Peas please Louise
Advantages: taste good
Disadvantages: non e
...Peas please Louise,
I often have a packet of Tesco frozen garden peas in my freezer. I think the packaging must have changed since this category was added as it is not such a lush green pack anymore. The product the same just Tesco has updated the pack
These garden peas are available in 1kg pack and in a 1.8kg bag. The 1kg bag costs 1.63, the 1.8kg bag £2.82 (£1.57 per kg) so if you have room the bigger bag works out cheaper.
I find a bag of peas handy to keep in the freezer as I can easily use as many as I need at any time. Peas are often the vegetable that will be eaten by children. (except my grandson ) Peas go well as a vegetable accompaniment to most meals.
These Tesco garden peas are good ones, not hard bullet and tasteless. They are a fairly good bright green maybe not the smallest and sweetest frozen pea, but...

War and Peas
Advantages: Yummy peas
Disadvantages: Rubbish for making soup with
...a bit of carrot or a pint of stock whilst simultaneously maintaining an eerie ability to predict when a six year old would attempt to steal a biscuit:
"I'm going to hang the washing out now, Fiona. Both God and I have counted how many biscuits there are and neither of us will forgive you if there's one fewer when I come back."
Despite doubtlessly teeming with salmonella, the soup was pretty damn tasty. However, this was a soup that had clearly defined strata, and only the uninitiated (or foolhardy) delved down to the bottom. The top layer was tasty watery brothy stuff, the middle layer had carrots and potatoes and occasional bits of chicken in, and the bottom layer was comprised almost entirely of peas.
Now, when I say 'peas', you'll no doubt be thinking of the nice, bright green, sweet and tasty variety. My gran had no...

~Easy Pea-sy ~
Advantages: Delicious and very easy to grow
Disadvantages: You have to grow your own.
...I had never heard of the Asparagus Pea before and only came across it purely by chance whilst browsing a seed catalogue for suitable Kohl Rabi and Sweet Corn to grow this year.
The Asparagus Pea, or Tetronoglobus Purpurea to give its Sunday name, is not something you are likely to find in the supermarket or local greengrocers. I adore Asparagus and as the UK season lasts only 8 weeks, rather than have to buy the imported stuff from Peru, I thought these may well be worth trying to satisfy my taste for Asparagus.
They are not really a pea at all, but are in fact a vetch (that's a climbing plant with a bean like fruit for those not in the know), these are bushy plants bearing deep red flowers which appear in summer, followed by pale green curiously 4 sided shaped winged pods.
Whilst they are not really that common in Britain, they...

War and Peas
Advantages: Emotive storyline and great illustrations
Disadvantages: not for younger readers who may not understand the message
...War and Peas
I have been doing some work on WW2, and of course, out came this well thumbed book, drawing as it does on some of the aspects of war and negotiations in a light hearted way.
STORY AND ILLUSTRATIONS
The author of this book has illustrated many books by other authors, so it's a foregone conclusion as we read through the book that the illustrations will perfectly complement the text, and will be instantly appealing to children. In fact, as the author and illustrator wrote, he draws to make things more real; not in the literal, but in the emotional sense. If we remember this, then we know the kind of pictures we will get!
The story focuses on two kingdoms, one ruled by King Lion, and the other by the Fat King. Basically, King Lion's people have no food, and when their request for help goes unnoticed, war is declared...

Pea Please... Tesco Garden Peas
Advantages: Good Price, Last well in the freezer, good for use with many dishes.
Disadvantages: Secure the bag or they will spill into the freezer!!!
...I have found myself recently tending to use a lot more packets of peas whilst cooking meals. Where before I tended to use them when cooking a traditional roast dinner, I have found myself now adding them to a variety of dishes such as cottage pies, curry and Balti dishes as well as a simple accompaniment to meals. I used to buy the Tesco value range of peas and just keep a bag that would last a while in my freezer but on a recent shop I discovered that there were none left so I 'upgraded' to the Tesco Garden Pea bag!
This range of peas is available in 2 different sizes. There is the 1kg bag which will cost you £1.48 or there is the slightly larger bags which will set you back £2.52. I think the size decision is not only down to money but how much room you have in your freezer, as I have limited space I decided to opt...

