Holiday Inn, Oxford (Peartree Roundabout)
Advantages: Modern, great location, excellent facilities
Disadvantages: Can be expensive if not booked through a deal
...I have stayed at this hotel numerous times over the past few years, most recently for a long weekend in October 2009.
The Hotel
The hotel is just off the A34 approximately 15 minutes outside the City Centre of Oxford, and is easily accessible whether you are approaching from the north or the south.
The hotel is large and modern. There is a large reception area as you enter the hotel. To the right of the reception is a sizeble bar area, and the restaurant sits just off the bar in a separate room.
The staff are always extremely friendly and welcoming and work to ensure that you are checked in efficiently. Each time you pass reception they make a point of greeting you.
There is a pool which is available to residents free of charge.
Standard Rooms
The rooms are a good size and are always clean. Each room includes an open...

Review of Holiday Inn, Oxford

No mum it's not a petrol station, it's the Holiday Inn Oxford.
Advantages: Great Price. Good location for roads. Next to park and ride, cheaper than paying for parking!
Disadvantages: Another Holiday Inn, nothing that unique about it. Surly reception staff.
...August sees the birthday of my mother, an annual event that our family comes together to celebrate in one way or another.
We have had a rather turbulent year so my brother and I felt it was necessary to take my mother and father away for a birthday celebration as a family. After a good trawl of the internet we decided to visit Oxford. As my brother has two young children it was necessary to consider a family room, ideally with some facilities to keep the children entertained, so we found ourselves at Holiday Inn Oxford.
Booking
I booked the hotel at www.holidayinn.co.uk as part of their summer promotion. The rate was half price at £49 a night including breakfast which for Oxford in the heart of summer was cheap. The credit crunch certainly has provided us with LOTS of bargains!
Once booked I received an e-mail confirmation...

A Chump at Oxford
Advantages: Timeless Humour
Disadvantages: Nothing
...Laurel & Hardy Volume 1 - A Chump at Oxford
This is a single DVD containing 3 wonderful films;
A chump at oxford
From soup to nuts
Another fine mess
The films are in their original black and white format and also ?colourised? version.
The main feature is
?A Chump at oxford?
This is a superb comedy made when Laurel and Hardy where at their best.
By pure accident it seems Stan is related to one of Oxfords finest ?Fellow? and is given a place there with Ollie as his butler. When Stan gets a knock on the head he wiggles those ears and starts fighting everyone in sight, he also thinks that he is a lord until another bang brings him back to normal.
Simply brilliant, a fighting Stan is something to behold and worth the money for this movie alone.
Second Movie;
?From...

OXFORD TUBE - SIMPLY AND EASY TO USE
Advantages: stressfree, quick, easy to use
Disadvantages: may be separated if bus is full up
...We went to London on Saturday to see The Sound Of Music at the London Palladium. As accommodation is expensive in London, we decided to stay at our usual Premier Travel Inn at Didcot and drive in. However, somebody recommended the Oxford Tube, so we decided to give ourselves a stress free trip and not have to worry about parking and booked the Oxford Tube instead.
What is the Oxford Tube? Well, The Oxford Tube is a bus service that at peak times runs every 15 minutes between Oxford and London.
We were very happy with the Tube and will definitely be using it again.
There are a number of stops in Oxford where you can get on and off, namely:
Speedwell Street, St Aldgates, Gloucester Green, High Street, St Clements, Oxford Brookes University, Headington, Gladstone Road, Green Road and Sandhills. We got on at Thornhills Park...

The Oxford Dictionary of Rhymes
Advantages: Easy to use, comprehensive
Disadvantages: None
...Let's suppose you are a poet or a song writer and you need a rhyme. Rather than beating your brains out for hours on end wasting paper, what you need is a copy of what is probably the world's best English language rhyming dictionary, the Oxford Dictionary of Rhymes. Actually, it is not just a English language rhyming language dictionary, as well as proper names and pace names, it contains foreign teems, too.
Unlike some behemoth rhyming dictionaries, this one is of a sensible size. I can imagine a poet in his or her garret, notebook in one hand, pen or pencil between teeth, with the Oxford Dictionary of Rhymes in their other hand.
How is the book laid out? Firstly there is a preface which explains what the book is and also why it is. Then there is the introduction by John Lennard. Actually, this is more than a mere introduction. It...

