...and it really is massive. Danau Toba is so vast that it's central island alone is the size of Singapore. It's an utterly beautiful and serene place, where days just drift by in a mix of swimming, canoeing, shopping, generally hanging out and chatting. Its one of the easiest places to do nothing that I've ever been. If it's a bit touristy for you (it's been a backpacker hangout since the 60's) then you could always try the nearby Danau Maninjau (Danau means lake in Indonesian) - if possible even more laid back. I spent a week there doing nothing but swimming and playing cards and drinking beer, for next to no money. A tip worth knowing is that if you're only intending to visit Toba, you can fly into Medan which has an international airport - it's not easy but it's possible. And it's preferable to trekking overland from Jakarta, a bus...

Advantages: Wonderful for kids

The stories are standard Gerry Anderson and the obvious connections with his other series Captain Scarlet And The Mysterons, Thunderbirds, fireball Xl5, Stingray, Joe 90 etc.. are clearly seen. The animation even today will be loved by kids, of all ages ahem. The colour and crispness qualities of the episodes are perfect. ...I've always known my dad liked FM but I'd never listened to much of their music. I decided to steal a few of my dads CDs to check them out and see if they were worth all the hype. And to my surprise they actually were. Steve Overlands voice was aboslutely amazing, it reminded me of a mild Steve Perry (Journey) and that was definately my kind of thing. His voice is a bit huskier and has a different tone that just sounds so smooth. The one thing I really dig about their music is the originality. Everything sounds really experimental, like they've had a play around in the studio to create a totally different sound. The guitar is always spot on, at a fast pace it sounds incredible and you find it hard to imagine how someone could keep up playing at that speed. Gorgeous scenery, friendly people and a relaxing alternative to mainstream tourism in Australia

Advantages: wilderness, friendly, relaxing, adventure, 'non-touristy', quiet
Disadvantages: distance, 'non-touristy', quiet

...as England. Some 'don't miss' sights include Wineglass Bay (only accessible by an hour's hike but definately worth it), Cradle Mountain (short walks and luxury accomodation for those who desire it or long walks - including the famous Overland Track and rugged mountain huts for the more hardy), Salamanca Market on Saturdays in Hobart - one of Australia's largest open air markets as as much loved by the locals as the tourists, and any of the many wildlife parks where you can feed free-roaming kangaroos and wallabies, cuddle koalas and see the real Tasmanian Devils (look but don't touch these guys!)....

Would you ride the Orient Express?

Advantages: Beautiful to watch, wonderfully acted...and you'll never guess who did it!
Disadvantages: Albert Finney's rather strange moustache

Review of Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express (DVD)

Cod piece anyone? .

Advantages: Freshly frozen, decent fish pieces in a nice coating.
Disadvantages: Frozen fish is not quite as good as fresh.

...tasted, the coating equally as good, and the fish is white all the way through, as it should be. The subtle smell is just right, and the size of the fingers is not too big for kids mouths. Cooking, this is up to you, fry them, grille them, or throw them in the oven on a baking tray. They go well with so many other foods, too many to list. They are great for teaching kids (and students) how to cook. They do have a website, see here:- www.birdseye.co.uk So treat yourself & the kids to some good old Captain Birds Eye Cod Fish Fingers from Grimsby (actually most fish arrives in Grimsby overland from places like Aberdeen) I still recommend them! ...a brief overland dash on his own (he left Vincent in the sewer) Richard reaches Rihanna's position (she's not sat waiting for him? What gives?). After the rescue they both run across the city (Oxnard, it said so on the dumpster!) and we have their attempt to find a stick shift (manual gearbox to the non Americans) car which they don't do anyway. We also get some background history on Rihanna. Of course the car stalls as they reverse, allowing some infected to get close and for Richard to go Postal on them. She takes off without him leaving him in what seems like certain death until she saves him. Oh, and clearly there was no budget for a stuntman to be run over, the dummy was a very weak effect there. Even though she's been told to drive fast they seem to cruise at about 2 miles an hour so we can ride along as they converse, but they still...

Arebbusch Travel Lodge

Advantages: Ideal base in Windhoek, very easy access to the centre of town, lovely chalets and friendly service. Campsites can be dusty, but plenty of shade.
Disadvantages: Busy road outside the gates, but you can't have everything!

...dusty, but this is what you expect given they are on the banks of the river. There are plenty of trees, the only annoyance is the slight marring of noise from the road. Overlanders do camp here (I was one once!), so if you're not akin to their way of life, ask to be in a more secluded spot! The birdlife is prolific, literally you will wake up to the sounds and sights from arms length in your tent, be prepared for the odd lizard also, even a warthog showed up for the melee! This is a convenient, safe and clean stopover for anyone wanting to sample Windhoek. It will be my first port of call when I return to the capital....

Opodo - avoid like the plague

...READ THIS - Very important . I would never use opodo again after the trouble I had after booking a flight with them. I booked a flight from London to Kathmandu three months before travelling. I used an internet comparison site and the cheapest company for the flight I booked wasn't actually Opodo but I booked through Opodo because I (wrongly) trusted them. The day before I was due to travel they rang me up and said my flight had been cancelled (!!!). They said the only thing I could do was take a refund and try and find another flight. Obviously there were no other flights or not for less than £2000 anyway and they gave me no help finding another flight. I spent hours trying to find a flight and in the end had to buy one to Calcutta 3 days later and would have had to make my way overland to Kathmandu. Not ideal since I was supposed to...
