Making a present of the past

Advantages: Inactive and involving insight into life, times and customs of yester-year
Disadvantages: Being mostly open air, it's not much fun in the rain and cold.

Whenever I visit the museum I?m struck by how very harsh, dark and cold life must have been for people before the advent of proper glazing and electricity. Living in a rickety building with no proper windows, no power, no running water and the only heat from the open fireplace in the centre of your ?lounge?. It must have been truly bitter in the winter. It certainly does make one appreciate all that we take for granted in modern housing! Obviously I?m not going to describe every single building in detail, as we?d be here all day. 'Know the present, know the past'

Advantages: Zhang Ziyi, beautiful cinematography

...are set in rural China, albeit at differing times. This one is set in Guizhou province, down in the south of China and Zhang has made great use of the fabulous scenery in all seasons. Visually, this is a beautiful film. The autumn colours in particular are truly gorgeous, especially when off-set by Zhao Di's brightly coloured padded jackets. Perhaps strangely, Zhang has chosen to show the present (when Yusheng returns home) in black and white and the story of his parents' meeting, forty years before, in colour. However, I think this is a good move and fits in beautifully with the mood of the film - black and white for old age and grief; colour for youth and happiness. Another thing that sets the film off beautifully is the music. It sounds quite Chinese and consists of soaring violins that go well with the mountainous terrain and Zhao...
