The Wentworth Follies
Advantages: Interesting monuments with plenty of history attached to them
Disadvantages: Charges apply to visit some of them, limited visited times.
...I recently wrote a review on the Wentworth-Woodhouse Estate, one of the finest examples of a Grand Country House and Estate in Northern England.
Situated in South Yorkshire about 4 miles North of Rotherham this Estate covers 600 acres and was once the home to one of the richest men in England, the 2nd Marquis of Rockingham, who was twice Prime Minister of England in the latter part of the 1700's.
The Grounds to the vast Wentworth Estate contains many attractions. Amongst these are four different structures known as the Wentworth Follies. Each of these monuments which are associated with the 2nd Marquis and his Father, the 1st Marquis of Rockingham, formerly the Earl of Malton were built between 1748 and 1785 have a unique design and structure.
Curiously if you look at the doorways to the first three structures in chronological...

Wentworth Woodhouse was my home!
Advantages: A great day out for free
Disadvantages: The house is not open to the public
...Take a look at the picture above of Wentworth Woodhouse. . I lived there! But more about that later....... First of all I will share a little information about this fabulous building.
Wentworth Woodhouse is one of Britain's biggest stately homes covering 2.5 acres in the village of Wentworth near Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It is just 6 miles north of Sheffield. It is set in an impressive 150 acre estate.
Now for some amazing statistics! The building itself contains over 365 rooms - one for every day of the year! It also has 1000 windows! It is so big that it is alleged that guests were once given confetti of different colours to strew so they could find their way back to their rooms!
Wentworth Woodhouse was built around 1725- 1735 and incorporates parts of an earlier 17th century manor house. It is basically two...

Death by shawl?
Advantages: Compelling story, great characters
Disadvantages: None for me
...just happens to be staying at the house already. Can she use her superior detective skills to work out who killed Tanis?
Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver series is very much of the old school of crime fiction. This particular book is set in the 1940s and this is very obvious, both from the background to the characters and the language. Although Wentworth has her own style, her work can be likened to that of Agatha Christie, and many think that her character, Miss Silver, is a direct rip-off of Miss Marple. There are no doubt similarities, but I still love reading the Miss Silver books and this one is probably one of her best.
As so often happens with this series, Miss Silver is almost an afterthought and in this book, she doesn't appear until about half way. Laura Fane is the main character; she is a very self-possessed young lady...

If only it could talk....
Advantages: Classic crime fiction
Disadvantages: Not Wentworth's best work
...and is set in the early/mid nineteen hundreds. This isn't because I don't like the more ordinary man of the street (of which I am very much one), but rather that I find I can escape when reading about a world that I have become very accustomed to, but have never been and will never be a part of. With this in mind, Patricia Wentworth's books, written in the thirties, forties and fifties, are usually a perfect read for me. The Silent Pool, although not her best novel, certainly helped me pass a few hours very pleasantly.
As a character, Miss Silver has been likened to a second class Miss Marple. The similiarities are there, without a doubt - both are old maids with a predilection for nosing out the truth - but I still think there is room for two such sleuths in crime fiction. At least Miss Silver admits that she is a private detective and she...

Secret passages and skeletons in the closet
Advantages: Enjoyable read
Disadvantages: None really
...seem. Can she solve the mystery before someone else is hurt?
In many ways, Patricia Wentworth is the poorer cousin of her more respected contemporaries, such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers. Her main character, Maud Silver, is clearly very similar to Miss Marple. However, despite the similarities, Wentworth does usually manage to put together a very readable story and this one is certainly no exception. This book is of the 'cozy' country village type of crime fiction, one of which I am very fond for its ability to help me escape.
Maud Silver is an elderly ex-governess who has an ability to sniff out a mystery a mile off and see things that not even the police can see. Never married, she is likened to Miss Marple, but I think she has a different air about her. The bane of many a police officer's life because of her skills...

Is This Really Patricia Cornwell's Work
Advantages: Dr.Kay Scarpetta appears in it a couple of times
Disadvantages: Hard to follow and thoroughly boring
...Having been a long-time fan of Patricia Cornwell?s crime/suspense novels, I was happily surprised when I received her latest book, ?Isle of Dogs,? from my mom at Christmas. I hadn?t read anything by Cornwell in a while, so I was quite eager to get down to business and sink my teeth into my new prized possession. Thinking it was another book involving Virginia Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, I was most disappointed to find that only vague references were made to Dr. Scarpetta. In fact, she only appears once or twice in the entire novel.
After reading the jacket cover (which I didn?t do when initially starting the book), I learned that this novel was an entirely different venue for Cornwell. It is her attempt at writing ?black humor.? Unfortunately, she fails miserably. There is little that is either remotely funny...

Dear Patricia... What's Happened ?
Advantages: Continues the Scarpetta series of books
Disadvantages: Poor plot, present tense writing, weaker characters
...I cannot tell you how much I was looking forward to this book. The last Scarpetta book was published in 2000, and previously to that, there had been one book a year since 1990. I started reading Blow Fly before Christmas, and I finished it 2 days ago. I suppose that says a lot about whether I liked the book or not. For me to take so long to finish a book is unheard of. In the past, I have read books in 2 or 3 days. Granted, that was before my husband and children came along ! Still, if I really like a book today, I will easily finish it within a week. All of Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta books fall into the "finish within a week" category except, I am sad to say, Blow Fly.
So, why is this ?
The Plot
------------
The book is really a continuation of previous novels, and concerns the murderer known as the Wolfman. His real name is...

Wentworth Inmates
Advantages: Action packed drama.
Disadvantages: Not shown often enough.
...History of Prisoner cell block H
One of the most watched Australian soaps, set inside a prison. Produced by Grundy television, and running for a total of 8 years with 692 episodes with each one lasting around 50 minutes. After the series was exported to America, the UK during 1987 decided to show it on ITV late at night. Over 10 million viewers tuned in to watch every episode. Prisoner cell block H is now celebrating its 25th Anniversary.
What?s it about
The series is set within Wentworth Detention Centre following the dramas and everyday life of the fellow inmates and officers. Exploring their crimes and mental states and adaptation behind bars. An exciting and powerful drama television series, with explosive and unique plotlines.

Sowing Your Oats!
Advantages: Tasty, dark and has a nice texture.
Disadvantages: Not many!
...When we go to Beer Festivals (as we seen to do from time to time) we like to try new beers. We also like to have a couple of beers we KNOW we like to drink when we get there while perusing the beer list to see what to have next. One such beer is Wentworth Oatmeal Stout. As people who know me realise, I am partial to the odd pint of stout and this particular one is a fine example.
~~~THE BREWERY.
Wentworth Brewery was first started in 1999 (September as it happens) by the landlord of a pub called the Commercial (located in the Chapletown area of Sheffield. The Brewery itself is based in Wentworth (not surprising really), which is near Rotherham in South Yorkshire, and can be found in the former power house of Wentworth Woodhouse Hall.
They brew a regular selection of eight beers and a few occasional or seasonal ones too...
