...I chose the Palm Treo 500 for the fact that it has a full keypad for typing, in the style of the blackberry and iphone design rather than having to rely on predictive text etc for email, and although the buttons are naturally small, this aspect of the phone is still very appealing. Caps lock typing can be very awkward however... As a macintosh user, I wasn't sure about using a windows based product, but the functionality is very good and simple to use. Email - for a pop3/imap4 account, once set up works very well although it helps if you have experience of setting up email accounts as you need to know all the settings or where to get hold of them... Internet I find is perfectly functional but the screen size makes browsing frustrating! It is important with the Palm Treo and similar products to not expect too much from these facilities...

Review of Palm Treo 500

m500. All the information in the Palm in my hand!

Advantages: Stylish, light and functional
Disadvantages: No colour screen

...thought this was a little gimmicky but I'm amazed how many times I've used it to jot down a diagram or take someones phone number quickly. I've also installed additional software from the web such as a dictionary various games and utilities which allow me to upload Word documents, Excel files and pdf documents. All very useful when you need to to some research on the train and don't want to be bothered with taking the laptop or a bunch of paper documents. Although the m500 is getting "a little long in the tooth" it still looks stylish with its thin profile and brushed aluminium finish. Finally, the battery life between recharges is pretty good (this is probably down to the fact that it doesn't have a coloured screen)and lasts about three to four weeks. Overall a good PDA from a company that knows what its customers need....

Review of Palm M500

Good phone, but screen is easy to scratch!

Advantages: Nice looking phone, feature rich
Disadvantages: screen scratches, not the most durable phone on the market.

...I like the palm treo 500 - it looks good and provides plenty of features for users on the go, my favourite being the email feature - now I get emails delivered to my phone I can't imagine life without it. The Palm treo seems to have everything, but one problem remains - it just isn't hard wearing enough. Within the first week of me getting my phone the screen had light scratches on it and by the end of the first month it got so bad that it was hard to use the phone - I don't believe this is because I don't look after it, it remains in my jacket most of the time and every other phone I have owned has always looked immaculate with a well kept screen, the palm treo though hasn't followed in this tradition! Luckily I managed to find some screen polish on ebay that manages to get rid of these scratches, but it does get annoying to keep...

My MX500 - the Battery Monster

Advantages: Great Pictures, good quality
Disadvantages: Eats batteries very quickly

...I couldnt afford a new camera and after using one of those tiny keyring digi camera this was brilliant. I had priced up a lot of cameras and needed at least £79.99 for the basic one. My friend then kindly lent me his MX500 and now he has a new camera phone I have brought it off him cheaply. The camera is silver and quite bulky compared to the newer ones. I have put mine into a shoulder strap case. He did warn me that it eats batteries (4 x AA) and so like a fool went out and purchase some cheap ones which lasted all of about 10 minutes. Hoping to get a recharger for batteries. As I have not yet had the manual for it I can only tell you what I have learned. It is a 1.5 mill pixel which is fab. There is an automatic flash. But when you ask people to smile expect a 10 sec wait so not so good for taking childrens...

Review of Fujifilm MX 500

Stylish, good range of features and fast internet, but poor build

Advantages: Good size, good features, easy to use, feels good, stylish, fast internet and good battery life.
Disadvantages: Poor build quality, some software issues.

...Having used Palm for several years in varying shape and form, when looking for a new mobile phone to replace a Nokia, given good experiences of Palm in the past, it seemed a good idea to give their new (as was then) smart phone a try. The first three or so months of owning the phone proved the 500 has plenty of features and is rather user friendly, it felt and looked great and build quality hadn't proven to be much of a problem, however after this time, things started to go downhill. The main glitch would be the socket used to plug in a USB cable / charger. The quality of this is has proven to be questionable, considering that it is very easy to disconnect the socket from the main circuit board inside the phone, making charging either challenging or impossible. Palm Top of the pile

Advantages: Light, powerful, elegant, good battery life, lots of software available.
Disadvantages: Not a stand alone product

...on battery life, is that the battery life is greatly reduced if you use the backlit mode for your palm. For people who are always on the move, and not always near a charger, there is also a highly useful thing called the power clip (see www.powerclip.de), which allows you to charge your Palm from a 9V battery, only half charging it, but this may well stop you from running on empty and thereby losing everything. Similarly using the IR beam is another way to diminish battery life, and it is reckoned that 1 minute of beaming takes 1 hour of the length of time the battery will hold for. For anyone syncing with a desktop computer, then there is also now a USB syncing cable, which also includes a charger, which eliminates the need to have to find a plug socket to connect the charger part of the hotsync cradle to. I would recommend this to anyone...

Advantages: everything! cheap reliable, fantastic features
Disadvantages: no spare stylus or screen protectors in box

...I got my new Palm TX in August this year and I have been very impressed with its performance and flexibility. I previously owned a Palm Tungsten E which screen was 320 x 320 resolution and had no Bluetooth or Wi-fi, so these 2 features are great additions for me. For those who have never used a PDA they are all touch screen and most have handwriting recognition to save having a keyboard and in Palm handhelds this is called Graffiti and is very handy when writing as you can just write as you normally would. The Screen size of the TX is 320 x 460 so videos can be viewed in landscape and portrait modes, so effectively can be in widescreen. The video quality is very impressive and I would highly recommend in investing in a 2GB SD card for those long journeys.
