Review of Dead Man's Footsteps - Peter James

Who is possessed?

Advantages: Lots of mystery and suspense
Disadvantages: Story lacked direction and was very confusing

...Background: I have seen, heard and even read a great deal about Peter James without even picking up any of his novels. So I decided it was time I corrected this, as everything I heard about him and his novels was positive. When I was in the library the other day I saw this one so I decided it was time I corrected this state of affairs. About the author: Peter James was born in England in 1948 and educated at Charterhouse school. He is a very successful author and two of his books have been transferred very successfully into films. He has written 17 novels plus five in the Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series. The book I am reviewing was written in 1988. Synopsis of the book: Fabian Hightower is killed along with two friends in a car accident when returned to England from France. Meanwhile his mother Alex...

Review of Possession - Peter James

With friends like Peter's . . .

Advantages: Easy watching, some good acting and great vocal performances
Disadvantages: Acting from some of the cast is a bit over-the-top

...This is one of those films that nobody else seems to have heard of and - up until a few years ago - neither had I. Indeed, I have my passion for 1980s pop music to thank for my knowledge that this film even exists. For reasons I don't even remember, I came across a website listing the lyrics to Tears For Fears' mid-eighties hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World and whichever page I viewed mentioned a variety of films, TV programmes and albums that the song featured in. One of these was Peter's Friends . . . so I admit it, I first watched this film because one of my favourite songs was part of the soundtrack! (I can sometimes be a bit more shallow than other people believe . . . actually there are quite a few 1970s/1980s songs in here, which I think suits the mood of the film.) In a way, I find it surprising that Peter's Friends seems to...

Review of Peter's Friends (DVD)

Denial, the truth will out

Advantages: A gripping read. Very well written
Disadvantages: Couldn't put it down!

...**Review of 'Denial' by Peter James** I am reviewing the paperback version of 'Denial' not an audio book. Denial is a gripping thriller by UK author, Peter James. His work has been likened to that of Stephen King and Michael Crichton by the Sunday Express newspaper's literary critic, personally I feel the novel 'Denial' is far superior to those of other thriller writers. The plot is intense, it twists and turns and gives the reader surprises aplenty. There are several gruesome, gut wrenching passages which are wholly appropriate to the storyline, not gratuitous or overly violent, but nonetheless horrifyingly real. **The plot** Thomas Lamark is the only child of has-been actress, Gloria Lamark. Gloria's acting career has nose-dived, she is no longer in demand for movie roles, her once loyal fan base has faded and her...

Review of Denial - Peter James

Dead or alive?

Advantages: Another compelling read from Peter James
Disadvantages: Coincidences a bit too extreme

...or three pages. This is very much a feature of Peter James' work, and something that, in the past, I have really enjoyed. In this book, it began to annoy me a little. Just as I was given a piece of relevant information to savour, I would have to work my way through chapters, albeit short ones, about people that I didn't really care about. On the plus side, this did mean that I found it hard to put the book down, which I am sure is the purpose. I am just concerned that James is trying to fit in so many people's points of view that he is diluting the story - in this respect, it reminds me very much of Jodi Picoult's work. The story is, as ever with Peter James, a good one. The concept of organ smuggling is not a new one - I have watched a number of films that are based around it - but nevertheless, I like the way that Peter James has dealt...

Review of Dead Tomorrow - Peter James

INCESTUAL MOTHER WITH MURDEROUS SON!

Advantages: Excellent reading, Superb author, English based
Disadvantages: None

...I never used to be a big book reader; instead I was more of a magazine reader. I subscribed to many magazines, and then they just got thrown. Now however I have discovered the joy of books, and after you’ve read them you can pass them on or sell them at car boots. My first book by peter James was called Faith (see review), and it got me hooked, it was the type of book you just couldn’t put down. The second of my Peter James books that I have read was called ‘Denial’. Denial tells the tale of a man whose mother is a fading actress-Thomas Lamark. His mother Gloria starred in film with the likes of Clark Gable and her house is a shrine to her stardom: Filled to the brim with pictures of her in her starring roles. Thomas doesn’t know his father, but adores his mother! His mother is not your run of the mill mother, she belittles him...

THE DOCTOR WILL KILL YOU NOW!

Advantages: Gripping, exciting especially at the end
Disadvantages: see review

...As many of you know, I have only just got into reading! In fact I have only read about five or six books in total. Four of those have been by the same author ? Peter James. He?s books are brilliantly portrayed and totally believable, thus making them thoroughly enjoyable. So with my latest encounter in the book department from Peter James (although the book itself is actually out of print) what did I read. ●● The Plot ●● Sally Donaldson has died, and been buried in a graveyard in Sussex (Brighton is where the story is set), however all is not well as many people have heard noises coming from her grave as they have walked past it, including the vicar! So following the proper protocol an order is given for an exhumation. A local journalist has been put on the case along with several others from...

Review of Twlight - Peter James

HAUNTED BY HER SON

Advantages: Good read
Disadvantages: not as good as others

...Since my commencement of reading a year or so ago, the main author of my attention has been Peter James. I have had a change from time to time, but without doubt my most read author is the aforementioned. Why do I like Peter James? Easy, he’s style of writing is very readable, and his storylines are totally believable (so far). He writes with a passion that so far I haven’t encountered elsewhere, and with an understanding of his subject that is second to none! Peter James obviously knows he’s subject matter in each book, and seems a highly intelligent person (some of his books have been made into films and he also co-runs another business). He’s style of writing will have you gripped and watching over your shoulder in case what he writes is happening. Reading his books will make you feel part of the story, it will have you...

Review of Possession - Peter James

Devil worship, sexual connotations and murder

Advantages: An absolutely brilliant, gripping read, excellent choices of characters
Disadvantages: How the hell do you pronounce Kundz?

...Browsing the library shelves a couple of weeks ago I came across this book by Peter James. To start with I wasn't going to get it out as I'd never heard of the author before and the cover looked to me like it was going to turn out to be a spy novel of some description. That day I was in a rush and didn't have a lot of time to choose my books so I grabbed this one along with a couple of Dean R Koontz novels and dashed out. The Koontz' books were as ever a superb read but one night when I was struck down with a particularly bad case of insomnia (two full nights of no sleep - David Blaine, you ain't the only one to do endurance tests!) I'd finished the last Koontz book and read all the magazines in the house so I thought I'd bite the bullet and give Peter James a try. Somewhere during the first chapter I was hooked. The book...

Review of The Truth - Peter James

Have faith...?

Advantages: thrilling, hard to put aside
Disadvantages: none

...Author Peter James was born in 1948 and is one of the best known thriller authors in the UK by now. Up to today he has written 14 books, the last ones "Not Dead Enough" and "Dead Man's Footsteps". Two of his books have already been made into movies, and there are plans to do more. Right now James has residences in Brighton and London. Characters Faith: a good-looking woman in her mid-thirties; seems to have everything, but is really unhappy with her marriage Ross: Faith's husband; one of London's leading plastic surgeons, whose strive for perfection causes many problems not only in his marriage with Faith Alec: their 7 year old son, because of whom Faith is afraid to leave Ross, as she fears that he could take him away from her Dr. Oliver Cabot: head of a medical centre that concentrates on alternative...
