Whitby's wonderful harbour

Advantages: Lots of history, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: Some areas are not suitable for disabled visitors

...Whitby is a small fishing town in the north east of England and in my opinion it is one of the most beautiful picturesque seaside locations in this part of England. The town itself has a real old worldly feel to it with its bustling narrow streets and each week thousands of visitors descend on the town to soak up its charm. At the heart of Whitby is its harbour and without this harbour there is no doubt that Whitby would not be the wonderful place that we find today. The town grew up along the two opposite banks of the River Esk, which is spanned by a swing bridge that was constructed in 1908. It is however known that a bridge has spanned this river since medieval times, whilst the town itself predates that by a further thousand years or more. Whitby's most famous landmark, its abbey was built in the year 657AD. Today, Whitby...

The Sydney Harbour Bridge

Advantages: Read Opp
Disadvantages: Read Opp

...My next review is on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which is perhaps one of the most iconic monuments in Sydney, if not the whole of Australia. The Bridge is the main thing that stands out when you first arrive in Sydney, its like their gateway into and out of the City, and with its sheer size, its something that people should take the time to look at up close and personal. History: The bridge has a long history, original plans to create the bridge started in the late 1890?s however construction didn?t actually start until the mid 1920?s. The bridge?s total length is a mammoth 1149 metres (3,770 ft), and according to the World Records book the bridge has the tallest arch steel frame measuring 134 meters (429.6 ft) The bridge is accessible by many modes on transport which include, train, car toll, and walking. The bridge connects two main...

Harbour Park

Advantages: Children will love it and its FREE to get in
Disadvantages: Gets very busy

...After living in West Sussex, and Littlehampton being just up the road, Harbour Park is a great place to take your children. It?s a big tourist attraction so it does get busy throughout the holidays. Harbour Park is in Littlehampton, West Sussex coast. To get to Harbour Park is very easy, it?s just off the A27. Trains and Buses run regular to Littlehampton, and it?s a 5 ? 10 minute walk from the train station. Harbour Park is on the seafront it has a sandy beach. Where normally if you were to walk anywhere else on the West Sussex coast its all pebbles. Not good for sitting on let me tell you. You can see the River Arun and its marina. It?s a lovely view. Harbour Park is great for the whole family if you all want a good day out. Harbour Park is open all year round, except Christmas day. Your probably thinking ?How much? well...

De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton

Advantages: Fantastic rooms, friendly staff, great location
Disadvantages: some of the other guests seem to think their a bit special!

...the town. The next room up would be the Delux room these are exactly the same as the standard rooms except they also have a small seating area and a view over the harbour - the view alone is well worth the extra money! You then have the Executive room which is the same as the the Delux just a little bigger, with the executive rooms you can choose between town view and harbour view. Then there are the suites, there are junior suites, these are the rooms i have stayed in and although a little more pricey than the rest of the rooms the are well worth the extra money for a special occasion. They are very big rooms that have a kingsize bed, a seperate lounge area normally a sofa and a dining table and chairs, as well as a large balcony with patio furniture. You get upgraded toliletries in these rooms and the last time i went they were all from...

Darling Harbour

Advantages: A Fantastic place to stop a relax
Disadvantages: None that I can think of...

...trailers dressed up to look like a train and we decided that it wasn’t worth the money – it was much nicer to just stroll round and enjoy the view. On the other side of the Harbour there is a large selection of slightly more up market restaurants and bars, as well as the ubiquitous food court that you find wherever you go in Sydney. We went to Nick’s restaurant and had an outside table that overlooked the harbour. The view at night time was fantastic, especially as everything slowly lit up as the sun went down. Whilst we were there, there was a laser show twice nightly. A jet of water was sprayed into the air and laser images were displayed on the spray as opera music played through the speakers. Whilst this was not anything amazing it was a great little touch. In all, whilst Darling harbour wasn’t...

Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge

Advantages: Fantstic views, sense of real achievement
Disadvantages: Quite pricy, need to book

...One of the biggest tourist attractions in Sydney is the Sydney Harbour Bridge. There it stands at the Quay Side all majestic and quite frankly massive. You can walk over the bridge as a pedestrian to get to the other side of the harbour. However why would you want to do that when you could climb the bridge!!!!!!! I am not frightened of heights (I mean I have done a parachute jump for gods sake) but even to me this looked quite daunting. Its 136 metres above sea level and is one of the largest bridges in the world. There is a company called Bridge Climb that have based themselves there and basically they give you training and then you climb the bridge. The Bridgeclimb is a totally professional affair and it costs $155 dollars (about 70 pound at the current exchange rate) to do it monday to friday or $175 dollars...

Friday Night - Harbour Lights

Advantages: Some nights offers all inclusive admission price, good fast food
Disadvantages: Taxi service back from HL can vary

...Harbour Lights is undoubtedly one of the best known nightspots in Barbados, and of course it is well known in Britain as well as on the island. Some might baulk at a $B35-45 (GBP12-15) entrance fee but the alcohol is all inclusive for this fee on a Friday night, and the measures are generous. Harbour Lights is partially outdoors, and even at night it is still plenty warm enough to dance under the stars. The food is your standard fast food, and is reasonably priced. Throughout the week there are special theme nights, and the punters tend to be many tourists, although there are also Bajans there. One thing to watch out for though is the price you get charged for a cab when you leave Harbour Lights. Some unscrupulous drivers will say one fee and then charge you another. One trip to St Lawrence Gap cost $B55 (GBP18), whilst we had...

Review of Barbados - Harbour Lights

The Inn, English Harbour (Antigua)

Advantages: Clean, large rooms, situated on a quiet beach with beautiful view from the rooms and restaurant
Disadvantages: only basic air-conditioning provided, no internet connection in rooms.

...Clean beachfront hotel offering great views over the quiet bay. The beach can only be accessed by hotel guests or guests of a neighbouring small hotel, so it does not get very noisy or over-crowded. Breakfast is taken on the beachfront every morning. One can then spend the day on the hotel's beach, kayaking or sailing (the hotel provides equipment), at the poolside, or exploring the island. The hotel is roughly a 15 minute drive to the capital or a 5 minute boat ride to the historical English Harbour. The ever popular tourist attraction of Shirley's heights (which offers steal band entertainment and barbequed food on Sunday evenings) is only 5 minutes away. Eric Clapton's haven is only 10 minutes down the road! Many of the islands well known scuba diving sights are within 10 minutes of the bay of this hotel. The hotel offers...

Review of Inn, English Harbour

darling harbour

Advantages: close to CBD,large ammount of shops and cafes, pleasent atmosphere
Disadvantages: crowded at weekends, overpriced, gets boring real quick

...If you are looking for authentic australian atmosphere, then Darling Harbour would be one place best avoided. Okay, its situated around a harbour, but where isn't in Sydney?. Its main claim to fame is its huge exhibition hall and conference centre, where some events in the olympics were situated. But who travels all this way to look at a conference centre. Kids may enjoy Sega World, but apart from that theres little else for them. Cafes and bars are horrendously expensive, although there are a multitude to choose from, plus a large food court. If you are after items of australiana to take home to friends and loved ones then there are plenty of shops to cater for your needs. Whether its a didgereedoo or a toy koala you will find it here in abundance. Expect to pay higher than average prices though as darling harbours main customers are...

Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb

Advantages: Great View of Auckland
Disadvantages: Little excitement

...'Climb Auckland's Harbour Bridge!' the article said and naively mental pictures of spiderman crept into my head filling me with childish glee... I could imagine myself boldly climbing up narrow steps and finally hauling myself to the top to be confronted by the most stunning views of Auckland. In reality the Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb, run by the thrill-seekers guru AJ Hackett did not live up to my expectations and my Spiderman dreams were left unfullfilled. It costs $65 to climb the bridge and this was a significant factor in my decision to climb the bridge (it was cheaper than bungy jumping off it for $125). however the bridge climb doesn't hold the same adrenalin thrills. You are dressed in 'stylish' grey overalls and harnessed to a handrail on a relatively wide walkway and led by a guide. the attraction is very quiet...
