With friends like Peter's . . .

Advantages: Easy watching, some good acting and great vocal performances
Disadvantages: Acting from some of the cast is a bit over-the-top

...This is one of those films that nobody else seems to have heard of and - up until a few years ago - neither had I. Indeed, I have my passion for 1980s pop music to thank for my knowledge that this film even exists. For reasons I don't even remember, I came across a website listing the lyrics to Tears For Fears' mid-eighties hit Everybody Wants To Rule The World and whichever page I viewed mentioned a variety of films, TV programmes and albums that the song featured in. One of these was Peter's Friends . . . so I admit it, I first watched this film because one of my favourite songs was part of the soundtrack! (I can sometimes be a bit more shallow than other people believe . . . actually there are quite a few 1970s/1980s songs in here, which I think suits the mood of the film.) The Magic of Peter Pan

Advantages: Lots of special features and a great movie

Main Characters of the Film Peter Pan - Voice provided by Bobby Driscoll Disney does show but slightly plays down Peter's mischievous nature that is more apparent in other adaptations. He is after all a child who lives for the adventure of Never Land. He is respected by many in Never Land including Tinker Bell, the mermaids, Tiger Lily and the Lost Boys. PETER PAN FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Advantages: Great story, wonderful fx, heart warming
Disadvantages: Minor complaints re some fx

...of a character determined never to grow up. Rachel Hurd Wood was also new to me and her full lips and cherubic face are destined to set a few hearts a flutter when she grows older. She appeared suitably vunerable as the eventual heroine of the piece complimenting the main male parts with a feminine sense of adventure. Special mention must go to Richard Briers as Smee who got most of the laughs with some lovely one-liners that made myself and the audience smile. It was great to hear a super score that accompanied the movie. Credit to James Howard Newton for some wonderful work whilst Coldplay get a feature with the irony induced ?Clocks? (think crocodiles) The quality of the work in Peter Pan is undeniable. St Peter's Church, Edensor

Advantages: Lots of history, beautiful setting
Disadvantages: Not everyone's ideal place to visit

The entrance to this is best accessed via Japp Lane and the spire of this Church can be seen from many miles away. This Church was built in 1870 and was originally created as a place of worship for the Duke of Devonshire, his family and his staff. Today the current Duke and Duchess still use this Church as their regular place of worship and they can often be found here during Sunday service. For such a relatively modern Church this is quite a grand affair. It has an architectural style that predates its true origin by a couple of centuries and there are wonderful stained glass windows and lots of fancy gold decorations on both the inside and the outside of the Church. Advantages: Fun filled, unpredictable and a great watch!!

Advantages: brilliant crime story you won't want to put down
Disadvantages: If you haven't read the previous books you may lack some background

...nine years before, and although he is involved with a new woman he still hasn't had closure from his wife disappearance and so when the body is found and seems to be around Sandy's age and hair colouring it reopens old wounds. As I have read the other books I know more about his wife's disappearance and the start of his new relationship but this book doesn't really focus to much on Grace's personal life it is more about the policing and although this made for a great story if you hadn't read the other books you may feel a bit like you're missing something. It is set in Brighton which I really like as I enjoy going there for weekends and so can picture some of the scenery as it's described but this story is also told in New York and Australia. Incorruptible Ice (Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow - Peter Hoeg)

Advantages: fascianting, beautiful, fun
Disadvantages: the techno-thriller resolution and action sequences might disappoint some readers

...as a psychological analysis or even (OK, at a push) as a philosophical parable. The version I read was translated by Felicity David. There is also another version, in Tiina Nunnally's translation, titled "Smilla's Sense of Snow". I would throughly recommend the version I read as it reads wonderfully. I have a strong belief that in great majority of cases the translator should be the native speaker of the language he/she is translating into, and it seems that Ms David is more likely to be a native speaker; plus her title sounds much better! 416 pages paperback...
