Palm Tungsten vs Ipaq, sayonara Ipaq
Advantages: small, fast, sexy, best palm ever
Disadvantages: relatively high price
...I never thought I would make the case for a palm handheld from 3com. I used to be a dedicated Ipaq fan but got increasingly disappointed with it. So I decided to take a bold step and try out the new Palm Tungsten. In one word: AMAZING! I will compare, wherever possible the Tungsten with the Ipaq. Note that I am comparing the new Tungsten with my previously owned Ipaq 3850.
For exact specifications of both PDA's I refer you to the www.palm.com and www.compaq.com
Look and feel
I always found the Ipaq sexy, but it is still a bit bulky. The Palm is not much lighter (6.2 oz vs 5.6 oz for the palm), but much smaller (length 4'' vs 5'' for the Ipaq). This is due to the fact that the bottom slides open to reveal the grafiti writing area. The garfite colored aluminium casing feels much more sturdy than the aluminium looking, though plastic...

Dont stick your Tungsten at me, I Palm you up!
Advantages: Slim, large screen, portable, sexy, like a super model turned into a PDA
Disadvantages: Battery life, ugly interface, sounds like a dying giraffe sometimes
...constantly it's 3 hours, that's very dissapointing since the Palm is not that fast. I am glad it's not a pacemaker.
So flaws aside what can this piece of technology do? Well you can view your pictures with it, you can edit your Office Word/Excel/Powerpoint files on it, listen to MP3s, watch videos, take quick notes, organise your day, surf the internet (when it has internet access) and read ebooks with it. All this straight out of the box without purchasing extra software. There are also games on the device and emulators that let you play console games i.e. Gameboy Advance, so that's very tempting (you must own game to be legally allowed to play it on the Palm) but they will need downloading or purchasing. This device really is a mini box of tricks, I actually wrote this review on my Tungsten E before uploading it here. Not to shabby don't you...

Palm Tungsten E2
Advantages: Stylish, Durable, Easy to use.
Disadvantages: No Wifi, Limited SD Card Memory
...I bought the E2 about a year ago (2007). Since then I have greatly enjoyed using it. This Palm Pilot comes with Real Player, and all the other great programs that Palm always includes. It is very easy to install new programs from the internet and on the disc that is included in the package. It is very handy when managing one's daily life. I personally use it to manage my money, daily, monthly, and yearly activities, its great if you need to jot something down real quick, It stores all my phone contacts and eMails. Its also great for checking eMail on the go. You can download your eMails from you computer through the mail application or it you have a Bluetooth connection to your phone you can check via that. What is also handy is you can store photos, songs, video clips, and other media on a SD Card up to 1 GB. Plus you can transfer...

In you Palm
Advantages: A neat unit with lots of applications
Disadvantages: None
...The Palm Tungsten is a sleek cool looking handheld with a vast array of features that are going to suit the majority of users. It comes with most of these features pre-loaded, but there are more on the provided CD which also contains the software to enable synchronization with your PC or Mac. Also provided in the box are several power adaptors which will make in rechargeable almost worldwide. Although the unit comes with Bluetooth there is also an additional cable supplied which will link your Palm to your computer for the transfer of data. I have found through experience that the cable method is definitely significantly quicker compared with the Bluetooth, but again each to their own.
One thing I have noticed is that the lifespan of the internal rechargeable lithium battery is greatly improved from previous...

Tungsten E2, my first PDA
Advantages: easy to use, long battery life, great screen, read the review
Disadvantages: read the review goddammit!
...BACKGROUND
********************
I am a bit of a gadget nerd. I love gadgets. When I see one I don't need, I'll find excuses to need one.
I started a new job few months back, and I saw one of my workmate pluggin a PDA to a craddle everyday, until the day I asked him about it.
When he showed me, I thought that was really cool, and I wanted one. I bloody hardly knew about PDAs!!!
Anyway, I searched for the same as his, a Palm Tungsten T3, but it was apparently discontinued... SO I started a painstaking search for the new gadget of my dreams (needs): A PDA. Ta da da...
After a few weeks browsing around, I came to the conclusion that the cheapest and apparently most suitable for my needs was the Tungsten E2, that I bought from Pixmania.com (reviewed by me in previous episodes, check it out...).
LOOKS

It is a PDA...

