PANASONIC TH42PX60B 42" Plasma TV

Disadvantages: No back to the stand which makes it hard to conceal inflexible scart leads.

...I bought this TV at a special online price of £2074 (Curry's website) and it was money well spent! The first time I turned it on I was struck by the excellent picture quality, it really is superb. I looked at a lot of plasmas before I bought this one and it definitely has one of the sharpest pictures and the best colours of anything in its price bracket. The stand doesn't come with the TV for that price and will cost you an extra £100, Alternatively, you can mount it on the wall. If you use the stand and you have DVD players, Sky boxes, game consoles etc. then you might find it difficult to conceal the thick scart leads from view, these tend not to be very flexible and I can't bend mine to fit in the channels on the back of the stand. ...The PANASONIC TH42PX60B is built like a tank. If you want a TV that's not going to let you down go for a Panasonic. I chose Plasma for it's movie smoothness and acurate shadow detailing. This TV is is fantastic in every way. Even the built in sound is such a high standard, I have a £5500 hi-fi that I run the consoles and PC through but for watching TV the speakers really are up to the task, decent reproduction. It has built in freeview, 2 HDMI sockets, 3 scarts, component and a PC input as well as audio inputs. I have mine on the pedestal stand which is really neat and tidy. The TV is VERY heavy (as plasmas are). It handles 720P and 1080I. As a Media Centre display in my lounge its running 1280 X 720 beautifully, the only thing is that being a plasma the screen temporarily burns in icons etc if you play games for a long period. ...quality, to some the silver casing compared to the usual black may not appeal to everyone but then that is a cosmetic preference which should not take away the fact that Panasonic in my opinion are one of the leading manufactures of plasma technology. If like me you have heard horror stories regarding Screen Retention/Screen Burn with Plasma units then you might be somewhat cautious about purchasing a plasma over an LCD screen but in my experience this issue has not affected me. Granted if a channel logo or static image is displayed for too long the image my be visible when looking at a black screen but this does not effect your viewing and the image will soon disappear after you have changed channel. Certainty don't t let this put you off. Both LCD and Plasma technology have their advantages and disadvantages and I would choose Plasma...

Neovia NEOPL-3950 42" HD plasma

Advantages: Value for money. 42". High Definition. Sound. Good spec.
Disadvantages: Buzzing sound. Some banding. Black levels. No-name brand

...three quarters and turn down the brightness to one quarter or less. Turn down the colour so that it is one third. 'Superbit' and 'XCQ Ultra' DVDs look good on this screen. As do most ordinary DVDs. Whereas DVD recordings at 4 hour mode, anything VHS and most terrestrial RTE and non-BBC/ITV free satellite channels are not great. Once you've seen high definition, it's hard to go back... Even though the set has a claimed 3000:1 contrast ratio, I think that this optimistic. Dark films like 'Panic Room' still look grey-ish with the above picture settings. Plasma is supposed to be better than LCD in this regard. I've all the TV manufacturer's high definition demo disks (bright outdoor sceens basically) and I can confirm that these all look fantastic. So maybe you don't need to pay through the nose for a Sony Bravia or a Panasonic...

Disadvantages: Not High Definition

...or on it's stand. I have a black plasma on the silver stand which might sound odd but it looks great. I chose the silver stand because my actual tv stand is chrome so I thought it would go better together and it did. The picture quality is very good and the tv is very easy to use. I am a pretty demanding customer working with audio visual equipment on a daily basis I know what's available and what the best quality is. And the picture quality isn't the best you can find, but it is very good. The build quality is ecellent, and being a Panasonic it will last for many years to come with very few problems. So on the whole this is a great tv and good value for money. I would definitely recommend to any potential buyers....

...probably fair to say that you have some decent equipment already or will certainly add equally good equipment with this. I had standard Sky Plus before I bought this TV so I decided I would upgrade to Sky Plus HD. I have to say that I was really impressed with the picture quality of this screen, whether you are watching a freeview broadcast or Sky you will get a crisp noise free picture which has great blacks and copes well with fast paced scenes which can sometimes cause a slight blur with some televisions. Although you get a fine picture with Blu Ray there are televisions which cope better with the format for the same amount of cash. **Sound** I was very impressed with the amazing sound which my Old Panasonic CRT produced, I now have that 28inch screen in my bedroom. Whilst not directly boasting HD capability, its 1024 X 768 resolution with DVI inputs should be capable of dealing with them.
