Horton Hears a Who?

Advantages: Great family movie with a great message

...Horton Hears a Who? Horton Hears a Who is the new animated film adaption of the Dr. Seuss book of the same name. Jim Carrey stars as Horton, an elephant who leads a pretty nice life in the jungle. One day he happens upon a dust speck that lands on a clover. In credibly he thinks he hears a voice coming form the speck, and lo and behold, he is right. It is the voice of Ned McDodd the Mayor of Whoville. Whoville is a small, microscopic I guess you could call it, town with lots of inhabitants. The mayor alone has 96 daughters and one son. The mayor is played by Steve Carell (he played the part of David Brent in the US version of the Office and was also in the movie 40 year old Virgin) In my opinion he is really good in this role and makes the character believable. I think Jim Carrey is great though as he always plays an outlandish part...

...Horton Hears a Who is a film which has been based on very popular book by Dr Seuss. As my 6 year old is a fan of the books I decided to treat him to the film. I will admit I have now watched it twice as I wanted to watch it on my own with no interruptions first! The film stars an elephant named Horton, voiced by Jim Carrey, who lives in the jungle of Nool. He has many friends and spends his day teaching the children. One day when he is having a bath in the river he hears a noise which seems to be coming from a tiny speck. Horton follows the noise and manages to catch the speck on a flower. No one believes him when he tells them and tells him to stop being so silly and to stop making the children believe daft things. Who Hears Horton?

Advantages: Lots of gags, great animation, strong voice cast, lots of adventures.
Disadvantages: Odd cast end credits singalong.

...Horton is a kindly elephant who thinks he hears a voice coming from a tiny speck. The voice belongs to the Whos, a minuscule race of people led by the Mayor of Whoville. Horton decides to protect the Whos and their home, but this leads to no end of problems. No-one else believes there really are people on the speck because they can't see them and the Mayor of Whoville has a similar problem convincing his townsfolk of the existence of a giant altruistic elephant. Soon Horton is being ridiculed by the other inhabitants of the jungle, especially the snooty kangaroo who wants to stifle everyone's imagination. So will Horton stick to his belief that "a person is a person, no matter how small"? Blue Sky studios are to Pixar what Warner Bros Animation was to Disney; the anarchic younger cousin more interested in cracking jokes than painting...

Horton Hears A Who

Advantages: Hilarious! Great animation and ideas.
Disadvantages: Carrey can be a bit annoying.

...Horton is a large and bumbling elephant who spends his days teaching the other baby animals about nature. Voiced by Jim Carrey, he is basically exactly what you'd expect from any character related to Carrey; Exciteable and almost permanently delighted! One day a small spec floats past him and he hears what he thinks are little screams coming from it. Instantly curious, he attempts to communicate with the spec, eventually getting into contact with the Mayor of Whoville, a city that just happens to be inside the spec! At first the Mayor thinks the whole thing is a prank, but eventually believes what Horton is saying - and realises thhat Whoville is in danger. SO, it's up to Horton to take the spec to somewhere safe where the Whos can live without being disturbed. But of course, it's not that easy and there are many obstacles in the way...

Peter Kaye: volume 1?

Advantages: Funny family chap
Disadvantages: No celeb stuff

...The book, like the retro comic in question, is a simple and honest read. No long words or pretentious reasoning, just one man telling his story. They say you should only write what you know, and that is exactly what Peter has done here, quite literally! Everything he ever did, however mundane, seems to have ended up in this book, and for that reason alone I don?t think this will appeal to all, especially as he doesn?t include his rise to fame and celebrity, the reason why most people would spend a preposterous £18.95 on it, the autobiography abruptly coming to halt just as we get going. Maybe its part one of his autobiography. Who knows? Maybe he feels guilty about his fame and fortune and by telling more funny stories on his homely normal life is enough for the Jolly Bolton boy for now, working class guilt getting the better of him...

...This is one of those films that nobody else seems to have heard of and - up until a few years ago - neither had I. Indeed, I have my passion for 1980s pop music to thank for my knowledge that this film even exists. For reasons I don't even remember, I came across a website listing the lyrics to Tears For Fears' mid-eighties hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World and whichever page I viewed mentioned a variety of films, TV programmes and albums that the song featured in. One of these was Peter's Friends . . . so I admit it, I first watched this film because one of my favourite songs was part of the soundtrack! (I can sometimes be a bit more shallow than other people believe . . . actually there are quite a few 1970s/1980s songs in here, which I think suits the mood of the film.) Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging.