Experience Thaiand in Oxford
Advantages: Great food, great service, A little piece of thailand
Disadvantages: I havent found any
...Having just returned from my around the world trip, I was happy to re-visit this gem of a restaurant in Oxford. Bangkok house is my favourite Thai restaurant and only a few places in Thailand delivered food as good as this.
We decided to go to the restaurant for lunch today. The reason we did this was simple - the restaurant has for the past 2 years offered a one plate lunch meal menu for £5.
However, having not been here since been back in the UK I decided to go for the set menu of a starter and main for £9.95. So here is my experience.
Location
------------
The restaurant is located in the historic university city of Oxford. The restaurant is located slightly out of the hustle and bustle of the city centre, just next to the canal and within a couple of minute walk to the castle site and the Universities. Immediately across the road...

I Spy Oxford Spires
Advantages: Well located, Gym & Spa
Disadvantages: Small Bar, Lack of Sound Proofing
...My partner and I decided to have a few days away to celebrate our birthdays, somewhere nice and relaxing and peaceful. After a little think we decided on Oxford, so headed straight for the hotelclub.net website and booked 2 nights in the Four Pillars Oxford Spires Hotel partially due to the fact that we had never stayed in a Four Spires hotel as they only have about 5 hotels all in the Oxford area.
The hotel is easy to find as it is located on the main road into Oxford, just off the A34 which is best go to from Junction 13 of the M4. The hotel is set is amongst a small amount of parkland close to the river Thames (more on this a bit further down), and its light coloured stone gives it a welcoming feel. Just outside main entrance there are a few 'short stay' parking spaces which can be used when checking in / out to avoid having to...

Why Oxford?
Advantages: Friendly students and social life, Fantastic societies to get involved with, Proximity to London
Disadvantages: Very academic! Highly pressurised and very stressful
...The aura surrounding Oxford is one which contributes significantly to the pressure on students who are accepted to the university. Not only do they have to contend with very intense workloads and deadlines, but they have to finish term without collapsing and return home to face the curiosity (and often anticipation) of friends and family - making it difficult to admit that the experience may not be as rewarding as it seemed initially.
My own experience of Oxford (so far, as a 1st year) has been very mixed and very intense. Without a doubt, the college you find yourself at and the course you have chosen can make or break your time at the university - because there is simply no time to turn back once term has begun. The intensity of the institution demands excellent self-organisation and motivation, because despite the well-known tutorial...

Oxford Dictionary of Ecology
Advantages: Very useful
Disadvantages: None
...The new edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Ecology is a very handy reference work for the student of ecology or for those interested in environmental matters.
It is listed in alphabetical order (as one would expect) and covers all branches of ecology and related fields. As well as covering "things" (such as haboob -a local Sudanese name for a dust storm- hadalpelagic zone -the deepest part of he pelagic zone of the ocean- eustatic -applied to the worldwide changes in sea levels induced by growth or decay of glaciers or by tectonic movements- and raised bog -an ombrogeneous bog community-) it also covers personalities such as: Malthus, Cuvier, Engler, etc.
The book is also fairly profusely illustrated with clear, concise drawings and some illustrative diagrams, too.
The style of the entries in the book is clear and well...

Oxford's Cruising Restaurant
Advantages: A wonderfully special evening out.
Disadvantages: none that I can think of.
...With snow, ice and floods around now is a good time to remember and look forward to summer.
If a king entertained his queen in Oxford he might take her to Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir but he would probably take his mistress on the Rosamund the Fair.
Rosamund the Fair is a purpose built narrow boat restaurant which cruises the canal and river of Oxford transporting its privileged diners back through time to what is possibly Oxford's most romantic piece of history.
Rosamund, the daughter of a welsh Knight, was the much loved mistress of King Henry II. During this medieval period the English kings made nearby Woodstock their favourite hunting lodge and it was there that Henry kept his love.
Many legends and myths surround Rosamund but the most romantic and tragic comes from the fifteenth century. This story says that Henry kept...
