Plot lost in paradise

Advantages: Interesting cast, has you entertained for the first 40 minutes.
Disadvantages: Lack of storyline and poor finale

...Recently my husband and I have fallen for ordering DVD rentals based on the trailers we have seen and Paradise Lost landed on our doorstep last night and we decided to put it on. With no real stars we were hoping that this film offered a thrilling storyline and we thought it would be either similar to The Beach or Hostel so what did I really think? Paradise Lost - A Chilling Concept

Advantages: Interesting storyline - good acting - great scenery

Paradise Lost (based loosely on John Milton?s poem). Now I like various styles of music, but I am a bit of a metal head, and that is exactly what Symphony X appeal to. In short, they are a power metal quintet. I am not saying it is pneumatic drilling all the way, oh no: they have a varied assortment of sounds from fast, to chunky, then to soft and melodic. There is a grand operatic sound to them too, as though their music could be the theme to Lord of the Rings or something similar. I think that sums it up briefly? Advantages: Good characterisation, enjoyable story, moving end of the book

...Paradise Lost. If you’ve read or seen a Shakespeare play, do you remember the first time? A Shakespeare virgin, trying to make sense of what the idiot was going on about. Then after the first act, it began to sink in, you suddenly realised what Shakespeare was going on about when he talked of the “the Black Ram is tupping your white ewe” (Othello, incidentally). Even the Elizabethans were sex mad! Milton in Paradise Lost is maybe not quite so humourous but he certainly questioned many aspects of religion and caused a bit of a stir in 17th Century Britain. Have They Lost It?

Advantages: Melodic and catchy, the solos are back!
Disadvantages: bland, not as good as previous work

...As one of the most constantly evolving acts on the metal landscape, it's easy to forget that Paradise Lost began their career as one of the underpinning bands of the Northern English Doom scene. While their counterparts have in many cases remained true to the sound, or deviated into more modern incarnations, not even Nick Holmes' distinctive vocal chords lend a nod to the fact that Paradise Lost 2005 are the same band responsible for 1990's seminal release 'Lost Paradise'. After flirtations with electronica and various commercialisms, Paradise Lost have settled into playing a hybrid of gothic tinged, sample laden heavy rock with 2002's 'Symbol of Life' showing that they may well have finally found their feet. Let Me Entertain You

Advantages: Bold change of direction, very consistent and accomplished album
Disadvantages: Alienates older fans, depressing content (if you don't like that sort of thing), possibly a bit samey

...I have to admit I wasn't really into music much in the early 90s, and certainly not the heavier end of the spectrum. I suspect most of you missed the early days of the northern England death/doom metal movement too, but in those days Paradise Lost sat alongside Anathema and My Dying Bride in making exceedingly dark and heavy music. Personally, although I have one of their earlier albums - Gothic - I don't really have much time for that sort of thing. While some see it as 'selling out', I'm happy that all three bands have generally become more melodic as they've matured. In fact, I only got into Paradise Lost from this album (Host), and haven't explored much of their earlier material. For those that followed their whole career, it's been an interesting progression: tipped as the new Iron Maiden in the mid-90s, around Draconian Times...

Advantages: The album that founded the gothic rock genre.
Disadvantages: The last few songs on the album are not quite as good as the start.
