Van goes C&W again : Pay The Devil

Advantages: One or two fairly OK songs
Disadvantages: C&W, wailing violins, Hawaiian guitar, too long!

...At the beginning of 2006, Van Morrison took leave of his senses and released the album Pay The Devil which amazingly reached no.8 in March of that year, then re-entered at no.39 in April. This is the second album on which Van has gone C&W (the first was with Linda Gayle Lewis) and I have always wondered why he felt the need to repeat that genre. I suppose he has his own reasons! Most of the material on this album is Van covering other people's songs, and those which he wrote himself are Playhouse, Pay The Devil and This Has Got To Stop. I can't expostulate on this album in the normal way that I do about most of my no.1 music idol's work, as I'm afraid C&W as a musical genre is something I just never have developed an ear for. Review of Pay the Devil - Van Morrison

Change the World - Pay it Forward

Advantages: Somewhat original story, original concept, great performances, touching, makes you think
Disadvantages: A bit over sentimental for some (you'll need to be armed with tissues!)

...- Introduction - I first heard of the movie Pay It Forward through an interview with my favourite music group, the Backstreet Boys. My favourite member Brian has mentioned a few times in interviews that this was at least one of his favourite movies and otherwise, I hadn't heard of it. It came out in 2000 but I don't remember hearing anything about it on TV at the time (maybe I was busy then, I don't know) and so I guess it sort of slipped under my radar. Anyway, I was recently looking for DVDs of movies to purchase for watching over the festive holiday season and when I came across this title, I thought, from the little I'd heard of it, it sounded like it would make for quite a good movie to watch over Christmas and New Year. Amazon.co.uk are selling it pretty cheap at the moment, for £5.97 (plus about £1.24 for regular p&p costs...
