Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Let the great voice of Patti Labelle entertain you.

Advantages: Has many very good songs and is very well produced.
Disadvantages: A two page album sleeve.

Her style ranges from R & B right through to soul, disco and gospel. So it came as no surprise at all recently when a choir representing Philadelphia that she coached and mentored won NBC's TV show Clash Of The Choirs in which her choir easily defeated choirs mentored by Nick Lachey, Michael Bolton, Kelly Rowland and Blake Shelton. I'm not sure how useful these labels can be but she was part of the early 70's New York Punk scene and she has always displayed what later would be identified as the punk ethos in her music. After years earning a living as a music critic, playwright, songwriter, poet and actress She joined forces with guitarist and friend Lenny Kaye, Richard Sohl and Tom Verlaine to record a single 'Hey Joe' an adaptation of the old Jimi Hendrix hit. This is by many considered to be the first Punk Indie single. THE BOSS'S WIFE IS DOING IT FOR HERSELF!

Advantages: Enjoyable songs with a country/rock feel, no really poor tracks, good value.
Disadvantages: Not to everyone taste.

...And so here we have Mrs Springsteen, doing it for herself! I searched high and low for this CD which came out in 1993, and finally had to order it in. I felt that this couldn't have helped sales at the time, but then I might have missed the initial release! I first heard Patti Scialfa on my radio when my kids were small, she was singing 'Lucky Girl' and I used to sing along as I cooked the children their tea! I used to change the words to "I wish I had a Turkey Burger!" I know, don't say it? off her trolley! Ok! - no comments on junk food either please! I can't even see why I thought the lyrics sounded anything like it now! Anyway, the kids joined in and cleared their plates! "Horses" by Patti Smith always seems to feature prominently in those Greatest Albums Of All Time lists and most people who like the sort of music I like seem to love it. So why am I not jumping on one of the longest musical bandwagons going? Answer, it's just not a very good record. Dealing with the positives first. Musical pioneer John Cale produces the album and if anyone should be able to polish a turd it is him; having done such a good job of making Lou Reed sound so interesting back in 1967 on The Velvet Underground & Nico. Advantages: An incredibly distinctive female vocalist
Disadvantages: Some feel this album is a little over-produced

...Patti smith is a writer, poet, painter, performance artist and singer, and 'gung ho, released in 2000, is her third album since she returned from a temporary retirement. She is best remembered for her first album, 'Horses', which was released in 1975 and gave her a prominent position as a founder of punk, and has influenced many other performers. (Including my favourite band R.E.M.) Although her first album was released under the name of the Patti Smith Group, 'gung ho' is released under Patti's name only, but reunites many of the performers who helped make 'Horses' such a seminal work. Debut full of passion…

...The first time I came across Patti Smith was on the B.B.C. 2 music show “The Old Grey Whistle Test”, I can’t remember the year but I think it was round the middle of the 70’s. I remember she was strangely dressed for being on stage, wearing a big coat and hat on stage. I thought strange what’s all this about and then she proceeded to perform the track “Land” which is in 3 parts, horses, land of a 1,000 dances and La mer (de) nothing could have prepared me for the all out assault on the senses that Ms Smith performed. The performance that I witnessed was incredible; she was jumping up and down, throwing herself around the floor and this was for the full length of the song and runs at nearly 10 minutes long. After watching this on T.V. I thought to myself I got to get a copy of this album...
