Panasonic Lumix TZ6 - metal-bodied compact zoom

...I always find it a little strange when a company releases two similar models at the same time, especially when the price difference is only around £40. The Panasonic Lumix TZ6 and TZ7 are similar stable-mates, with the TZ7 being the superior of the two. Having said that, the extra features of the TZ7 are things I can quite comfortably live without, such as the superior video capability with stereo sound, an HDMI output, and the ability of the camera to recognise up to 15 of your friends when they appear in a picture. Why would I want that? I don't have 15 friends - and even if I did, I'm sure I could remember them myself! Panasonic Lumix TZ6, Versatile compact with great image quality

Advantages: Fantastic little camera with 12 x zoom & 10.1MP (better than TZ5), but cheaper than TZ7

A great video recorder

Advantages: SP and LP
Disadvantages: You cannot easily create an Index point

...I love this machine. I've had mine for 5 or 6 years, and it has two definite plus points: SP & LP (with LP, your 4-hour cassette becomes an 8-hour one with no real loss of quality!) and the Replay button. You press it and the tape goes back about 30 seconds so you can very, very easily listen again to a word or scene that you didn't quite get. A recommended video recorder. However, you cannot create an Index point (to easily find the start of earlier recordings) without actually recording a few seconds. This is very silly, but usable. Otherwise, great! It's a pity that video recording is coming to an end, but of course DVDs offer soooh many advantages that it's quite understandable. The Panasonic NV-HD636 has really been my workhorse and given me hours of pleasure. John-in-Brussels....

Pocket-sized Panasonic produces perfect pictures.

Advantages: Too many to list, please read review.
Disadvantages: Poorly situated controls.

...of problems to report, the main thing wrong with this camera is that the controls are a bit small and fiddly and the shutter button and the zoom are so similar and close it is easy to mix them up. The second thing I could point a finger at in respect of it not being very good is the video capture but I am being very picky if I do so because the video capture on all compacts are poor and this one is no different from others in that it will record decent video in perfect light but useless video in anything other than perfect light, if you have read my camera reviews in the past you will know that I am a big believer in cameras taking still photographs and video cameras doing the videoing and the two should never mix. So with a small finger pointed at a couple of slight issues that I had with this unit it is back to what?s great about it...

...I have had this product for almost 2 years now and I can honestly say that I couldn't live without it now! Ease of Use The set-up is pretty self-explanatory but if in doubt the manual is very helpful. Once all set up it's relatively easy to use. Channel surfing is as you would expect, but there is also an electronic program guide which you can access by the cleverly named "guide" button on the remote! Setting programs to record is easy too, however I found that when setting several programs to record in one go a little tiresome as you have to go through several screens, the interface could have been a little smoother. Again, to play what you've recorded it's easy peasy. There's a library button marked on the remote which makes it virtually foolproof to access, particularly for people like my Mum who is a little nervous around...
