Originally formed as Gregory Isaacs' backing band, Roots Radics also accompanied Yellowman, Sugar Minott, Frankie Paul and Bunny Wailer, and laid down some of Adrian Sherwood's best dub tracks. With Style Scott on drums, Flabba Holt on bass, Earl Fitzsimmons on keyboards and Bingy Bunny and Dwight Pickney on guitars, they were one of Jamaica's finest "one drop" bands. This dub version of their Hot We Hot album, originally released in 1989, kicks off with the Latin guitar of the eight-minute joyride "How Could I Dub?," one of two bonus tracks added for the CD version. Other cuts are more typical dub instrumentals, with the usual crashes and echoes. Augustus Pablo, who died just last year of a rare nerve disorder, didn't pass away without leaving us with some of the finest roots reggae ever committed to (seven-inch) wax. Culled mostly from his own Rockers imprint, this collection is expertly compiled and captures many of the man's finest moments without overtly repeating other already available compilations. A deeply religious man, Pablo's work was distinctive for its spiritual feel as well as its author's instrument of choice--the melodica. "Cassava Piece", one of his all-time classics, kicks the album off and is followed by the even more celebrated vocal version of the tune, "Baby I Love You So" featuring legendary vocalist Jacob Miller. Also featured are gems such as "555 Crown Street", "Rockers Rock", "Bongo Pat's Young Generation" and "Black Gunn". The Mad Professor started building his home studio in South London in the 1970s, when he first began to get fascinated by reggae. By the late 1980s he had enough equipment and enough knowledge to begin making a series of dub albums. The result was Dub Me Crazy, a collection of 12 albums that delivered plenty of classic single releases and made the Professor something of a household name in roots circles. This compilation showcases some of the best cuts from the series and showcases his idiosyncratic style of production. Percussive to the extreme, he fills his dubwise space with Perry-esque playfulness, endless echoes and smoke-filled reverb. Tracks like "Fast Forward Into Dub", "Freedom Chant", "Ska Land", "Raging Storm", "Your Rights, My Wrongs", "English Connection" and "African Connection" are all included here and are the perfect introduction for those who haven't yet discovered the sonic delights of the UK's favourite dubmaster. --Paul Sullivan

Professional tennis makes an unlikely but surprisingly effective backdrop for a lively romantic comedy in Wimbledon. Peter Cort (Paul Bettany, Master and Commander), once ranked 11th in the world, has slipped to 119th and is heading into his last Wimbledon tournament when he runs into Lizzie Bradbury (Kirsten Dunst, The Virgin Suicides, Spider-Man), a rising star. The two strike up a whirlwind romance that gives his game new life--but she insists it's going to be nothing but a passing fling. Their affair heats up and Cort finds himself steadily rising through the competition while Lizzie stumbles... Striking a balance between raunch and sweetness is a tall order for any film, but the Judd Apatow-produced Superbad manages to serve up both in equal and satisfying portions without undercutting a consistent stream of laugh-out-loud performances and gags.Michael Cera (the sublime George Michael Bluth from Arrested Development) and unstoppable scene-stealer Jonah Hill (Apatow's Knocked Up) are lifelong pals who attempt to make up for years of obscurity by getting into one blow-out party before parting ways for college. An opportunity presents itself in the form of Hill's crush, the lovely Jules (Emma Stone), who wants the boys to bring liquor to her shindig. What follows is a combination road adventure and coming of age story as Cera and Hill tackle crazed party goers, a pair of overeager cops (played by co-scripter and producer Seth Rogen and Saturday Night Live's Bill Hader), and the hard truth about girls and their own emotional bond.The humour is crass and occasionally gross but never mean-spirited, and Cera and Hill offer believable performances as guys wholly unaware of their own potential, yet ready to risk humiliation in order to find out. They're well supported by a cast of Apatow regulars, including Kevin Corrigan, Martin Starr, David Krumholtz, and Carla Gallo (and Stone and Martha MacIsaac are terrific as their love interests), but the film is completely shoplifted by newcomer Christopher Mintz-Plasse as their uber-nerdy pal Fogell, whose fake ID handle is among the film's funniest gags. Classic funk fans should also keep an ear out for the score by Lyle Workman, which features such James Brown and P-Funk veterans as Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, and Clyde Stubblefield. --Paul Gaita

Stunning computer-generated special effects are the main selling point of Dragon Wars, a Korean-made fantasy about ancient monsters wreaking havoc in modern Los Angeles. The complex plot, based on legend, pits an evil serpent and its demonic army against a young woman (Amanda Brooks) who is the reincarnation of a young woman imbued with the heaven-sent power to transform the creature into an all-powerful dragon. Jason Behr (The Grudge) is the reporter who discovers that he too is a reincarnated warrior bound to prevent Brooks and her power from falling into the wrong hands. The elaborate premise isn't helped by the script, which delivers absurd dialogue and situations with child-like naivete. Thankfully, the presence of Robert Forster (as another reincarnated hero) and solid actors like Elizabeth Pena, Craig Robinson and Chris Mulkey, help smooth over the frequent moments of unintentional humour. But this won't matte! r much to fantasy fans and (especially) younger viewers, who will tune in for the film's riot of special effects. Director Shim Hyung-rae and his talented team offer scene after scene of exceptional CGI creations, most notably an aerial dogfight between helicopters and winged lizards in the skies above downtown L.A., and a climactic battle which makes good on the title's promise. The DVD includes a making-of featurette which outlines Shim's four-year struggle to complete the project, as well as storyboard galleries and an animatics display. -- Paul Gaita END

A surprise hit when it was released in September 2005, The Exorcism of Emily Rose tells a riveting horror story while tackling substantial issues of religious and spiritual belief. It's based on the true story of Anneliese Michel, a German student who believed she was possessed by demons, and whose death during an attempted exorcism in 1976 led to the conviction of two priests on charges of negligent manslaughter. As director and cowriter (with Paul Harris Boardman), filmmaker Scott Derrickson adapts this factual case into a riveting courtroom drama in which questions of faith, and the possibility of demonic possession, take the place of provable facts in the case of Father Moore (superbly played by Tom Wilkinson). A small-town Catholic priest, Moore has been put on trial for the post-exorcism death of Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter), a college student who, like her real-life inspiration, believed she was suffering from demonic possession. As an agnostic defense attorney (Laura Linney) argues the father's case against a Methodist prosecutor (Campbell Scott), flashbacks reveal the exorcism ritual and Emily's ultimately fatal ordeal, and Carpenter's performance is so frighteningly effective that it's almost painful to watch. From here, the film remains deliberately ambiguous, leaving viewers to ponder their own belief (or lack of it) in the supernatural. It lacks the extreme shock value of The Exorcist, but by leaving room for doubt and belief in a legal context, The Exorcism of Emily Rose gains depth and resonance in a way that guarantees similar long-term appeal. --Jeff Shannon