SUPER VALUE MUSHY PEAS
Advantages: Very Tasty
Disadvantages: Nothing really
...Tesco value Mushy Peas
They come in Tescos, by now, easily recognisable red, white and blue labelled tin.
Tried these the other night. My wife likes salmon but I find salmon tasteless so I had some yellow fish. Two big pieces and a whole tin of Mushy Peas.
These are not the best Mushy Peas on the market but still a decent product. Probably comes somewhere in the Middle of the range.
Takes about 10 minutes in the pan, I like to cook them very slowly. But watch them carefully or they can easily burn or stick to the pan even a non stick pan! They are a almost luminous green in colour and to start with a bit runny but after ten minutes heat they begin to get a proper thickness to their texture. Once you have them very gently bubbling then they are good to go.
The smell does have a good 'Pea' smell to...

The Fragrant Sweet Pea
Advantages: A fragrant bloom
Disadvantages: None
...A Sweet Pea is a highly scented annual and has to be one my my all time favourite flowers. Although you can buy the seed and raise your own plants in the greenhouse, which I did last year, most of us prefer to buy the plants from our local garden centre.
The Sweet pea starts life as a small thin straggly plant, it may look very puny but in reality it is an exceptionally resilient little plant.
Sweetpeas love being planted where they will be in the sun and last year during March I planted mine at the bottom of the garden along the bottom of the fence. The results were spectacular, the spindly plants soon gained strength and started to take hold. We made a good framework out of bamboo canes and garden twine for them to climb. As the plants start to grow make sure that you encourage them to twine up along and through the twine and Sweet...

I need a Pea!
Advantages: Nothing better than Peas fresh from the garden
Disadvantages: None
...Peas are annuals that grow from 45cm (18in) to over 2m (6ft) tall, with an average spread of 23cm (9in). Plants cling to supports with tendrils; modern semi-leafless types are almost self-supporting. Peas are grouped according to the time taken to mature. The early groups are dwarfer and lower yielding. Pods are usually green but there are purple-podded cultivars.
Shelling-pea types are grown for the fresh peas in the pods; some may be dried. Petit pois are small, fine flavoured peas. Wrinkle-seeded cultivars are usually sweeter but less hardy than the smooth-seeded types. Edible-podded types (mangetout, sugar peas) are eaten before the peas mature. Mangetout types are flat-podded and eaten young; the round-podded sugar types are used when semi-mature. Peas and pods are usually cooked, but may be eaten raw.
Peas are a cool...

Peas sir - I want some more
Advantages: Cheap, tasty, great consistency
Disadvantages: Packaging is nasty - but does this really matter?
...Mushy peas are a great addition to fish and chips but I find making my own a real nightmare. Realistically homemade mushy peas will be made from frozen peas mixed with some vinegar and sugar and blitzed with a blender. Whilst I can get the right consistency I can never get the taste right, therefore the only option I have is to buy some.
Finding good mushy peas is not an easy task, although my other half managed to stumble across the Tesco Value branded ones during a shopping trip and after trying them we have never looked back.
Packaging
These peas come in a tin (obviously) with the very distinctive white, red and blue ?Tesco Value? colour scheme. The label shows a picture of the peas as well as all the relevant nutritional information.
Just like all value branded packaging and labels, it is not attractive...

Sweetly smelling peas.
Advantages: Fragrances the house
Disadvantages: Don't last long as a cut flower
...What reminds you of summer? For me one of the things that reminds me of summer are the flowers in the garden, the perfume that lingers on the air as the long days turn to dusk and a velvety night falls.
I do like to be outside in the evenings watching the sun go down and the moon, sometimes a huge golden globe in the sky rise, to light the garden with little pools of brightness in the dark.
One of the scents of summer for me is the very sweet perfume of Sweet Peas, or Lathyrus odoratus, to give them their proper name.
So, what are they?
Little round green things, eaten with a knob of butter and roast lamb on Sundays? No, 'fraid not.
Sweet Peas are flowers.
Lathyrus odoratus is the Latin name they are known by. They are related to the pea that we eat, the plants growing in similar conditions and similar ways. In...
