No telly? Match of the day? Aaargh
Advantages: Quiet, idyllic location, good staff
Disadvantages: No telly!
...in the Lake District at 200-odd metres. Ok so where's the lake? Well it's in the North Lakes, about 10 miles from Penrith. If you're on the M6, take the turn-off for Shap and it's about 6 miles of winding road later. If you're not on the M6 I can only suggest you're lost. Shap, if it doesn't ring alarm-bells, should. It's quite a godforsaken place where it always rains. If anyone from shap writes to me complaining, then it is because the rain has addled your brain and depression has led to erratic complaining about well known fact. I did a lot of geology around Shap because of its famous granite - it's the very pink one people have for worktops - and ALWAYS spent the time huddled in a corner trying to light a fag in a force 10 gale. The journey from Shap to the hotel takes you down a lot of windy roads where a tom-tom is necessary, though...

Home of Lilliput Lane
Advantages: A lovely place and a lovely hobby
Disadvantages: None
...Penrith to me means only one thing and that’s Lilliput Lane, because that’s where the studio is based. I will begin my opinion with an apology to those of you who were expecting an opinion about Penrith in general, but there was no other suitable category for this so I have decided to put it here.
Penrith is in Cumbria and is known as the Gateway to the Lakes, being as it is, on the edge of the Lake District. The Lilliput Lane studio is easy to find as it is just off the Penrith exit of the motorway.
I began collecting Lilliput Lane cottages when I moved into my current house in 1989 and my parents bought me a cottage called Inglewood as a housewarming present. It started a hobby that has grown and grown. I now have over 100 cottages and am fast running out of space to house them all.

Dogs really are welcome!
Advantages: Superb location
Disadvantages: A little too quiet for some
...(I originally posted the first draft of this on trivago.co.uk under bean372042)
The Hotel Glenridding is set in a beautiful location right next to Lake Ullswater near Penrith Cumbria, when I say right next to, if you walk more than 30 paces from the car park, you will fall in! It is set in an extremely quiet village with a couple of shops and tearooms and little or no nightlife, however, that is not what this holiday is about. The area hasn't been tainted with the tourist brush quite yet. It still retains charm and peace.
The hotel itself is a quaint mix of old and new architecture and has 36 rooms including four posters, lake views, family suites and large corner rooms available for a supplement (aprox £25 per night)
Reception/lounge and bar area.
Walking through the large front door you immediately come to the above area...

And Then I Kneed Mr Big In The Balls?
Advantages: Interesting arrangement (man made for the Olympics), not too far to get to, or too expensive
Disadvantages: The trip you get depends on your raft leader and raft mates, over which you have little control
..."Arse Wax" yelled Kate a split second before the raft flipped and the group of us were spent spiralling into the water.
My Australian flatmates seem constantly surprised by me, for all sorts of random things. For example, I'm British but until last week had never seen a movie version of Pride and Prejudice. I grew up near Blackpool, but I don't like roller coasters. Here's another one: I'm scared of log flumes. That moment at the top when you pause before coming hurtling back down the chute? Scary. And yet?last weekend I agreed to go White Water Rafting.
Penrith is home to a set of man-made rapids, created especially for the Kayak event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. It's an hour from Sydney by train, and is close to the edge of the Blue Mountains. Penrith itself, however, is not very picturesque. In fact, the main thing we...

Impossible to get bored here!!!!
Advantages: Excellent facilities and accommodation
Disadvantages: A bit pricey
...Introduction
Having visited the Center Parcs complex at Whinfell Forest a couple of times over the last 12 months I found the place has a lot to offer especially for those of us with kids. The park itself is set in a large pine forest which includes a variety of both indoor and outdoor activities and all the accommodation.
Location
The park is situated on the outskirts of the lake district about 10 miles from Penrith.
How to get there by road
M6 Junction 40 follow the A66 east toward Brough. At roundabout continue on the A66 towards Appleby/Brough. Center Parcs Whinfell Forest entrance is about 3 miles along the A66 on the right hand side.
Accommodation
Each type of accommodation has a kitchen, an open plan living and dining area, bedroom/s, bathroom/s and either a patio or balcony with outdoor furniture. Bed linen...

A forest in the lakes
Advantages: RELAXING, MOD CONS, PLENTY TO DO
Disadvantages: EXPENSIVE PRICES
...staying in a two bedroom lodge fri-mon and was in the basic lodges classed as comfort, this means that no maid service is provided and no towels. This was not too much of a problem as we were only there for a short period of time anyway.
Oven Gloves, Tea towels are all the basics that are not provided so if you are planning to eat in your own lodge then you are likely to require the following:-
Tea towels
Oven Gloves
Kitchen Roll
Toilet Rolls
Towels
Washing Up Liquid as only a small sachet is provided although they do provide a dishcloth and brillo pad.
There is a supermarket on site also to purchase all the staple goods but we visited the Morrisons in Penrith just 10 minutes away to save us a bit of money on shopping at least forthe basics like bbq ingredients and roasting joints and vegetables.

Gateway to the Lakes
Advantages: Close to the Lake District
Disadvantages: Maybe be strategicallyplace so it rains more than any where else in England
...Penrith is a small historic market town with a population of around 15,000 situated just of the M6 motorway. Due to its location is is often used as one of the main enternaces to the northern Lake District. This small town offers a wide range of local conviniences for both tourists an locals alike. Penrith makes an idea base for holiday makes due to its situation about 25 miles south of the scottish border and just outside the Lake district National Park, with the A66 dual carrageway running past Penrith linking the West coast of Cumbria with Newcastle and Tyneside.
Places to visit
Just outside is Rheged Discovery Center, an underground all weather tourist attraction. Rheged is named after the Celtic Kingdom which lay where Cumbria is now. It offers the unique chance to view an exciting film on the legends of Cumbrian history...
