...'Australasia', the second full length by curiously named US sludge merchants Pelican, is an interesting exercise in progressive metal that merges the post-rock musings of 'Oceanic' era Isis with the weighty, pounding, wall-of-sound riffs championed by sludge pioneers Neurosis, backing the whole thing up with crunchy, groove-drenched, slowed-down Mastodon riffs. Most of the songs approach ten minutes in length, and the main theme of the album is momentum, which ebbs and flows throughout, slowing to a crawl and gradually building sludgy riff upon sludgy riff, increasing in tempo before plateauing upon reaching a deep, bass-heavy groove. Elsewhere the sound is more lethargic, coming on in endless, crashing waves to the accompaniment of gentle, transient, searching guitar melodies, whilst other parts give way to semi-acoustic guitars...

...I watched this film last night and was motivated to write a review of it as not many people know what it's about. ‘The Pelican Brief ‘is based on the book by John Grisham. It is a really well made film, which builds up tension so well and has you at the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. Julia Roberts plays a smart-arse law student Darby Shaw. She is in a relationship with her tutor Thomas Callahan. In the news they hear about two Supremes being killed. Darby decides to write a brief about who the suspects of the murders could be. She nearly throws it away as she’s not happy with it, however Callahan reads it and shows to a friend in the FBI (just as a laugh!). However Thomas is killed by a car bomb and Darby soon realises it was meant to kill her. This of course means her theory must be...

How To Brief A Pelican

Advantages: Good solid story that flows along nicely. Character Development is very well done
Disadvantages: Not knowing what shes actually found out until well into the book

...As I’ve mentioned in previous ops reading never used to be something I was really into. In fact it wasn’t until about a year after I left school that I really started to read regularly and it was a book by John Grisham that really got me started. This wasn’t the one but after reading one of his books I felt that I had to make an effort to try and read pretty much everything he had written. And so I came to the Pelican Brief, the 3rd Novel he wrote. The main aspect of Grisham’s work is that he is writing about a field he has a great deal of experience and knowledge in. All his books in one way or another are based on either down on their luck poor lawyers or law students. However don’t let this put you off, Grisham is an expert in this field and somehow manages to make these types of book seem intriguing...

...This is the third John Grisham book I've read in a month. I reckon its the best too. They're all so different as well, which is pretty amazing because I thought law was pretty much all the same. Oh well. This story starts with the rather professional assassination of two Supreme Court Justices. One was a 91 year old that everyone hated, so that one was obvious, but the other one didn't seem to be particularly radical or hated. So, the White House, the FBI and the CIA get in a bit of a flap. Then Darby Shaw, a brilliant law student in New Orleans skips classes for four days searching for a solution. I gather she's a bit of a bird as well. Well, she writes up her findings in a brief - the Pelican Brief - and shows it to her Professor Thomas Callahan - who she happens to be nailing - and although she dismisses it, he gives it to a friend...

Latte pelican make your coffee

Advantages: Simple to use, perfect results

This has a nineteen bar pump pressure and a four holed nozzle meaning that the milk can be steamed and frothed effortlessly (no having to listen for the right sound, or moving the jug up and down and round and around). Nespresso refer to the Magimix as the Pelican. This is due the large opening jaw at the front into which the pods are inserted. The machine is mainly chrome with the jaw a contrasting black. The glass water tank holds 1.2ltr and is situated at the back of this machine. This is easily re-filled through the top and can equally easily be removed for washing. The most important thing with any coffee machine is of course the quality of the drink it makes. I have so far made espressos...

Advantages: very gripping and involving plot, great acting, strong cast and script, interesting interpretation of the book
Disadvantages: heavy legal jargon and fast moving plot - can often get lost along the way

Another fantastic array of characters holds interest like few other authors can achieve. Derby is joined in her turmoil by a newspaper reporter who believes her and helps her to reveal the Pelican Brief. The two hide and investigate to uncover top level goings on and endeavor to bring down the government. Another best seller from Grisham to keep his fans absorbed....

...development. Apart from being a number 3 single, the track made a swift reappearance on February?s album, Pelican West. The fact that it was sequenced to follow Favourite Shirts, the album?s opening track, was no coincidence, since these were the highlights of a somehat one-paced set that nevertheless peaked at number 2 in the albums chart. The frothy Fantastic Day which was a number 9 single was also included. All in all, Haircut 100 were teenybop pap that quickly fell out of sight and left a fairly patchy album to remember them by....

As an advid fan of John Grisham novels, I was delighted that the Pelican Brief lived up to his usual high standards. It is a slight deviation for Grisham, as it deals with politics in the big bad world, instead of the politics of a courtroom drama. This book tells the story of a law student's nightmarish journey into the seedy underbelly of American politics by stumbling across the truth behind the murders of two Supreme Court Justices, whilst writing a brief on a news story.
