Palm TX - Launched 2005 and still the top PDA

Advantages: Stable, excellent OS; masses of free software available; still the top dog.
Disadvantages: None.

...using it as a souped-up iPod replacement, you can upgrade the storage using any SD card (and they are stupidly cheap at the moment) so you should never run out of space for your music and video collection. It runs on Palm's excellent Garnet operating system - and you're unlikely to find a more stable operating system on a pda (other than the version of Mac OSX that Apple uses on the iPhone). Battery life is also excellent. Actually, I cannot remember it ever having run out of battery while I've been using it. It seems to be able to carry on for hours on end without blinking. There's not really much you can say against the TX in the pda stakes. To put it bluntly, how many other items of consumer electronics that were launched in 2005 can you (a) still buy today and (b) can still hold their own against the competition? None!...

Palm Zire - the basics of handheld computing

Advantages: easy to use, lots of programs, everything you need is supplied with the unit
Disadvantages: no backlight, only 2MB of memory

...I've had my Palm Zire for around about two years now and it was great value for money when I got it (£20 in the bargain basement section of Woolworths) and I have used it on and off every day since. The software that comes pre installed is quite useful and it is very easy to find additional software on the internet. The unit itself ships with a CD containing the Palm Desktop software for synchronising the Zire with the computer, which means that if you lose one zire, you can simply buy another Palm handheld and the information that was on your zire can be copied to that very easily. The unit also contains a usb cable and a protective screen. The zire is very small and will fit into most pockets without leaving a massive bulge. Best Phone-Palm PDA hybrid yet

Advantages: All-in-one! best phone+organiser on market

I needed a Phone + Palm combined (ease of carrying single item and easy transfer between the 2 is invaluable) and decided this was best model overall. Previous makers Handspring now taken over by Palm (known as palmOne now) As a Phone, it is very decent. Has a protruding aerial but do not find it troublesome. Calls are easy to make with easy access to dial pad, quick dial buttons (inc direct access to fave web pages if required), redial and all the other features u would expect a modern good phone to do. Easy use of options like copying phone numbers into contact list. Very useful dial log showing in+out calls and their durations. Palm TX

Advantages: everything! cheap reliable, fantastic features
Disadvantages: no spare stylus or screen protectors in box

...I got my new Palm TX in August this year and I have been very impressed with its performance and flexibility. I previously owned a Palm Tungsten E which screen was 320 x 320 resolution and had no Bluetooth or Wi-fi, so these 2 features are great additions for me. For those who have never used a PDA they are all touch screen and most have handwriting recognition to save having a keyboard and in Palm handhelds this is called Graffiti and is very handy when writing as you can just write as you normally would. The Screen size of the TX is 320 x 460 so videos can be viewed in landscape and portrait modes, so effectively can be in widescreen. The video quality is very impressive and I would highly recommend in investing in a 2GB SD card for those long journeys. Palm Treo 680

Advantages: Small and well made, Palm OS
Disadvantages: a bit fiddly

...This is a well thought-out device with a good touch sensitive screen and a surprisingly usable keyboard, even for people like me, with fat fingers. I have used Palm OS PDAs for many years so I have a lot of data and applications from previous devices that I want to maintain and I was keen to stay with the Palm OS operating system rather than switch to Windows at this stage. It was easy to move the Treo 680 from my Palm T5 without any loss of data. Now I only need to carry one device instead of a PDA and a phone. The stylus is a bit fiddly to use when compared to the chunky T5 one, but then the stylus is not needed as much given that the keyboard replaces the need for text entry with the stylus. The Palm

Advantages: Great colour and comparative value for money. Rechargeable battery a big plus.
Disadvantages: Slightly bulkier than average PDA's

...The Palm IIIc handheld PDA is a great help for an experienced Palmer. First off, if you must have color this is a must have for you because the color is crisp and clear. If you would like a good audio, music, sound this is probably not for you because of the high peak of the volume, very low, would be too quiet to hear in a croud of people or any place where it is noisy. If you are a first user I would suggest the Palm X, Palm IIIe they are cheap and work great! I found the unit to have excellent contrast and display. Once you are used to colour - it is difficult to go back to monochromatic displays. This is the color version of the Palm 3 and looks better and clearer for it. Memory is not upgradable and 8mb is not a huge amount. I have 3mb left and starting to worry. Bad mistake but I will cope...
