's downfall. Iago sees...

Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare
Advantages: Comical to some degree
Disadvantages: I'm not sure
...The play Much Ado About Nothing was written between 1598-1599. It is a comical play and the title basically implies "All this drama? and no good came from it." Shakespear cleverly creates very different couples and entwines them and their story's thoughout the play creating comedy.
Throughout the play Much Ado About Nothing, love is a continuous theme but depending on which character, the views on love and marriage change. Hero and Claudio are lovers at first sight. Their love is a shallow because it was based on physical attraction and possibly wealth. Beatrice and Benedick, on the other hand were enemies at first sight. They both were head-strong and quick witted people but secretly enjoyed their sharp banter. Both couples at the end of the play finally show their true feelings in one way or another.
Other characters include...

Black and white is not always so simple
Advantages: A great read with an excellent, enthralling storyline.
Disadvantages: Some of the Shakespearean language may get you a bit confused.
...When I started 4th Year at high school we were told we would be reading William Shakespeare's "Othello". To start with we were all thinking that it would be another boring old piece of literature but when we started reading, it turned out to be more original than Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet. I started to thouroughly enjoy it, and even though it was a bit of a drag to have to do it again recently in 5th Year, it brought back to my mind the significance of nearly every scene of the play.
One of the things I will not do in this review is give the plot away - my English teacher unfortunately decided to tell us almost every detail of the play before we even started it. I suppose this was to help us through the masses of Shakespearean phrases such as "thou art" and "mine eyes doth decieve me" and to stop us missing the important points...
