A Prayer For Owen Meany

...explaining that he is a Christian because of Owen Meany, but this story isn't exactly about religion. The themes that run through it are conveniently alliterative: faith, fate and family. Owen is a unique, breathtaking feat of the imagination. He is tiny, with a singular voice caused by some sort of defect in his larynx, which gives him an unsettling falsetto; for that reason, all Owen's dialogue is written in capitals. Later, Owen adopts capitals as his writing style. From the start, it is given that Owen is head and shoulders above the crowd, despite his unfortunate size. The intense faith Irving invests Owen with at times radiates off the page... you don't have to believe a thing to feel the power of his faith and this is the point. Say A Little Prayer for John Irving's Best Novel

Advantages: Full characters, interesting story line, fascinating writing
Disadvantages: You might cry at the end - not always a disadvantage

...After my recent review of Fourth Hand, I thought I would update this review a touch so you can understand that John Irving's books aren't all bad. I became a fan of John Irving after reading "Hotel New Hampshire" and have read everything he has written since. And while they are all enjoyable - to differing extents - none of his novels have touched me as much as "A Prayer for Owen Meany". Perhaps I felt a special closeness to the book since the two main characters are both flawed - both physically and emotionally. Owen is a dwarf and has having a feeling he is on a mission from God. Johnny Wheelwright is dyslexic (like myself) and is in a life-long search for his father. The answer to a lazy housewife's prayer

Advantages: Cleans well easy to use

...I have found the answer to my prayers.. Something that really takes the effort out of washing floors. Browsing the aisles of Asda this evening I spotted a largish colourful box on the top shelf with the magic word REDUCED, always guaranteed to grab my interest. On further examination I discovered that this box held a Flash Power mop. Having just had a laminate floor laid and a disgusting mop and bucket at £10 this seemed too good an offer to miss so into my trolley it went. On arriving home I couldn't wait to see what magic the box held. Could this be an answer to my prayers? Floor cleaning without an effort. I am unable to give any information about the assembly of the mop as my son spotted the box and put it all together for me. The only comment I can make is that all seemed very simple and effortless and took less than 5...

...Eternal - Power of a Woman One of my favourite girl bands from old were Eternal (this is probably showing my age a bit but oh well). They were popular before The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud etc and I think one of the reasons why they were successful was because they could actually sing and had some lovely harmonies, with beautiful voices that all worked well together. They were also all very pretty as well so I'm sure this added to their success. Eternal were formed in 1992 and eventually ceased as a band around the year 2000.
