THE ULTIMATE GUIDE OF PENANG!
Advantages: Dirt Cheap, Food, Beach, All in an Island
Disadvantages: Taxi, dirty surroundings on some parts, traffic
...NAME
Penang Island a.k.a Pearl of the Orient. Locally, it is known as Pulau Pinang. It is named after the Pinang Tree ( a small tree which looks much like a coconut tree but everything is rather small, from the top till the bottom and to the fruits. Fruit is not edible.) The island was named after it due to the excess growth of these plants many years back.
During the 1990?s, Penang was famous throughout Malaysia as it was rated by the government to be one of the dirtiest and filthiest places. It was then given a nickname as ?RUBBISH Island?! The state government then managed to struggle to keep the island clean and 10 years later, the nickname was lifted. The Pearl is starting to shine now. Penang?s mascot would be the leatherback turtle, but I have never seen it in Penang in my life before. I...

Penang - A trip back in time
Advantages: Excellent holiday destination
Disadvantages: none
...A trip to Penang is like a trip back in time. Penang has the highest number of historical buildings in Malaysia and is home to the famous E&O Hotel, which was built in the late 19th century by two Armenian brothers, who were traders during the time when Penang ws an important spice trading island in the Far East.
Walk down any of the streets such as Chulia street, Armenian Street, Cannon Street or Love Lane, and it will show you the splendour of Penang's past in the form of its lovely old and ornate structures which once housed prominent European families or wealthy Chinese traders and even some portion of the small jewish community that once held a place there.
A good way to experience this 'old world' feeling is to first take time out to visit the Penang Museum which houses an excellent record of what life was like in the time...

...hectares Forest Recreation Park which also serves as a centre of research for botany and zoology. A Museum houses exhibits of tropical timber and there are also freshwater pools, foothpaths, rest huts and a kiddies playground.
Make a visit to the Kek Lok Si-the largest Buddhist Temple Complex in Malaysia. The temple is dominated by the seven-tier Ban Po Thar pagoda which rises some 30 metres. The remple is at Air Itam.
Finally set aside some time for a trip up Penang Hill, which at 830 metres high,is a pleasant 3 or 4 degrees C cooler than the lowlands. Journey to the top in the funicular railway-the views from the peak over Georgetown are magnificent.!...

Penang Vs langkawi
Advantages: Langkawi is unspoilt
Disadvantages: penang does not have good beaches
...Penang is billed as a spectacular beach destination. But its polluted sea and Small beaches can be a disappointment. But what makes Penang worth visiting the historic capital Georgetown. The enthusiastic tourists board reckons it rivals Rome, which is a bit over the top. But Georgetown's collection of ornate temples, colonial forts and old Chinese buildings make it one of Malaysia's most interesting cities. The best hotels are in the resort strip of Batu Ferringhi, with Rasa Sayang, Mutiara and Golden Sands top of the pile. If you want unspoilt tropical paradise, look north to Langkawi, but if you like to get off your sunlounger for a bit of culture, Penang could be for you. currency is the Ringgit its climate isTropical without extremely high temperatures. Days are very warm, while nights are fairly cool. The main rainy season runs...

Penang's Little India
Advantages: Exotic. Colourful.
Disadvantages: Noisy. The smells are powerful
...Penang is a cosmopolitan place and an interesting ethnic quarter is "Little India" which is the area around Market Street, This street is a colourful cacophony of sounds, sights and smells. In this enclave you will come across incense,a wide variety of spices, ancient Indian medicines, flower garlands, sarees, textiles, and pictures of the Bollywood film stars. Hindi films, and to a lesser extent,Tamil films are very, very, popular in Penang.
Most of the shops here are operated by Hindus but in adjacent area there are Indian Muslim shops.Among the local Penang Tamils,Market street is called Kadai Teru which means "Street of Shops" but the British during the Colonial era knew it as "Chola Place".Sometimes it was called "Little Madras".
Little India,I should add,is a great place not only for shopping but also for eating. Here you will find...

Home Sweet Home
Advantages: Good and Cheap Food
Disadvantages: To Much Traffic & Pollution
...Where Is Penang?
Oh...Penang! My sweet Penang. It has been about six months now since I left home. For those who are unaware about Penang, it is one of the 13 states in Malaysia. It is located in the north of Peninsular Malaysia between Perak and Kedah, two other states. Penang consists of one part Island and the other part Mainland connected by a 13.5KM long bridge that used to be the longest bridge in Asia 10 years ago.
The History
Penang was founded by Sir Francis Light. Sir Francis Light was also the person who founded Adelaide in Australia. He fooled the Sultan of Kedah, where Penang used to belong to in promising to provide Military aid against Thailand. He never kept his promise and further acquired the small part of the mainland opposite the island as security reasons to prevent attacks from the Sultan of Kedah. Penang later...

Malaysia
Advantages: Beautiful beaches. Great shops at night great fun, forests too
Disadvantages: hot/humid/polluted
...Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia is great for all tourists, in this very hot climate there are excellent hotels. There are great shops and things are very cheap, technology is pretty good too.
Strange things were seen when exploring Malaysia, shops sellings testicles, yes i did say what you just read, Kangaroo testicles etc. I wont go into detail what else they were selling because you get the idea.
I just said the last part to throw a huge contrast of Malaysia=let me explain, basically Malaysia is a great tourist destination because it has great sites like the worlds tallest towers - The twin towers in Kuala lumpur - I went there and trust me its very high, but for some reason they dont let you go right to the top! - and if any one was wondering yes you travel by elevator not stairs.
The two towers are joined by a central...

Welcome to Malaysia!!!
Advantages: lots of attractions, nice people, wonderful foods and wonderful country
Disadvantages: sometimes you may not stand the hot and humidity...
...". There are few exotic islands such as Langkawi, Pulau Perhentian, Redang, Pangkor, Tioman and others popular with natural white sand beaches, lush jungle foliage and craggy mountain peaks--but hampered by inaccessibility.
Penang
Penang is one of Asia's most famous islands with a natural beauty and exotic heritage have been attracting curious visitors for centuries. It's a place of mysterious temples and palm-shrouded beaches, while literary giant Somerset Maugham is known to have stayed on the island and spun tales about the romance of the white planter in South-East Asia.
Penang today is very much an amalgam of the old and the new city with a bustling port, a heritage city and an industrial base. Penang is the only Chinese-majority state in Malaysia.
Foods
We come to my best and favorite part of all. Well I'm hungry now thinking...

Malaysia Airlines, sets the benchmark for other airlines!
Advantages: Very hospitable, great customer service, no delays, no fuss, very welcoming
Disadvantages: You won't want to leave the plane!!
...of bubbly and box of chocolates. Its clear that all of their staff take a real genuine pride in customer service.
We've always booked directly with the airline and have found them to be the cheapest on every occasion for a direct flight. The flight takes around 12/13 hours and a return has been priced as low as £340, whilst the most we've ever paid is £550. You may find cheaper direct flights with Airasia.com, but this airline are the equivalent to Easyjet and you'll pay for meals and other bits and bobs on board. Additionally, they fly from Stansted and not Heathrow. I've not flown with Air Asia and can't vouch for their service.
There was a time when if you booked directly with MAS they would give you a free internal flight in Malaysia. We've taken this offer up twice to hop on from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi or Penang. I'm not sure if this...
