Petra Palace Hotel. Forget it!!!

Advantages: The only positive thing is it's closeness to Petra itself
Disadvantages: Dirty, dusty,noisy.

...of the day. Meals were taken in a restaurant which was upstairs, with no lift access. We had to come down to reception and then climb this staircase. Not good, if you are disabled. The choice of food was minimal and not particularly well presented. We didn't try the bar ourselves, but some in our party did, and said that the beer worked out at around £9 a pint. The only thing going for this hotel is that it is within walking distance of the city of Petra and it stands on a main road where there are shops that you can purchase eats, drinks, etc. We were only there for 2 nights (thank goodness) and certainly wouldn't recommend it to anybody. Perhaps when they have finished the refurbishment ( Goodness knows when that will be. They work SO slowly) it might improve the place, but in my opinion there are plenty of other places to stay...

Review of Petra (Jordan)

Great Location - bad timing

Advantages: Prime location, excellent access to sites, lovely roof terrace
Disadvantages: bit expensive when you add the 26% tax onto everything, renovations, lack of secure parking

...This hotel has got to be the hotel of choice in Petra, literally within 2 minutes walk is the entrance to the Petra ruins site. You couldn't ask for a better location when you are in Petra, especially as you are going to be doing a lot of walking! The location is what saved the hotel for us really. We arrived in Jordan in July, which is off season for them as it is too hot. However, for us coming from Dubai, the 35 degree heat and low humidity was a real pleasure. For people not coming from the Middle East though it can be warm and as such qualifies as their off season. This explains why, when we arrived we were then advised of the renovations going on and that one of the main restaurants would also be out of order. We were advised that the renovation noise would only be between 9-5pm! So we figured this would be ok as we would be out...

Rock city at the end of the ravine

Advantages: Hours of exploration if you like archaeology and some spectacular rock formations
Disadvantages: A lot of walking

It's the service that counts

Advantages: clean, not too big, affordable
Disadvantages: prices given exclude tax, so you have to bear that in mind

...My husband and I stayed in the Marriott hotel in Petra for one night in March 2005. It's situated up the hill but as long as you hire a taxi to get you there it's not a problem, moreover, you get nice views. The hotel is quite small but has most things a guest would expect in a five-star hotel. They have two restaurants, a bar, sauna, steam-room, outdoor pool. Our check-in was easy, they found our booking and gave us the keys. I have to point out that the reception staff were extremely helpful and friendly throughout our entire stay. The room wasn't overlooking anything spectacular - it was facing a road. The good thing was we didn't hear any traffic noise. Our room was quite well furnished - two double beds, a bedside table, dressing table, TV, two arm-chairs, wardrobes. The bathroom was clean too, with usual toiletries...

Belgium Waffles, From Blackpool To Basingstoke

Advantages: Easy to use and neat to store
Disadvantages: Initially takes some trial and error to perfec the process

...My sister is great at secretly noting down things I've said, and retrieving them months or years in the future when the time is right. When I was a pre-teen I was obsessed with the idea of being a 'grown up' and all the things it would mean, most notably in this case the fact that I would be able to have my very own kitchen with my very own waffle maker. Fast forward a decade to my 21st birthday and said sister presented me with exactly that: a Petra WA (WaffelAutomat) 12 waffle maker. Waffles are a lot like another of my favourite foods: crepes. The recipe is almost the same too, but the key difference for budding chefs is that in order to make waffles you do need specific equipment in the form of a waffle maker. There are literally hundreds of different types of these, but I've only ever tried mine, and it suits me nicely...

A tranquil retreat

Advantages: Close enough to nightlife to get there easily, but far enough away to be peaceful
Disadvantages: air con didn't work upstairs

...When my boyfriend and I started searching for a holiday earlier this year, I knew just what I wanted: a simple apartment in a small complex in a quiet location, but still close enough to shops and restaurants. I think I chose well! We booked for the last week in June (2007). It was a Thomson package deal, booked though www.thefirstresort.com. We were able to book online with a deposit and the phone to pay the outstanding amount at a later date. The apartments are situated in the village of Koutouloufari, which is 30mins by coach transfer from Heraklion airport. Koutouloufari is a hillside village, with the livelier Hersonissos being a 20 minute walk down the hill. This is also where you will find sandy beaches, watersports, lots of shops, and nightlife. The City of the Rocks

Advantages: A very good Tourist Attraction
Disadvantages: Some horse excreta along promenade but nothing serious

...I went to Jordan for a holiday and I found that it was very friendly, nice, and interesting. I went all over Jordan and my Dad took part in the Jordan super marathon. I have to admit that the best place that we wnert to along with Aqaba has got to be Petra. Petra means ROCK and this is literaly what it is. It is a city carved out of the rock. As you walk down this sort of promenade with cliffs towering over you it is nice and cool and is a good break from the heat of the day. As you walk out of the promenade you come to the Treasury. This feature took my breath away and I am sure it has done the same thing to everyone else that has gone to Petra. The Treasury is a large building that is carved out of the cliff side. Brilliant music by an AWESOME band

Advantages: good introduction to Christian Rock, one of the best albums Petra has ever done

...Out of all the Christian Rock bands I've listened to, and the albums I've had over the years, this CD by Petra remains one of my favourites. I just bought the CD as I can't find my tape with this album on. They were first brought to my attention in 1989/1990, by a friend of mine when we lived in Germany while my husband was stationed there with the Air Force. Moving to Florida in 1990, that summer Disney hosted it's annual "Night of Joy" which is a Christian music festival. Petra were taking part that year, so we went along. Disney World was packed - worse than any Summer's day in peak tourist season. It was awesome to se how many people turned up to this - reminded me of the halcyon days of Reading Rock and Castle Donington (showing my age now, folks, eh?).