Handy little Palm
Advantages: Great colour screen WiFi, infrared & great application support
Disadvantages: none really
...The Palm Tungston C has a 400Mhz Processor, making it faster than a lot of others on the market, especially for this size device. Also the fact it runs PalmOS and not Windows makes it run faster than most Pocket PCs and other variants.
It comes with a rechargable battery, which chages each time you sit it in the cradle. I've regularly got 7-9 hours out of the battery, although using networking will reduce this down to 3-4hours.
The inbuild 64Mb of RAM is also pretty impressive, allowing you download plenty of applications and store lots of files, without the usual need to remove files everytime you want to create something new.
As I mentioned the Tungsten C comes with 802.11b networking support, running at 11Mbps. The receiver and transmitter are fantastic and signal strength is comparable to any other wireless device...

Palm Tungsten T (2nd hand BUYERS BEWARE)
Advantages: Brilliant when new
Disadvantages: After two years use it begins to deteriorate
...I bought a brand new "T" to replace my Palm Vx which had done me a good turn but was beginning to play up.
I loved the "T" right from the start, it was fast in its work, small for my handbag or pocket and did all the usual things like Date Book, Contacts, etc and one press on the Hot sync button on the cradle and all my Word and Excel documents and notes prepared on the go were transferred seamlessly to my home PC using the Documents to Go programme which came in the box.
Photos downloaded from my PC are very good on the bright colour screen.
Voice recorder is good too, but I soon changed the button on the side to "Date Book" for I often found the unit recording by itself having obviously touched the button by mistake on picking up the unit.
Then after two years things began to go wrong, first thing I noticed was that the screen had...

Its Fast and Furious!
Advantages: Beautifully clear bright and sharp screen, WiFi Access without huge loss of battery, 51 MB ram And fantastic processor mean its FAST, Built in QWERTY Keyboard, A wide array of both downloadable and supplied (on disc) software
Disadvantages: Only comes with a mono speaker and headset, Cannot use the voice recorder without the optional! headset, very little or limited MAC support, Screen is very delicate and can easilly break, and having fat fingers, the keys are a bit small and fiddley
...* Initial Note *
Speaking on behalf of the family, the Palm Tungsten C has just been purchased by my sister. Joanne works in Marketing for a scottish brewery, which means that it is essential for her to be organised, as well as have relatively easy access to applications where she can do her work, and even more importantly something that can be served as a good communication device.
This accumulation of needs, required her to purchase something that would allow her to do her work, whilst on the move (she is always travelling). So this wee little handheld device was purchased for exactly this reason, and as I have experienced, serves her well. (-and me well, lol)
So, why should you, or should you not buy the PALM Tungsten C, well, I shall explain.
*Its features*
WiFi

Palm Tunsten fits needs to a T
Advantages: Its a palm sized, fully functional computer
Disadvantages: Grafitti interface can go haywire with overuse
...Ahh, the joys of using your palm for pleasure...NOT THAT WAY! I'm talking about the Palm Tungsten T handheld PDA, a fully functional, palm sized computer. I must admit, I'm a bit biased being a computer enthusiast but, on the flip side, that also means that you can trust what I'm saying as truthful and enthusiastic. With that said, on to the review.
When the Tungsten T (TT) was initially released, it was heralded as the next generation of handheld devices. It has a unique sliding body which increases screen size by about ten percent. When closed, the TT is 9.5 centimeters (about 3.75 inches) in height, when open it is 11.5 cm in height (about 4.5 inches) and 1.5 cm (about .5 inch) thick. In closed position, the grafitti writing area is hidden. Very compact, though not something you want hanging in your shirt pocket behind...

Fast, functional, and packed with features!
Advantages: Fast, huge storage capabilities, wireless internet, great software, easy to use....
Disadvantages: Mono audio
...I have been using the Palm Tungsten C for 6 months with exceptional performance and quality. I will convey to you, in my opinion, what I believe are the most important features of the device.
-> Design
To look at the Tungsten C is very sleek. To accomodate the full qwerty keyboard the screen is not the full size of the device but roughly two thirds. The screen is cystal clear and provides exceptional colour even with high definition digital photos. The device is very slim at only just over 1cm thick. There is a slot down one side to keep your included metal stylus, and the other side has a slot for the removable screen protector. At the top of the device is a SD card slot, the infa-red port and a mono (small scale) headphone/microphone aperture. To the bottom is the universal connector which is used for charging and connecting to...
